I’ve read a lot of feminist literature on the concept of male privilege and nothing in my interpretation is wrong…its very specific in its definition and how it implies. You might not personally believe this is the way it"should"be defined but it doesnt stop gender bigots like anita from using it that way.
These so called implicit rights also carried with them very onerous responsibilities,…everything from the right to vote and owning property had some attached obligation…so all of these"rights"men had were not just free cookies men got for simply being men but rather rights they earned in exchange for services and responsibilities that would often times come at great personal cost to them. Interestingly enough these same obligations and responsibilities vanished the second they were made accessibly universal to women…funny how that works. Although if there was a argument to be made about any 1 group of people having implicit privileges especially in our modern context…I don’t think it would be men lol. Moreover the examples you used are completely anecdotal and even if they were truth…do any of these perceptions afford some negative legal consequences. You say these implicit social rights give men a advantage in our day to day functions but I have yet to see any visible evidence of this…on the contrary though I can cite plenty of examples of this happening with the implicit social rights of women. Women have the right to be presumed as the more fit parent (custody is awarded to women near exclusively), the right to be presumed as the battered partner (primary aggressor policy and the deluth model of domestic violence makes it so that officers are required to arrest the partner who is larger and heavier during domestic disturbances even if that partner is innocent and was only defending themselves), the right to not be presumed a potential rapist (new rape prevention campaigns on university campuses have begun to use the slogan “only men can stop rape"or “teaching our men and boys not to rape”), the right to not be presumed as a sexual predator (certain airlines will not allow a child to sit next to a single man…pretty much speaks for itself), the right to have your accusations taken at face value (title 9 and the dear colleague directive from the obama administration…technically its a gender neutral policy but the intention and application of it is pretty clear) and I could go on and on. As for the right not to be harassed on the damn street…ummm considering that men comprise the majority of assault victims or just victims of violence period, I would say that it’s a right men don’t have over women. I can concede in saying that women are more likely to experience cat calls and stares but I would think a savage beating is less pleasant then some dude yelling out"nice tits”…that’s just me though.
Your exactly right…it’s perfectly reasonable to gauge the collective privilege of men as a group by only examining the top 1% of them who just happen to at the top. The remaining 99% dont matter even if a rather sizable % of them also happen to be at the bottom…funny thing is that a few days ago I watched a video from a feminist making this exact same point. She said something like…“even if there are men out there who have had troubled lives and who are suffering, it doesnt change the fact that the system they live in was still built for them to succeed”. In other words even though the homeless population is overwhelming male and bottom scraps of society also happen to be male (prison population, substance abusers,suicide victims) it doesnt matter so long as a tiny fragment of people at the top happen to share the same chromosome as them. How many cases of virtual harassment have actually poured into real life especially in the gaming community. Maybe Im outta the loop here but where is the epidemic of real life rape and violence against women happening in the gaming world…like if its not restricted to just the online world for them then I imagine we would have some legal documentation to all these terrible crimes being perpetrated. Also why would men be immune to online violence playing out in real life…they are the largest demographic for being victims of real world violence so statistically speaking it would be more accurate to presume women would actually be quite safe from online harassment.

This is precisely the point I made earlier about the dangers in ascribing the status of a group by only examining it’s most successful members while ignoring the flip side of the same coin. It’s like saying the lottery is a perfectly stable and effective path towards wealth all because a tiny % of people score the jackpot…if your gonna judge the curve off only the people who win the jackpot and ignore the people who lose…then your gonna get a very skewed and dishonest perspective. Well first off in respects to the history of systemic advantages and disadvantages…the population in general had a hard time throughout history. Different expectations and obligations were expected from different people especially as it relates to gender…so to have a social mechanism in the form of government legislation to address all of this and correct it…will as you said its not always gonna work or even be that effective. However before we talk about results and what will and not work we gotta make sure the issues we are trying to correct and address are actually valid and worth addressing. In respects to men and women though, this becomes very difficult because of a historical narrative that’s under constant revision. I would like to go into explicit detail over the points of contention and refutation in regards to what systemic advantages and disadvantages are valid and invalid but I’d be here for the whole afternoon so maybe when I feel less lazy I’ll come back to this point assuming its still a relevant argument in this thread.

Well interestingly enough there are virtually no men’s shelters either even though men are just as likely to be victims of domestic abuse as women. Women have the monopoly when it comes to being victims and any other group be damned…even when some of these groups are actually more affected by violence then women. While I would love to see more teenage shelters and men shelters though I think the current social climate won’t allow for it…I mean when you have groups like NOW and VAWA calling father rights group"hate groups"all because they want to discuss issues like the ones were talking about right now, it makes it hard to distribute any sympathy and more importantly funding to different causes. Although the funny thing about women feeling uncomfortable with teenage boys being around is that when the first women’s shelter was opened in the states, the woman in charge of it (erin prizzy I think) found that the large majority of women seeking shelter were as if not more violent then the men they were leaving. Therefore I question just how truthful the claim about women being fearful is…especially when you consider these teenage boys are still under age and just children themselves. Although if there is some dishonesty going on it wouldnt be the first time. That woman who opened the first women’s shelter tried to go public with the information she found but the feminist groups of that day threatened her and went even as far as killing her dog…she had to move to the UK under police protection and only recently started talking again. To this day though the status quo of abuse shelters still goes unchallenged though…probably easy to understand why lol.
I’ve been around awhile and from what I see, the main issue isn’t that nerds feel this community has to have exclusive access but rather they feel insulted that people like anita want to come in and completely dictate how we should feel, how we should act, how we should think and what we should enjoy. Well in gaming its quite interesting because the mainstream appeal of gaming and the rise of girl gamers coincided at roughly the same time. While there have been women in gaming before it didn’t become a"thing"until around the time gaming hit the mainstream so I guess its like the chicken and the egg. What I do know though is that this mess about abuse and online harassment didnt become a important topic until women were used as the primary examples…anita built her entire campaign off this and women continue to be used as the leading example behind the issue of online harassment and abuse in the gaming world. While I would think the larger social acceptance of gaming might have had a small hand in this as well…its clear the trigger for all of this was the concern for women.
The thing is that these videos and a few others posted here, argue the points and arguments you and other people have made here in defense of anita and feminism. It saves us the time having to write out these long winded responses when the material is already floating around a much more accessible format. In fact your response to me was covered in both those videos but unfortunately I still had to type them out…either way while I agree youtube videos dont normally make convincing arguments, there are some exceptions especially when it comes to anti-feminist videos and the videos I chose to directly address you and the other feminist apologetics on this thread.
