I’ll just make this question and get it over with, hope you reply to it this time: Do you even go to tournaments? This question matters because if you don’t, you don’t have to worry about your mains being “viable characters”.
Do take into account that I’m not making this post as an elitist cunt, this is just the way it is, if you don’t play in tournaments, you don’t have to worry about “viable” characters at all.
Yes I play offline quite a bit, but I haven’t yet officially entered any tournament for SF4. So it matters to me personally a lot.
However your question is just directed at one person, myself.
The basic point is ES being the standard will close the game completely to a ton of people. Anyone who plays offline will be greatly effected, cause the standard will be the game.
However since you are questioning me personally, don’t you think it is incredibly selfish to reduce by 50% or more the amount of viable characters? Take yourself out of the equation and look at it. It’s obvious which version will benefit more people.
Good enough. Good luck with that.
So is your post, you aren’t talking about the struggles that the hordes of Dudley, Hawk, Juri, Fuerte, etc… players will have to endure, you’re talking about how you don’t like any of the potentially viable characters in ES.
Why? If ES ends up being the standard, then it will be because most of the community wanted it so, and the minority would be the people that want to stay playing only Ultra. It’s not like 10 people will force the rest of the world to play ES, if people want Ultra, we’ll play Ultra, if people want ES, we’ll play ES, easy.
Not if a good number of them overlap in their gameplans. Having 3 unique grapplers (Hugo, Hawk and Gief) that are uniquely mediocre doesn’t interest me as much as having a really viable grappler in the form of Vanilla Gief. Grappler players could end up enjoying that character, and even if they don’t, there’s a good enough number of viable characters (from what we think right now) that adapting to one of them shouldn’t be too much of a hassle if you really like the game. 3s and MvC2 were big on this, maybe there were a ton of bad characters, but there was a big enough number of playstyles to make balance a non-issue in the eyes of most of the people that played and loved those games, there’s no reason to play Iceman if you can use Cable and zone with a good character, there’s no reason to use Elena when you can use Chun and do pretty much the same but with much better tools and damage. You may not be able to use the exact gameplan you love, but after using good tools, you will be able to adapt and have fun with the actual good character with the actual good gameplan.
Yes if ES becomes the standard version it is because the majority wanted so, respect majority rule. There are still people who play Super to this day, they have a ranking system for them and they play the version they like the most. I assume that they wish Super was the standard version, but they deal with it.
Also unless you’re a competitive player who enters major tournaments, who the hell cares about viability? Do you think online players give a damn about that? I rarely see top tier characters online, mid tier characters or even low tier characters are a lot more popular. I play online mostly and I enter local tournaments 3-4 times a year, so I don’t give a damn about what goes in major tournaments because it doesn’t concern me. If you’re a casual player it doesn’t concern you, and the majority of the player base are casual players.
Hey if that is what the majority decides on, there is nothing anyone can do. This is all arguing on what version should be standard, but whatever tournament organizers and majority of pro players decide to do, that will be it.
However Ultra hasn’t even been released yet, I think it deserves a chance before considering ES. If u wanted to replace AE 2012 with ES (and Ultra didn’t exist), I could really care less.
Also ES is not going to be in arcades, or even online. Those are hurdles to conquer before even considering it becoming the standard.
They should just have a top tier tournament. Only the top 10 vanilla characters, ae yun, yang and fei.
Or leave it for ratioed team battles. V.sagat is a ratio 2 character so he can only be partnered with a ratio 1 character S.Rose for example.
Its ES go nuts, why keep tournies for this traditional??
Strange that they wouldn’t have an Online mode for ES. As previously stated above (somewhere), they could set-up a search for ES or Ultra as they have with SSFIV and AE. This way the online warriors can train for Ultra tournaments (theoretically speaking; doubtful that tourney players train solely online if at all) and then you have the ES version to explore the insane plethora of match-ups/outcomes possible.
I do agree with the perspective that there are FAR too many variables at the moment to make an “educated” decision about ES tournaments.
Edition Select or bust. Might as well ban version select in all ST tournaments from here on out. Fuck Jebailey, fuck Wizard, let the floodgates open and let the meta sort itself out.
Ultra is the best version for many characters - this might be their chance at standing up to the old threats.
I think Mike is highly pessimistic. We are still debating the tier list for v.2012, do you really think anybody has a real clue how a tier list for ES would look like ?
My own opinion is that a lot of characters would be viable - I would dare say maybe even more viable than in Ultra - and when I say viable I don’t mean having a chance to qualify in top 32.
I’m not even sure V. Sagat would be the best character in the game. As for Oni, I would be higly surprised if U. Oni wouldn’t be viable in ES.
People jump at conclusions too fast. I’m not saying replace Ultra with ES. I just say - give it a chance. If we don’t like it, then toss it up. But if we do like it…why not ?
Actually it seem the opposite to me, the 50% of me that want it to be keep offline is the half with the more global vision: want see people push UFS4 new options/mechanics, don’t want the community split in half, kinda hate the idea of people cling to the highest tier of theyr char instead give USF4 a chance
2 of my 3 mains were better in the past (some probably will say all 3), so the 50% that will love ES is the most individualistic one
My opinion is just that after months and months of wait i want play (and play against) USF4, if truly ES will end up become the standard i hope they at least push it to the next (PS4 rumor?) version, just to give Ultra the time to to be appreciated
I have no problems with giving it a chance…after Ultra has had its chance, just like every previous version of this game. That’s why I said I could care less if there was no ultra and ES replaced the current version, AE 2012. Let Ultra develop and run it’s course in the spotlight first. Give Ultra a chance, then toss that up if it doesn’t work. After all that is the version that has been discussed for a year, and tested, and worked on, etc.
As someone else mentioned before, comparing Edition Select to ST is not a good comparison. You should compare it to SF2 Anniversary Edition, which is the same situation. They did try that one but stopped using it when they saw how much of a clusterfuck (in terms of balance) it could be. Now, I’m not saying Edition Select will be the same situation, but I can see why TOs would not want to risk having that happen again.
Projection everywhere. The only ones crying are those who realised that Edition Select is offline only and that it won’t be tournament standard. But don’t be too upset you’ll finally get to crossplay with the character version you’re already using against your local buddies and tournament organizers might consider having Edition Select as a side tourney if you beg.
The rest will “adapt” to the new character balance and system changes in USF4.
Then there’s something wrong with me.
I want ES separated from Ultra for online and I accept Ultra as the tournament standard.
Lol @ people vouching for it online. I can see it now…
*Argues for ES online
*Capcom obliges and makes it online
…
*ES still not available in training mode…
they said it would be offline only. training mode is offline so…
It was confirmed that Ono is reconsidering whether or not Edition Select will also be online.
Figured that would be up to Ayano, but what do I know about how the gears in Capcom turn these days.
Ono said he would make a CVS2 OE too. Never trust an Ono
