What's the beef with MK?

there is no ban list for

MK1
MK2
MK3
UMK3
MK4

other then that I dont know but none of those games have a ban list, so i have no idea wtf your talking about. MVC2 has like 4 top tiers compared to 10 top tiers of UMK3 so MVC2 is more broken. The skill from MK and MVC2 are a lot different, if you think MK games dont take skill then go watch some tournament vids on youtube.

Trying to play any fighting game high level takes skill. Your a fucking moron if you dont think so.

I was talking about MKA, sorry if I made you think otherwise.

UMK3 is tourney worthy, yeah, I never said it wasn’t. But MKA? I’m sorry, get that shit out of here.

never got into the 3D MK’s cause they seemed kind of slow and boring compared to 2-d. After hearing people complain about scorpion being a god in MK4, and the Ice chick as a god in MK5 I think; I went back to UMk3.

I don’t understand the guys who occassionally post their generalized thoughts about UMK3 in here who don’t actually play it.

Face off against a Moloch player who knows 1,1, U+3 and see if you can say that first sentence with a straight face. At least, in MvC2, you need to know what you’re doing, even with the more broken characters. Moloch does roughly between 30-33% damage with his THREE HIT combos, even without his extremely easy infinite. He also has a deadly mix-up game with trip and an overhead hitting UNBLOCKABLE Ball Slam. It takes virtually no real skill to play characters like Moloch and win.

I do agree with you on the point of Death Traps, though.
My opinion is "If you don’t like it, don’t fall for it in the first place."
With that said, Falling Cliffs for the win.

Whoever said Frost was a God Tier in Deadly Alliance doesn’t know how to block.
At best, only mid-high tier.
Scorpion, on the other hand, is extremely broken, all because of two moves: Pi Gua’s R1 (Shove) and Hellfire. Shove creates a very effective keepaway game, and it’s always a free setup for Hellfire. Rinse, repeat.

He’s quite right.
People tend to make the unfortunate assumption that just because MK has somewhat linear (is that the correct word?) gameplay, that it also means that it takes no skill to play.

Take UMK3, for example.
Excluding Kabal, who is a headache in his own right, most serious MK matches are all about ticking and capitalising on mistakes. Most novices would fall for quite a few things in that game, but only people who really thought about this game make full use of things such as run jabs, anti-throw blocking (yes, you can avoid being thrown by holding Down-Back and Block) and juggle setups. Not to mention which moves are actually safe to use in any given situation.

Speaking of which, if you ever run across that match video between Ermac and New Sub Zero, I suggest you give it a watch. Ermac makes one serious comeback from 1% life and only 5 seconds on the clock, while having to contend with a turtling Sub Zero with a full life bar. All because of the above. Anyway, watch it, because it made me laugh my ass off.

Believe you me, I’ve seen similar sentiments all over the place wherever this game is discussed.

Unfortunately, not very likely to happen.

Wow…reading through this thread its easy to see that with the exception of only 3, 4 maybe 5 people actually have a clue about what their talking about.

I am really, really tired of the way too common SF elitists out there who dont even play ANY MK’s talk down to MK as if they know what the fuck their talking about!!!

I love SF, but tell me this if SF is just SO perfect and great: 15+ years after the 2nd installment of the series, and there still making new versions of THE SAME GAME? I man, it was SO good, why so many versions to get it right? How many versions of SF3 did it take for Capcom to get right? This is exactly the reason and the attitude which makes this community so unbearble. (seriously, you have to be a member for 2-3 years to get any respect from anybody; you all like grumpy old men at a old nursing home) I love SF’s, all the VS’s series, etc, and I bet I could whip the shit out of more than half of the people here. But as far of your knowledge of MK, its a joke. Just stop commenting on stuff you know NOTHING about.

UMK3 is the gem of the series for gameplay, while MKII is great for what it is, MKI for its intial shock factor and introduction of a great storyline and characters. Other than that, MK4 (while a fun game, but so far from an actual MK game) and all the shit after (NOT including Shaolin Monks which is a GREAT game, especially co-op) have been pretty embarassing. Deadly Alliance had the best potential of the 3-D MK’s, but Deception quickly killed off chance of building a serious 3-D fighting engine. Like I just mentioned, Deception is terrible and broken, and Armageddon should never have happened. And ANYBODY who seriously thinks MK:A is tourney worthy should have their membership here revoked immediately and never be allowed to play any fighting games ever again.

