She’d destroy me! Fortunately she’s not in my weight class. Weight class is a different example of discrimination, if one would put it that way. But I doubt people would say completely do away with weight classes for professional fighters. Weight sure does matter, but at least they allow the smaller/lighter people to compete upwards in weight classes. The same cannot be said for women. If a woman wants to compete with men, why don’t we let them try? Some sports allow it, some sports don’t (at the higher levels of competition and in NCAA)

The truth is, we don’t have wide spread evidence to support the separation of men and women in sports. What we already have is, men and women generally compete in separate categories. So we only have wide spread evidence to say if they compete separately, here are the differences. For instance, in Tennis, among top players, men generally serve at a higher velocity than women (See quote below for why). We don’t have evidence to say that if women joined men’s Tennis, that they’d never compete with the top players. Perhaps in the first generation they’d rarely win, and people would say so men and women should be separated. I’d argue that we’d have to wait until a whole generation grows up competing against each other, then who knows how it will end. These are top athletes and they are already the outliers, so there could be an woman who destroys all competition, regardless of sex.

Actually, I rarely post in political discussions, but I wanted to let you know that there have been an experiment, PR one but still, in the NHL. During a pre-season game, the Tampa Bay Lightnings was allowed to use a female goaltender called Manon Rhéaume. This was a PR-trick when the Florida franchise was just starting up. She did fairly well, even if it was not a true NHL-game, she signed for a try out and played a few games and didn’t look that bad.

Does this mean that women, with the right training, can play with men? I don’t know. I think it’s the approach to the sport that matters - women aren’t supposed to “do everything to win”, like men are IMO.

This is cool I had no idea.

So I looked into this and it seems she only let 2 goals in which wasn’t to bad. However since it was a PR stunt with the intention of hosting women’s hockey, it’s possible this exhibition match might have been skewed in a way to let her do better then she normally would have. I know that in high school co-ed exhibitions, usually the coach on the male team will tell the guys beforehand to hold back and not go too hard.

Not saying that’s what happened here, but unfortunately when it comes to intergender matches like this we have to ask questions given the politics of the situation. I remember a few years ago the female Olympic hockey team played against a high school boys team and checking was banned…and even though the women lost the news articles made it seem like they did a lot better then they actually did.

Unfortunately the sports women can compete against men are few and far inbetween. There was a intergender match decades ago by the then best female fighter in the world agaisnt a male fighter. He was good but by far not even close to the best male fighter in the world and she got KOed bad in the 2nd round. The match itself looked questionable the first round as he seemed a lot less restrained the 2nd round which is when he got the KO punch. I suspect women will only be able to compete agaisnt men in non direct athletic competition but who knows.

Women are far physically inferior to men, and this can be seen in any individual or team sport. Men are 1.5x stronger pound for pound, faster, and bigger on average. Sure these elite woman athletes could beat the average joe, but competing against elite male athletes it would be a joke.

I don’t really watch female sports cause…well same reason I don’t really watch college or high school sports, I like to see the very top athletes in a sport competing. That means male professional sports. There are a few exceptions, due to women having greater flexibility watching something like Womens gymnastics or Womens figure skating is preferrable to the male equivalents.

As far as general popularity of female sports, any wonder why Beach volleyball (women in skimpy bikinis) or Women’s tennis (those hot russian tennis players) is popular? Yeah…sex appeal.
