What would be your opinion if the roster is like 70-80% the same as USFIV?

CAN’T STOP ME NOW!!!

if Charlie is in, I’d say deejay and guile are out. but I do believe Remy might be in. who knows.

I think the original WWs could be cool, and even some of the bosses. I don’t want to see Cammy/Fei/Hawk/DeeJay though. All these characters had tools they could spam fairly safely and would reap good damage with little effort or acknowledgement to mind games. Dee Jay was all cross up combo to MK sweep, rinse repeat, Cammy similar effect with dive kicks, Fei with rekka/chicken wing, and T Hawks stupid condor spire. I felt there were times playing against these characters that I couldn’t even fight for frame advantage. I had to straight give it up because if I tried anything I’d get hit out of it. Or if I was looking to counter, my counter would get beat, or would end up whiffing too. There was just too much risk compared to the virtually risk-free offense of the “new challengers”

And of course these characters aren’t the only guilty ones, but to me they represent old characters that turned out bad in one way or another when trying to be updated for the new generation. Like let’s think about Honda vs Sim. I’d be so happy if I saw a match where a Honda player does nothing but walk in, block, do hands on occasion, and goes for throws if he gets in or a knock down. But he wouldn’t do this because he doesn’t know how to do charge moves, he does this because Sim’s runaway game should actually be good where Honda can’t use charge to just close the whole gap.

I like situations where a character doesn’t use certain tools because they’re not a good idea. There should never be a situation where somebody does a certain special because “there are no better ideas” and they need that free way into huge damage. Fighting games should always be defined by high risk = high reward. And for SF, it should by and large be moderate risks except in extreme circumstances.

heres my list.

  1. Ryu
  2. Ken
  3. Chun-Li
  4. Charlie
  5. M.Bison
  6. Sagat-just cuz he’s been everything except SF3
  7. Alex-a new grappler no one really hates and everyone likes
  8. Dudley-too popular right now
  9. Juri-8th most popular SF character
  10. Karin-everyone wants her in cuz of her distinct moveset
  11. Rose-too popular right now
  12. Cammy-too popular not to include
  13. Remy-counterpart to Charlie, deejay and guile alternative choice
  14. Eagle-?
  15. Gief-360 grappler?
  16. Hugo-ditto?

these are just guesses. no favoritism or anything. hell, I personally hate cammy(sf4) and rose. and Dudley. and Bison.

I don’t care if they’re new or old, as long as they’re not lazy copy jobs.

You guys think Urien and Gill might be making a comeback? I mean look at the charlie trailer, the gem on his forehead is very similar to Gill and Uriens gem. Also I’m pretty sure this game takes place after SF3 3rd Strike because of obvious reasons, denjin hadouken, similar gameplay etc. I also really hope they put Akuma!

My 2 cents about classic cast

Ryu- in

Ken- i hate have 436 shotos, but the dude deserve to be in, him and Ryu are the two faces of the same coin. I think we will see him in starting cast, if not, they will use him as marketing move for first wave of dlc.

Chun- in

Guile- i can live without Guile in SFV, we have Charlie. I think he will arrive at some point as dlc.

Zangief- i REALLY hope he end up in SFV. Easily most iconic big grappler of SF, great everything under the charawhatever point of view. I think he have decent chances to be in, but maybe as later dlc (classic pack? Him, Guile etc?)

Dalshim- i will like Dalshim in SFV, but i think he’s not going to be in

Blanka- one of the few classic i can cut without think twice

Honda- one of the few classic i can cut without think twice

Boxer- as lifelong fan of Iron Mike is strange to say it, but cut the dude. Dudley is just better character under so many point of view

Claw- Easily one of the most unique, iconic and cool characters of SF universe, keep. I have no idea how good are his chances

Sagat- dude is iconic as fuck. I say keep, just tweak him to be less shoto-like

Dictator- in

Cammy- i don’t love too much her gameplay, but her aesthetic (both dat ass and chara design) is too good and too SF at this point imho. As one that usually main males, she and Chun (and now Juri too) are the only females i give fucks about

Fei- i say cut if want cut, just throw in some fast little chinese kung fu dude because for fight games tradition we need it lol

Dee Jay- not even a classic

T.Hawk- not even a classic

My final pick: Ryu, Ken, Chun, Zangief, Guile(?), Cammy, Dalshim, Claw, Sagat, Dictator
Basically i’m not even that conservative or with the “we must keep them ALL”, i just think a decent amount of classics in will make it fell like SF (because like or not SF iconic image is SF2) and not another SF3 style freakshow

The game don’t need to be another nostalgia full immersion a la SF4, but it will be equally stupid don’t take advantage of the immense popularity of classic cast imho

I agree completely with your assessment @Cestus and I’ll add the following regarding the WW and their future in SF:

Cammy - Great and unique concept, one of my favorite characters but not irreplaceable because Dolls. So she’s really a toss up.

Guile - Should be in if Charlie isn’t in. I’m hoping Charlie kills him in this game. Charlie > Guile > Remy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dee Jay

Blanka - If he ever gets the Batman Begins gritty and mature treatment sure, otherwise I want Necro.