I really encourage anybody who thinks MK, especially UMK3 isnt worth a crap, check out match videos on YouTube (examples, type in EWAShock, dedmk or SheissNUssen) or check out gameplay/match videos at UltimateMK.com & DarkTemplarz.com

Long live 2-D, Arcade era MK…and brig the 2-D back, Ed.

Here’s the rundown:

-MK came out, people liked it picked it up.
-More MKs came people still liked it and bought more.
-Somewhere along the line MK lost people, a good amount of people.
-The remaining supporters of MK turned into either A)REAL players of MK or B)stupid fucks that sucked at MK and didn’t know shit about FGs at all, superficial bitches they’re called.
-Then other FGs came out and previous FGs got better. This affected EVERY community, SF and KOF lost people too.
-People started going for 3D fighters and MK tried(MK Gold and such) but that didn’t go to well.
-As time passed people REALLY started to take notice of what was wrong with MK. These people went into 2 groups: A)those who really actually knew of the faults and B) people who are superficial shallow fucks cuz MK wasn’t Tekken or DOA or some shallow shit(like it’s not what the ''cool" kids are playing).
-Then MK: DA came and people liked MK more but between SC, Tekken, DOA, and VF, MK wasn’t at the top. MK DA was good. It just lacked a few things like more fatalities. It was getting there,it just had to prove itself.
-Then Deception came out. And whoa Boon fucked up MK for good. Just when people started having faith in MK again Boon ruins it. This further fuels the distaste towards MK. And yes the ignorant became even more ignorant and the shallows fucks who poison the MK community made it even worse(why SRK doesn’t like the MK community).
-MK A came and that made things even worse. All Boon had to say was “It’s a dream match there is no story” and blam. One problem solved. Drop in graphics, fighting styles(a big blow for me), and other BS hurt MK even more and again further fueling the hate towards MK. And you know what happens then.

As for SRK bashing on the series, it’s simple. MK dropped when it went 3D. Whereas SF may have a lot of re-releases, it was to make the game better and it did. Capcom gave Sf fans good times(they milked SF no doubt). If an old 2D fighter makes it to major tourney events that speaks volumes. MK fell and the other games didn’t bring it back up until MK DA and Deception sank that ship. The other 3D fighters took the 3D stage and there were a lot of other 2D FGs out too. In 3D MK lost and in 2D, MK lost again. This leaves the faithful MK players who are actually good and the shallow, superficial fucks who think MKA is the greatest thing since oxygen. Now I’m not saying SRK doesn’t have it’s problems(look at the SF4 thread), SRK backs SF and not MK not because it’s a SF site but rather a place where people who are HAPPY with the SF series can come together and have matches and discussion on SF whereas MK letdown a lot of people. Add that to a lack of great MK players(and tourney matches) like there are for the other FGs that made it(Tekken,SF,GG,KOF,SC,DOA) and MK fails hard.

SF continued to satisfy it’s followers and MK did not. People’s reactions to SF4::lovin: and people’s reactions to MK8::confused:. People had their points as to why they supported their series and those points couldn’t be found with MK hence why any MK players left like UMK not MKA. the MK series failed to prove itself(hell it can’t even hold it’s own) and that’s why things are the way they are today. MK cannot compete with the other series. Simple as that. Now I know SRK has superficial, shallow fucks and does any community but SF has proven it can compete with the other games.

Bottom line: SF makes(made) people happy and MK has not for a long time.

Just a question, I am not really all that into MK. But I have played through the various iteriations at one point or another.

I do clearly remember one thing from when I was younger.

Freeze. Uppercut. Slide.

Wasnt that an infinite in MK1? (I could totally be wrong, but if so wouldent that make MK1 completly worthless in tourny play?)

Ya it was Sonya, Sonya is the god tier of Mortal Kombat 1. http://www.ultimatemk.com/cguide.php?character=mk1sonya&game=mk1arcade

Ok, I got some kinda dumb questions about MK:A.

