What's the beef with MK?

Hell yea MKA for EVO…LOL!

But anyways yea u ban boss charcaters that’s a given. But again, air combos are not that great and can be broken (stopped). Oh yea and also ban Sareena’s knife/throw glitch (and if other characters ban it from them as well).

In MKA I believe that this game is all about defense and using safe moves (just like any high level fighting game to be played). I mean people are so concerned about “OMFG, not the nasty air infinites!!!”. Hey guess what, DON’T PUT YOURSELF IN THAT POSITION.

There are a lot of characters in MKA that are of Range type. Turtle, be patient, and use distant poke to stay out of harms way.

I mean I’ve seen and been in great matches where u would only use your breaker like once per round. And again no air infinites, they are really not that easy (well at least to me) to get in a “real match”!

And damn do people forget that u can parry in this game…OMFG 3S…I’m just kidding. Even though it would be kinda cool to see in the next MK that u can link normals into special moves…LOL!

And for christ sake Boon, put in more high/low mix up dial combos!

I wouldn’t play MK:A unless I knew beyond any reasonable doubt I could kick people’s asses with Ashrah.
Only reason I bought Armageddon was because I wanted to see Ashrah and Kitana in the same game so there would be some sort of skewed logic behind my fantasies.

MK games are meant to be mindless fun. There is some depth to be found but unfortunately it is cancelled out by the brokeness. The games are technically imperfect yet are still immensely popular because they appeal to many casual gamers who are drawn to the characters and style, rather than hardcore competitive gaming, and wouldn’t care or even know if the game was broken or not. They just have fun with what it is. And Boone and Midway know that.

Noob is probably the best turtle in the whole game, primarily because of 3 moves:
Darkness, Silent Assassin and D+4 (Monkey). Invisibility in any MK game is a good thing, especially in the 3-D games, simply because you can’t gauge at all what they’re doing (even his shadow vanishes). It’s easy for a noob to say “Well, look at the camera angles!” like I’ve seen in a game magazine once, but can you really guage what the person is doing? You can’t tell if Noob is ducking, standing or even giving you the finger once he goes invisible. I’ve caught a fair share of people who try to approach Noob thinking he’s standing, only for them to collect a D+4 up close. When they switch strategies, an overhead 4.

Silent Assassin is good to keep away, and it baits people to try to come closer, or at least, make them re-think their strategy. I use this practically in tandem with Darkness to keep my opponent guessing. Also, against Sareena, it’s a must to set up his Teleport Throw (just to get close to her) and to prevent her from scouting you with those knives. Keep your eye out for Dairou and Tombstone Drop, though.

As for D+4 (Monkey), it’s the safest poke in the game. Nuff said.

They’re not easy, to be honest, but there are a few (like me) who can actually take full advantage of somebody trapped in mid-air. Sometimes, (when I feel like a smart ass, that is), I even finish off the air infinite in style (Liu Kang can simply 1,1, pause, 1,1,3,4, CS and call it George from there.) Infinites has some serious potential to really screw up an otherwise perfect game at times.

As for Breakers…well, Breaker conservation was something I was never good at, so maybe there are some things I really need to polish up.

There are a few, but they SUCK.
Try Kenshi’s Branch Combo and you’ll see. Shit’s so unsafe to use, you might as well paint a bull’s eye on your ass when you use it.

High/Low mix up games have never been this game’s strong point. The only high/low mix up I’ve seen much of in any one style in that game is Sonya’s Tae Kwon Do style, which is chock full of them, which is one of the reasons why she was one of the easier characters to use in MK:DA.

True, but I wish Midway would begin taking the game seriously for once.
The MK series had potential with the DA engine, but royally fumbled it in Deception and Armageddon. I’m hoping that MK8 really shows what they should have learned a good while ago.

"Kabal

Kabal is far and beyond the #1 character in UMK3, and for that reason, I will get into a bit of counter Kabal strategies as well. He defines the top tier. There are many specific tactics that need to be used against him to stand a chance, and these tactics can be spilled over into general gameplay as well. He essentially dictates the match and really the only way to beat Kabal is to frustrate him and force mistakes. You really have to take advantage of jab canceling with block, in which you bait spins out of the Kabal player, and the result will either be a snuff, a block, or a throw."

??

I know hes top but hes not god tier, if he was the top players would have put him at god tier.

People should stop trying to argue that Kabal is god tier or broken or whatever. Its obvious you people don’t play UMK3 and have no fucking clue what you’re talking about.

Yea, but MK Special Forces was by far the worse. Just completely and utterly unplayable. Even the most hardcore fan will not even let special forces cross their lips >_<.

via wiki:
"Of all the MK games, Special Forces is considered to be the worst, though some believe Mortal Kombat Advance holds that dubious honor. This has much to do with the fact that many of Midway’s staff, including series co-creator John Tobias, had left the company in 2000 for various reasons while the game was still in production. MK:SF was rushed to completion following Tobias’s departure, and sold so terribly that Midway placed the series on hold in preparation for Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002).

This was the second Mortal Kombat game developed by Midway that was a platform rather than a fighting game, after having tested the waters with Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero in 1997. Tobias intended to work on a series of platform games to expand the Mortal Kombat universe, including titles centering around Baraka and Liu Kang; only the latter was actually released by Midway (2005’s Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks) despite having sat on the drawing board for many years.

There were plans for a Nintendo 64 version but after Tobias’s departure and the release of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox systems, Midway management decided on a budget release of the game priced at $20.00 for the PS1 only."

True Grave: I actually enjoyed mythologies even though I cheated on my first run through ><, some of the platforming, especially on Fujin’s stage was a complete and utter bitch. Quan Chi and Shinnok, the last 2 bosses were by far the easiet in gthe game ><

ya thats why I play UMK3 like everyday online. So I guess you know everything. He is top tier but hes not unbeatable

my beef with it is that everyone plays the same.

Hmmm…
http://tabmok99.mortalkombatonline.com/subzero_ice_creamer.html

No way.
MK Advance is far more unplayable.

in what way? http://www.ultimatemk.com/cguide.php?game=umk3arcade if you read this and watch tournament vids not everyone plays the same way.

I think what he’s talking about is that everyone has the same basic move set. All the characters have the same style with different special moves.

The basic moves are the same.
It’s the properties about them that are different.
In the earlier games like MK2, it was very apparent, but those differences seem to be more subtle in MK3 and 4.

yep.

No one can really deny the impact the MK series on the industry and in pop culture, but its seem like Boom just lost insight about what it takes to make a fighter after UMK3. IMO UMK3 is a fairly enjoyable tittle, well there is the Kabal BS but its still fun to play from time to time…wish they would make another 2D tittle.

You can throw those characters. You can throw those characters with Shao Kahn and other characters. I like MK over SF in the storyline but SF over MK in the game play.

Yup about people saying that this game is broken. Most people can say the same for MVC2 and other games…“YCK” comes to mind

EDIT: You don’t need to ban anyone. Allow everyone to play and the settings for MKA will be default, which means that stuff like death traps are turned on since it’s part of the game.

Who thinks MK8 will come out around the same time as SF4 to rekindle the beef from the early ninties…

I prefer MK2 to UMK3. There’s no easy combos where you just press several buttons in a row. Also, the atmosphere is much better. The music, stages, fatalities, story; everything was more serious and had more thought put into it. And it’s more of a thinking man’s game without the run button.

yes cause ground pound and HK, and jumping si’s all day is really fun

Marvel is broken but at least it requires skill to play and doesn’t need an extensive ban list.