Dhalsim - Love this guy but see Blanka.

Zangief - Should always be in unless Haggar.

Honda - Boring. Bye Felicia!

Dee Jay, Hawk, Fei - I don’t mind never seeing them again, I don’t consider them part of the immortal 12, should be avoided, replaced, unless they are completely revamped.

Boxer - Great character, should be in unless Dudley.

Ken - Needs a near complete revamp IMO but he must be honored and remain in every SF game.

Ryu, Chun Li, Sagat, Dictator, Claw - Should be in every main series SF game, henceforth and forever. They all need to freshen up from time to time though to avoid tedium.

I wonder how much rage there would be if sagat, ken, akuma vega didn’t make the cut in vanilla and DLC. I wonder how much rage would erupt.

Cammy- Another doll should be featured instead.

Ryu- Already in.

Ken- No. Iconic but too similar to Ryu

Sagat- See ken

Chun Li- Already in

Dhalsim- Greatest most creatively designed character in all of fighting games. East indian, yoga master who spits fire, stretches limbs. Must include

Fei Long-Karin is a much much better rekka character, so he can be left out (plus he was very boring in SF4)

Zangief-Oh yeah he has to be in. The ultimate large slow grappler.

Balrog-Only if they make him much more aggressive, like ST (and like how Mike Tyson really fought)

Vega-Yes

Bison-Pretty much confirmed

Honda-They would have to radically revamp his design. Sumo wrestler, that is pretty cool. They could do a lot with that.

Blanka-Emphasize his bestial nature more. Again with a revamp could be interesting.

T Hawk- No. The condor dive and spire stuff is cool, however he doesn’t really stand out.

Dee Jay-No. Obviously Dimps doesn’t know what to do with this character

Guile-No. We already have Charlie

I have seen multiple people say that Guile should not or will not be part of the roster because Charlie is in. But I believe that is faulty logic. For one thing: from what we have seen, Charlie plays nothing like Guile which makes the clone argument sort of odd. And another thing: if what Capcom has been saying about wanting a more fleshed out story is true, then Guile would be needed because, well, his entire story revolves around avenging or finding Charlie.

And, when it comes to who of the original 8 I think will not be in, my money is on Honda. Here are the reason why:

  1. He is not a developer favorite (Blanka)
  2. He is not the most popular of a certain archtype (Zangief)
  3. He serves no story relevence (Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li Guile)
  4. And, I know this one is streching it, he was not in SFxT (Dhalsim)

Just my two cents.

Actually I think the WW’s will be in it…just not playable. They could be just story elements. Much like how some characters who died in MK9 came back in MKX as enemies or cameo appearances only.

Like it’s possible you could fight them in game but not have them playable. Makes sense. Though it may still generate backlash from fans (character loyalty obviously) but at least then they’re aren’t COMPLETELY left out for their fans to see.

I’ll be happy if Rose makes it in, and if she does, I hope she plays like Omega Edition Rose.

This is not some bs MK game, I doubt they will waste money to create unplayable “story characters” with moveset (aside being a stupid move that will just make peoples angry)

A more simple and pratical way will be little tribute in stages, be it have some of them in low poly as bystanders (already done in SF4) or with little details like that Fei movie advertising on the SFV bus

yeah I’m fairly impartial to any of the WW8, and SF4’s story was just strange regarding them. Like Seth assimilated all their data somehow in his lab, then they all left oblivious of their abduction? And went on to participate in the tournament hosted by their abductor? There’s like no semblance of concept.

The WW8 could be in the story, and then have “descendents” kind of taking their roles in game like how SF3 did it. As it’s going right now, Charlie reminds me of Akuma crossed with Decapre and Seth. So presuming there’s going to be new characters in the game, they’re likely going to resemble other characters of the SF series, while those characters are left out.

I just hope that whichever classic characters get included, it’s not because of popularity or favoritism as that was more of a matter of how strong of a character they were rather than being fun and having a balanced design.

Except that never happened. Like ever.

I also hate the whole descendants thing, MK recently took it overboard in MKX and it’s really a cop out and lacks creativity. Nothing can ever replace the original.

Fortunately Street Fighter is not playing into this “descendants” thing, they give the character “successors” instead, like Dudley and Necro. I personally prefer Necro over Dhalsim, I think he’s a good replacement and does not play quite the same at all, but I like him even better than Dhalsim.

The “descendants” stuff might work on MKX, in fact I like what I’m seeing, but as for Street Fighter, that has never taken their storylines and characters that seriously, I think the “successors” thing is much better fitting.

descendants… successors… potato potato. Wait who was Dudley a successor to? Don’t say boxer. Q was more of a boxer successor.

The Successor thing is a hit or miss, generally leaning more towards the latter.

It worked with Charlie but was a miserable failure with Remy and maybe even Dee Jay.

I think Necro is superior to Blanka and Dhalsim, but this is greatly due to neither of them ever getting modernized and adapting to the times.

I’m more a supporter of bringing back the old character and refreshing them while keeping many of the main ingredients. Make them feel new.
