faith, blind faith
It’s because he was on that video tape.
I really just wanna say how much I love watching Haitani’s Makoto and Momochi’s Cody. Sucks he joined the Yun murder squad but wow, he makes Cody look top tier.
Oh and he’s got ChocoBlanka as well
Sometimes, you have to believe. Almost everyone from that era has talked about how insane Tomo’s reaction time was and how incredible his Guile/Ryu were.
Tomo couldn’t adapt to Super Turbo and immediately quit fighting games afterwards. He’s a coward and should not be considered for GFGOAT
I’m guessing because a lot of credible people have come out and said that he was the best from a lost era. People believe that many from the golden age are the best players. Since most golden age players like Kuni have dominated most players of this era. Also it doesn’t hurt that people like Schaefer come out of retirement and bodies Daigo in a game he admittedly hadn’t played in years at that point. And Daigo was in his prime at this time. so when guys like that come out and say, “if you think we’re good, then this guy Tomo was way better than any of us”, people start to pay attention. Honestly, there is just a lot of mystery surrounding how good he was, and the people still around who played against him all have positive things to say about him.
The same reason people are naming Eddie Lee as greatest of all time, in this thread. It sounds cool, and makes it seem like you have old school cred.
Anyone saying Tomo, that isn’t pushing 40, doesn’t count.
Eddie Lee being GOAT is a joke, honestly. That’s no disrespect to Eddie, at all. When I first started playing, he was my very first goal. I literally never won a match against him, so I’m not trying to shit on him at all… just anything Eddie did in SF, Justin did it 3 times over by now. Justin passed Eddie Lee up as Chinatown God, and East Coast King by like 2004, in all honesty. Eddie Lee is Top 5 all time East Coast (if you REALLY wanna ride his dick, you can make a case for #2 on EC… not a GREAT case… but a case, nonetheless)… any more praise than that is just people talking out of their ass though.
As for GOAT overall… fanboyism, and anti-fanboyism aside… I think Daigo has to be a TOP choice.
I like Nuki too. I think the only problem with bringing up Nuki is that, outside of ST and 3S, he didn’t dedicate himself to games for super long periods of time. Like, he won the first CvS2 National Championship in Japan, but he didn’t remain a threat in that game, as it evolved. He was top in Vanilla SF4 for the first 10 months or so, then he quit. Compare that to somebody like BAS, who is always good, but didn’t start dominating A3 or CvS2 until the games really started to take their ground, but once the game developed into what they were for the bulk of their competitive span, he settled in right with it, and just didn’t lose. Personally, as a player, I think it’s more impressive to dominate play, once people really know what they’re doing, as opposed to just jumping out of the gate early. Though… being able to excel just off of SF basics, reads, and feel is pretty damn impressive, in its own right.
As for other choices, I think if you’re gonna mention somebody like Tokido, then you have to bring in a few more names, like Mago (CvS2, SF4, CFJ, and probably some other bullshit), and BAS (SFA3, CvS2, GG).
Then again, the more I think about Bas, the more I think his name is very deserving of at Top 5 All Time status. He doesn’t have the versatility of some of the other players, but he just fucking DOMINATED a couple of games, the way nobody can say they dominated any game ever, outside of Justin in Marvel. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I can’t think of any other players that literally went years without losing a single tournament they entered, in their particular games. I didn’t follow every game, ever, intently, but I can only think of Wong and Bas.
I guess Bas doesn’t have the sheer amount of games that other players can claim, but when it came to the super technical 2D fighters, Bas is #1.
I can’t consider Justin in a #1 All-time conversation. He was clearly the best in the world in MvC2, but outside of that, he never won a major competition with Japanese competition, in any other game. Maybe if he can make a run in MvC3, like he did with MvC2, you can make a case, when you consider the 3S career, the CvS2 excellence, and even the ST moments.
Idk… there are a few players you have to consider… and I really don’t know shit about any 3D fighters, so idk…
this thread ended a long time ago…
Pele is the best nuff said.