  1. Is it at least good for stupid fun with casual players?
  2. Can you change a character’s height in Create a Character?
  3. I have a friend who would probably dig the create a player mode, but is kinda squeemish. Is there a way to tone down the blood and fatalities in this one?

Depends on the version you are talking about. Between Rev 1 and Rev 5 MK1 changed a lot. And the console versions were completely diffrent (PC and Amiga were very close to Rev 3.0).

I am pretty sure the Freeze is blockable after a slide but there are some weird rules that might create instances where it isn’t. For instance, if you throw someone, there is a period where the opponent cannot block. So if you throw someone you can get a freeze Freeze or Spear afterwards. Also, I was just reading about Raiden’s torpedo being an inf if done correctly.

But Sonya still rules the game.

EDIT:
@ m121akuma - It’s as playable for casual stupid fun as any other fighting game ever made. If you want to just mess around playing with buds and have never found a fighting game so bad that you can’t at least mess around in it, then you can probably play MKA.

Create a Character was really the only entertaining part, although it’s also one of the most broken parts of it. We held a “You break it we bought it” competition when the game first came out and the stuff people found within a couple of weeks of release was unbelieveable.

I’m kind of surprised at the amount of support MK is getting in this thread. Although I did once have a heated debate with some rabid Def Jam Icon fans.

  1. Yeah…for a while, anyway. To be honest, I only got like about three weeks worth of fun out of the game since I got it, and that was only because of the KaF mode. After that…there is just no real motivation to play. No new Fatalities to discover, really crappy endings, a pathetic last boss and everything revealed in the Krypt when you get the game. The hidden stuff was what had me hooked to the previous games, and MKA just killed it. With fire.

If you head on over to UltimateMK’s forums, you’d see a thread where people actually discuss how long (or short) it was before they lost interest in the game. Guaranteed, the bar never rises above two months, if even that long.

  1. Only by choosing the ‘Large’ size when you’re setting the template for your characters. Other than that…no.

  2. Check the Options Menu. There are a few of settings there that allow you to turn off Blood, Death Traps and Fatalities.

It was pretty all right for me, though I was severely disappointed that things that you would expect to find in this mode (such as Tarkatan Blades and Shokan templates) are not even here. Not to mention the fact that you get some pretty asshat moves to choose from (excluding Tombstone Drop). I made some Street Fighter characters in there. The game has virtually every move for Sagat, at least (a shame you can’t have the High and the Low Fireball. Also, do not get me started on the weapons, they SUCK.

I have a personal beef with games that consistently churn out unnecessary ‘anti-sequels’ (Guilty Gear, I’m looking straight at you), but, what you have to remember is that they wouldn’t be making these games unless they saw some marketing potential (as well as the opportunity to add some new things and add a few tweaks), which is something the SF games have in spades. Each version that gets released, people flock to it and virtually conform to it as the new standard.

…Capcom’s inability to count to 3 aside.

Aside from making money (the most obvious reason to do anything), the incremental updates to the Street Fighter II games also enabled Capcom to iron out certain issues that plagued earlier versions and implement features that the fans wanted. Many elements that we view as being integral to the competitive viability of Street Fighter nowadays are the result of this tinkering.

i think the 3D MK games killed it for a lot of people. Bet if Midway went back to 2-d a lot more people would play.

Read my post dammit!

I still wanna see Street Fighter VS Mortal Kombat. Maybe after SF4 comes out, we will actually see that versus game. Ed Boon loves Street Fighter. When SF Alpha Anthologies came out, he played the shit out of that game and he always wanted to see an SF vs MK game…

I’ve beaten pleny of Moloch scrubs who try and do that gay ass 3-hit combo. The trick is to bait them. Besides, Moloch is slow as dirt as well…

Theres no way SF vs MK would work, unless MK characters were redrawn to look/work more like SF characters.

Very true. It just wouldnt work.

Now…a Capcom vs DC…now that would FUCKING ROCK!

I totally agree and I understand that, but at the time, thats what really pushed me away from SF. Thank God for Marvel: COTA and the entire VS series. But as you can probably tell, MK is my favorite series, and will always be.

But my biggest beef is the SF elitists who put MK down for a number of reasons, when in fact, one of the main reasons is because they suck at it and would rather spam Ryu & Ken fireballs all day long. Anywho, this isnt the point of my post…
