That’s stupid, the entire statement is wholly and completely stupid. A combo counter doesn’t define a genre, and the combos are kept but not displayed anyways, and you can have a combo counter int raining mode if you want it anyways.
I can see your point of view, and I’d like to appreciate not flaming smash(ers) while making your arguments. Now, we agree that the main goal of smash is to take a stock by having your opponent cross a blast-line, and the goal of many other fighting games is to reduce the health bar to 0. Now what is the main way of achieving these goals? Fighting. For both these games the only truly viable way to achieving victory is to fight. Yeah you can prevent someone from grabbing the edge by grabbing it yourself and having your opponent plummet to his death, but how did he get off the stage to begin with? Somebody had to knock him out there in the first place. The only truly viable way to win at smash is to fight. You can argue that an opponent can suicide but then the point is no longer to win and the argument becomes invalid. And again, if you send someone so far offstage he can’t return, the only way to do so is by fighting.
Both games have the same main course of achieving their goals which is obviously to fight, the only difference is that while most fighting games have dropping a health bar to 0, smash has it’s goal as knocking your opponent through a blast line.
(again, thanks for your civility)
I am a Smasher(Melee) and even I agree that melee is not a fighting game.
It’s competitive and it requires a fuckton of techskill, but it’s still not a true fighting game.
A friend of mine called it a “Competitive Multiplayer Platform Game” and I can actually agree with this.
Smash has no health bars, it has no KO, it is not a fighting game.
That being said I find it sad that some SRKers think that Smash(Again, Melee) is EASY. Wich it’s NOT true at ALL.
Some of the things you need to do in Smash to be competitive is just insane, SHFFLing makes SRK FADC U1 from Ryu look like a fucking joke. C.Falcon Moonwalking is hard to do and Drillshines with Fox are nothing to scoff at.
At the end of the day I still don’t get why people want SRK to accept them?
Go play Smash, enter tournies, and have fun. Who gives a damn what people here think of you? I certainly don’t.
!. The entire community does not matter except for those who place, in that case the entire community might as well not exist.
If you place top 8 at a major then you get an opinion on what a fighting game is.
Now you have to place top 8 in a SMASH game to say whether or not it is or isn’t a fighing game.
4 Now it has to be melee? Wtf?
I can easily say that unless you play some of the hardest fighting games and have a track record of beating top players on occasion then you can have an opinion? Do you play MvC2, GGXX, CvS2? If it is SF4 or Arcana you play then it doesn’t really matter becuase “in my opinion” they are not the hardest fighting games around. Do you see something wrong there? and then you contradict your first point with your second point.
The amount of hatred and barking in this thread is ridiculous.
I play SSFIV, MvC2, 3S, CVS2, MK9, BB, and SSBM on a regular basis. I love all of them. I never shove my dick into threads and talk about how one of them is greater than the other because its all up to the individual. Hell, my favorite fighting game isn’t even any of those. My most favorite fighting game is TMNT: Tournament Fighters for SNES. But wait, that is a game that hardly anyone plays, yet alone knows about. I guess I have to go on some elitist rant about how its better than modern fighters in every aspect although it was released 15+ years ago. Oh, and I have to post something about post-2009 SRK members like something so minuscule as that can complete nullify anything they say.
anyway on your first 2 points, I think Smash, PS, dissidia, etc. should be classified as a subgenre of fighter, kind of like how there are FPPs(First Person Puzzleers, aka Portal) and similar subgenres in other games.
by y’all’s logic. hold 'em doesn’t use jokers, but a complete deck of cards would include… so is hold 'em therefore not…
no, that’s silly. a deck of cards can be used for a manner of party games or to determine who’s going to walk away from the table with millions.
is one better suited for a casual atmosphere because of the random factors that minimize the role of individual skill and thus undermine the nature of winning? sure. does one intrinsically better reward empirical attributes like cunning and knowledge of odds and is therefore better supported by (and maybe inevitably fosters) a competitive environment? sure. see where i’m going with this?
how accepting both in coexistence is difficult is beyond me and insisting on either side of the fence as more valid is sort of in and of itself an ignorant perspective to hold. they both have their time and place, like anything else.
my definition of a fighting game: i beat you up while you beat me up. through some objective measure the game declares one of us the winner. how smash fares as a fighting game is another matter altogether.
srk generally doesn’t like smash because the Brawl community was very scrubby at evo 2k8 and in general about items and then random outspoken minorities like this thread try to appeal to SRK but do it badly. I don’t see the point in trying. smash is a legit game but the community is really bad at controlling damage on other sites.
also other members of the community seem hell-bent on convincing SRKers that melee is a “real fighting game” and SRKers can easily just troll them into making themselves look even worse, it’s kind of disheartening as a melee player.
I think it’s not even the fact that people claim it’s not a fighting game that gets to some smashers. It’s when some SRKers who are either trolling, bandwagoning, or truly don’t know anything try to diminish skill in smash (just Melee actually) and they refuse to make logical arguments. When you put time and effort into something to get substantial results and someone walks in and says you and your friends suck and all you did takes no skill, it doesn’t surprise me one bit that there have been flame wars that escalate to no end in these forums.
Is that seriously how you debate on the internet? Constantly dropping f-bombs and questioning a… question?
Don’t make a claim like that without having evidence to support it or risk looking stupid. Unless you do have evidence, and simply didn’t give it for whatever reason, looking stupid while having evidence (??)
Oh wow thanks for that informative post. Yes. We’re fucking serious. The only thing i’ve found about Justin Wong is this http://allisbrawl.com/ttournament.aspx?id=131 . And it’s not a 100+ tournament he’s not in 2nd place in Singles, or Doubles.
How about you actually post the source of your claims? Since you took the time to post something that tells nothing at all, it figures you could actually take the time to support your BS.
Source: my damn self, BECAUSE I WAS FUCKING THERE.
This isn’t fucking grad school. I don’t need a fucking source for something I witnessed IN FUCKING PERSON because I don’t give a shit if some random smashtards believe me or not, but don’t go around thinking you’re entitled to fucking sources on the interwebz.
