Taskmaster: His damage is ridiculous and if you can do a whole mighty swing bnb it pays for itself and can nearly body the whole cast.
Wesker: Same as above. His hypers are irrelevant outside of his level 3 unless you are doing the DHC trick and then you are probably going to body whoever you are playing.
Ammy: She doesn’t need hypers, when she does she pays for herself and her cold star is a meter machine.
Dante: Pays for himself and earns some in the progress. High execution required.
Wolverine: You will find quickly if you dedicate your Wolvie game to resets and OTGs instead of hypers that his damage output still statisfies.
EDIT:
I wanted to add Chris Red. He zones and controls screen pretty well against mid - low level mobility characters. His zoning chips well and builds decent meter. His combos hit hefty, can be extended by the right assist, and don’t really rely on Hyper Combos at all. Someone else to consider is Tron. You aren’t usually going to use her for this purpose but her combos are long, multi-hitting, and if you avoid doing touch of deaths you aren’t going to need very many hypers. Also, she can take as many attacks as she dishes out with her high HP.
I’ll go with Wolverine and Zero. I always manage to build tons of meter with them with simple combo’s without even knowing it. I’m sure there are other characters that build just as much, but I don’t have as much experience with them so I can’t say much.
Taskmaster possesses a “meterless” combo that outputs 700k ? I’m assuming this is a mere typo ? If not, where the hell have I been hiding for over two months ?
According to the original title of the thread, the former. According to the current state of the thread, neither.
Nobody ever talks about the awesome battery that is Shuma. He’s got good meterless loops, high priority high attacks and long range low attacks to get in, and mystic ray to bring down flyers and zoners.
Be honest battery typically means 1st character and most people simply pick a strong character who isn’t meter dependent. So really any character that has a BNB that deals 400k+ without meter fits into this category. But top 3 imo are.
Magneto - Honestly he doesn’t need meter for his combo’s and if he does he earned more than he uses in ALL combo’s if your doing them right. HIGH dmg non-meter combo’s with easy reset potential also. + disruptor spam.
Wolverine - He is just amazing at being on offense so that people will have to block a lot. Between his divekick and j.C/throw OS you can force people to block a lot of your options. Once he gets one meter he gets cross up Berserker Slash into large damage. Very strong first choice.
Ammy - Ammy is just amazing … period. While not as strong on meter building as magneto and wolverine she’s so good at controlling the screen, meter isn’t necessary. If she uses 1 meter she also pays for it most of the time. Not an excellent battery per se, but definately above average at it and one of the strongest point characters (if not THE strongest) you can choose.
use ammy or morrigan as your 2nd character and spam meter build assist. if you land a few meter build assists you can like, not touch your opponent once and still get dark pheonix.
I don’t consider Tron a good battery. She sucks at actually getting the hit that starts her combos that build 2+ meters, and you usually want to play her in the 2nd or 3rd slot to get the most out of her assist. On a Phoenix team, that means she’ll have no projectile support.
Spencer is also not a good battery. His full combo typically builds about 1 meter, and he needs the threat of Bionic Lancer (BIONIC ARRRMMM) to keep opponents from using 100% of their tools/assists. It’s also recommended that you have a safe DHC after him to make them safer, like when you hit the assist call but the main is blocking. It’s a big part of his game - just the threat of it, even.
When I think battery, I think Mags/Wesker/Dante. Ammy and Task work also but just because they’re great characters. I’d rather use meter with them personally.
Others (like Chun and Chris for instance) build meter well but they aren’t as good of characters as the top tier. Others you’d rather have in the 2nd or 3rd slot anyway (like Doom).
Spencer can do 800k meterless and his combos build well over a bar. Dunno what else you want really. Even still, he can spare a meter or 2 for the threat of a Bionic Arm punish even if the team has Phoenix on it.
I haven’t really seen any Phoenix teams in tournament games blow meter before hitting 5 and tagging her in. I know it’s a possibility for some teams in some steamroll situations, but it’s not something you should plan around I think.
Also I know Spencer is capable of big damage but the most I’ve seen without x-factor or heavy assist usage is around 600k, and that’s in the corner with a choice opener to the combo. On a Phoenix team, you may already be using your assist to get in to begin with, so that only leaves you with 1 assist during the combo, Phoenix herself. 600k with choice conditions is comparable to Mags, Dante and Wesker, but I feel like those characters have better rushdown and better matchups overall.
I wanna nominate Tron as an excellent battery.
Since I cant seem to combo into any of her hypers, I tend to get 5 bars very fast due to all the loops and relaunches