Sent from Hueco Mundo using Garganta Talk.
Even though my pick is Tokido the lack of Justin Wong support in this thread is surprising. Eddie Lee and Tomo over Justin Wong? Get the fuck outta here.
Because no one likes him and wants him to go far far away.
Wong usually gets bodied when he’s goes anywhere that’s not here. Yeah he’s got MvC2 and is a Top 10 but the greatest, get the fuck outta here. Instead of just trying to figure out who’s the best at everything it’d be best to once again look at who’s the top 5 in specific games
Like Marvel
- Justin
- Yipes
- Sanford
- CLock
5 Duc
CvS2
- Bas
- Iyo
- Choi
- Buk
- Chari
I would put Choi and Buk ahead of Chari. Choi was probably the best American CvS2 player there was when the game was being played and Buk was damn great as well. He showed how great Iori and N-Groove could be.
Yeah I was iffy on putting Chari at third, Choi and Buk are definityley up there.
I would put Buk #1 because I like Hibiki
*Not to get off topic but all this talk about CVS 2 in this thread has made me nostalgic and now I just ordered a copy of the game from Amazon. *
Just counting Japanese national tournaments, Daigo has won in 5 different games (ST, TS, CvS1, A3, VS) and was runner up in 3 more (CvS2, CFE, SF4). When you add in his international success, I don’t think you can think of a single player that can come close to his track record (and he’s done it over a span of something like 14 or 15 years). Closest I would say is Nuki.
If you want knocks against him, he has not dominated a game throughout it’s entire metagame evolution, is only exceptional at Capcom fighters, and is not the strongest in terms of execution (one of the reasons he dropped GG so early).
Problem with including 3D games is that VERY few players are exceptional at both 2D and 3D. Valle, Ryan Hart, and Tokido are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head who I would consider as contenders (and not necessary the strongest) if you wanted to look at all fighting games.
Mike Ross…
Daigo is the best fighting game player of all time hands down, and I say that as a someone who thinks Daigo fanboys are scum.
That being said, if you ever get to play him in tournament, play him like anyone else and dont be scared of his name. We’ve all seen he can be beat.
Wow… just… wow.
Were you around for MvC2/CvS2? I love Clock just as much as the next guy, but there’s no way he was Top 5 in MvC2. No fucking way. And how do you have a Marvel Top 5, with zero Seattle representation? I don’t know who I’d put as Top 5, but I can think of 10-20 players I’d put above Clock. Duc won Evo, so I guess he deserves a Top 5 mention, but I don’t really think he was Top 5. I’d take Row, JMar, Chris Schmidt, Chunk, Potter, Bill… maybe even Desmond before I’d put Clock up there. Even Neo, you gotta put him up above Clock, at this point. This is just a small list, btw. There are plenty of other players that performed better. Clock gets love for inventing a team, mastering it, and still doing well even when everyone else abandoned it. But “love” isn’t top 5.
Your CvS2 list is all sorts of jokes honestly. Outside of Bas, it’s just completely wrong.
Iyo was sick, but definitely not Top 5. 2? Not a chance. Choi… again… sick, but not top 5. Buk… sick, super smart, innovative… all that. Top 5? In US, sure… in the world? No. And Chari? Chari?? Chari??? Did that nigga even win A-Cho once?
I don’t know if I can make a top 5 list, but again, like Clock in MvC2, I can name at least 20 or so players above Chari. Uma (who’s #1 right now, and probably for the past 3-4 years… though I still don’t think that moves him past Bas, overall), YSK, KOK, Yane, Pinokio, OTK, Kitsune, Justin, Choi, Buk, Combofiend, Ricky, Kindevu, Tokido, Iyo… I like Steve H over Chari kinda free too, honestly. Umm… let me continue… Tsugunosuke, Gene Wong, Dan, Ino, Mizoteru, Nakanishi, I mean… I could go on, and on, and on. Chari was good. No question… but Top 5. Jokes.
Man I fucking miss watching OTK and Pino play.
le sigh~
