"whats a kick" - barlog thread

I’m not sure if this has been discussed or shown in a video yet, but what I’d love to know is if this 3f st.lk whiffs on crouchers or not!?

You know, I don’t remember that being shown from the two videos we got.

Hits crouching, there’s a small moment of someone pressing it after a rush punch against a croucher.

I love the full screen CA, if you jump backwards with less than a third health you’re dead baby.

Also the Dashing Upper anti-air into CA is hella cool though pretty impractical and has an awkward timing from what I saw.

I have two questions.

  1. What are the changes they made to TAP
  2. Can you maintain a charge while using his v-skill, as in using it to move forward without having to let go of down-back?

Vesper says in the video above that you can maintain charge while using V skill to move forward in a similar way that Guile’s Bazooka knee allows you to.

TAP is 2 punch or two kick to charge instead of 3. You can CA after it hits but the most damage people have seen it do is about 40% after being charged for a long time (again according to Vesper).

I literally just watched the video.

is the feeling that Balrog has good buttons?

Pretty much. He has everything he needs to be solid in the neutral game and has a really good pressure game once he’s in. He has good space control as before plus most of his normals are safe on block. He has solid anti air normals, good pokes, a 3f jab, and I’m guessing frame traps will be discovered shortly after he is released.

His only glaring weakness at the moment is his wakeup. Like many in the cast, his only invincible wakeup option is CA. His armored move isn’t armored at frame 1 so they still get meatied out. Pretty much similar to (non vtrigger) Alex on wakeup but with a 3f jab.

In regards to buttons -

St.hp looks to be one of the best “throw it and forget” buttons. Good range, good start-up, doesn’t even look more than -2, could be even or + on block from footage I’ve seen.

Cr.mk looks brilliant as a counter-poke tool into his stomp target combo, his hurtbox may be lowered/disjointed slightly.

Sweep has some great range and really fast start-up, great whiff punish tool for a free knockdown.

Cr.mp looks solid as usual, I saw PR_Rog mention that if it has a late cancel property then you’ll be able to hit confirm into rush punch which is super strong.

St.mp/cr.hp look like god tier anti-airs, cover good distances and have super high reaching hitboxes. You won’t be able to jump in at a good Rog.

Between st.hk/st.mk/cr.lk/st.lp you have some good buttons for close pressure as well, he has an easy time keeping himself + on block whilst retaining charge.

All-in-all, the buttons look solid. I’d go as far as saying he may have some of the best if not the best non-command normal set in the game from the videos I’ve seen.

In regards to wake-up -

It isn’t actually as big of a weakness as it was in previous games, sure you can’t disrespect their wake-up for free like Ken/Cammy/Ryu/Necalli but because of backroll/delaying wake-up/quick wake-up you can fuck with peoples meaty timing on the fly and disrespect their meaty with a button due to the difference in timing. Our v-reversal also knocks down and it looks like we get dash-in pressure after it as well which makes up for having no reversal, take Karin or Alex as examples of this. Karin players rarely use their wake-up EX DP and tend to use their v-reversal a hell of a lot more. It’s because it gives you free pressure if it lands, Alex’s does the same.

Hmm I didn’t consider that about his vreversal. I would just like to add that if i remember correctly, Dahlgren mentioned that it was -2 on block.

Considering that it is airborne as well, does that mean it is not throwable? I guess it depends on which frame he is classified as airborne, but if so, jab vreversal baits into throw won’t work on him like it does on most of the cast.

awesome they made him exactly what he should be, really happy he’s got a good button kit. they basically chopped guile’s balls off with the crappy set of normals he got.

I think apart from Cammy and maybe 1 or 2 others, the universal rule is that if a v-reversal is blocked it’s -2. Some v-reversals just give different advantages on hit, Chun-Li’s for instance leaves them standing and at a bad distancing for her to really mount any great pressure, so her v-reversal is kinda ass in comparison to say Karin/Mika/Alex/Balrog.

You can still throw him, we tested it and you can treat it like any other v reversal. Jab then throw will still work.

And as far as I know aren’t all v reversals bar Cammy -2?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZN8fidFklg

Yes many vreversals are -2, but whenever I see Balrog’s headbutt get blocked, I’m hardwired from SF4 to expect a hard punish XD

The way it looks, Balrog should be able to OS V-skill on CC confirms in similar fashion to how Ken can. I know you can regular dash forward but maybe v-skilling in while retaining charge can lead to more optimal damage?

vs is only projectile invincible and all cc buttons are minus… you will be punished

He’s talking about the CC OS, the v-skill will only come out if you get a crush counter. Ala Ken v-skill os into his run.

St.hk is +

I’ve got an idea for a new character. He will be a little white guy that attacks with kicks. I will call him Gorlab.

oh my b

vs overhead looks like ~30 frames startup and cc adv is never that long so i dont think it will work
