It’s easy to “suck it up” when whatever it is that you’re sucking up has never had any real consequence to your life. As terrible as it sounds, that’s often how it works out with feminists. Society has been made into such a way now, that if you attempt to call out the double standard, and the sexism of the majority feminist mindset itself, that you’re only doing that “because you hate women”. You can hate the majority of the Feminist without hating women or equal rights for them, in the same way hating Chauvinism doesn’t mean you think men should have less rights than women or that you have to hate men.
I “get” that in some places women don’t have equal rights, and are seen as almost “inferior”, but having people from countries where that isn’t the case being the ones to speak the most about it, lessens the effect. And really, in no way shape or form is making it an “us vs them” or “either you’re with us or you’re against us” mindset going to make people feel more inclined to sympathize with you, as chances are more likely they’ll roll their eyes and say “Oh for fuck’s sake, not this shit again”.
Am I correct in thinking that there is a broad sentiment in this thread that people from outside the hardcore gaming realm have no real right to criticize it? Because that’s absurd. Cultural criticism isn’t limited to criticizing cultural venues that one is a part of. If that were the case, there would be no right for anyone to have an opinion on anything they have no immediate relation to. It’s like telling someone their opinion on the sanitation system is invalid because they aren’t sanitation workers. Cultural media affects everyone in that it is the expression of society, fostering certain attitudes and altering the zeitgeist (the rise of a historically specific form of American nationalism within the onset of neoliberalism for example).
On the topic at hand, I’m all for calling out irrationality and blind hatred regardless of topic but I’m also all for addressing a reasonable woman or man’s concern over the objectification of women in cultural media overall. To say it’s nonexistent or that men don’t complain when they get objectified, is to completely miss the point of the topic which is not static or limited to a particular woman’s experience but encompasses an entire history of subjugation and socially and culturally instituted hierarchies. Throughout all the man rage, the rational points of some particular aspects or branches of ‘feminist’ criticism gets obfuscated and written off in the fuss.

That article is why these ‘feminists’ should simply leave the game industry alone as they simply understand jack shit and have the biggest victim complex ever!
It’s a combination of:
- People equating “story-driven experiences” with gaming (instead of, you know, actual gaming).
- Women, unfortunately, being under-represented in the protagonist department fictionwide.
The former is a problem many, many people have, male and female.
The latter is more a societal problem for reasons I’d need many essays to cover.
The issue that most seem to be skirting is it’s not a matter of criticizing or not, which ever stance you chose to take is no matter to me.
But the sudden entitled demands made with no plausible or noteworthy examples other then artistic direction and the blanketed “Objectified” term being thrown.
My main issues with these arguments aside from the absurdity is that like many push’s that attempt to climb on the equal rights crucifix they are not seeking true balanced rights but rather a reversal of the perceived dicadomy.
