My belief is that you only need to be intermediate skill to commentate. The rest you either fill in with hype or knowledge.

Zhi, please don’t start doing suite-and-tie commentary. Your fun commentary is the only thing that makes me tune into the SSF4 games sometimes, and you’re chemistry with Mike Ross is particularly delicious (you two should definitely do an excellent adventure together!).

P.S. please ask Daigo to hurry up getting his book translated into english, i’ve been waiting ages

I think that fashion does need to get cleaned up a bit. Suit and tie may be overkill, but the business casual of EVO is the right way moving forward. Mike is the easiest to work with because of the humor. Daigo’s book…we’re working on it. An official version is already out in Chinese.

I’m a big fan of Zhi. he’ll drop some crazy/hilarious analogy or a unique term for a word/action youve heard a million times. I think Xian just needs to keep working on his game so itll be a 1-2 punch instead of a jab, uppercut. Xian does provide great technical insight, just needs to be wary of saying stuff like oh im tired/bored. disinterests the listener. i like david and chen the best. I feel they get the most hyped in the right way.

Can’t agree with you more. Everyone wants to listen what the champ has to say. Again, UltraChen is the golden standard. They excel at having terrific chemistry and a sense of familiarity with the viewer that can only be established through countless hours of content.

All this talk of professional/unprofessional commentary makes me wonder what people from SC/Dota/LoL think about FG commentary. Are they amused or bothered?

Can’t really comment on the first two communities, but there is a hidden ninja group of pro LoL players and personalities (Scarra, ClakeyD, Marn, etc ) that watch our scene. Already you can hear certain terms from the fgc pollinate the esports scene. (“body”, “free”)

I like Xian on the mic a lot. Zhi is great too but the only thing about is commentary is when his pop culture references start feeling a little hamfisted and forced it’s groan worthy. That and the creeper factor of his girl commentary, I dunno why but Rockefeller comes off way less creepy when he does it XD

I can get overbearing. Once Xian gets into the groove, he’ll spit out some crazy tech that is only known on the highest level. The goal is to get more ougi level ninjutsu out of him this weekend.

Just needs to tone down the offensive material and it’s all good. Definitely can’t beat the guy on SF4 player/game knowledge.

But yeah…less sexist, gay and dick jokes would definitely be a plus - especially if it’s on a stream with its reputation to consider.

I wanted to do the Family Guy route and leave no one unscathed, but more PC commentary would be a plus.

I honestly don’t give a fuck about Xian and his commentary, and I didn’t know people gave an actual fuck about his commentary. So you think that Tokido would make for a good commentator simply because he’s a top player?

There is a huge swath of knowledge that cannot be found in any forums or videos because top players rarely go out in public to talk about specific setups. Whenever a top player gets the chance to go on mic, everyone from peasants to AlexTheKing, should pay attention.

Zhi is godlike. Lets do a checklist:

-Knowledgeable
-Doesnt take the game too seriously
-Maintains the balance between comedic and serious commentary extremely well (too many pedants and droll commentators out there)
-Has a sexy voice (sounds like jazzy joyce)
-Brings the hype

What else do you guys want? I guess hes had a few gaffs but there is literally no commentator out there that is perfect though. Zhi is easily a top tier commentator. And while im at it fuck all the Ski haters, man is also GDLK.

EDIT: The commentators we need to worry about are the ones that perceive themselves to be funny but really just suck, no names offhand but i have watched many a cringeworthy stream from local tourneys

Clakey and Marn did come from the FGC though, so it’s more like them pulling people back into it.

The thing is though, it’s actually hard to keep coming up with pop culture references on the fly while doing commentary. Zhi needs to be commended for how fast he’s able to think this stuff up.

As for Rock, it’s probably because it sounds like jokes between friends (which they are to a point).

There are multiple audio feeds at certain streams like YUBIKEN TV. Maybe when production values get high enough there can be dual audio, or even different camera angles that can be selected.

Come on guys, a little flavor never hurt anyone. The absolute best thing about Zhi’s commentary is that Xian is so comfortable with him, and Zhi can lead him through commentating so he can just drop knowledge. I’ve learned an absolute ton about characters I previously had no experience with, just because Xian is on the mic with Zhi.

But above all else, respect the work and the dedication. This guy has basically given himself over to the FGC, mind and body. You don’t like his particular brand of commentary? That’s fine, to each their own I suppose, but to say that Zhi is a detriment to this community is a joke. If you think Zhi is a detriment, then what the hell do YOU do for the FGC?

Zhi, you’re not my favourite commentator, and you were totally rude to me one time at Canada Cup, but don’t change who you are and what you do over some idiotic comments on SRK. People who care enough about the FGC to complain about stuff like this need to find some other way to contribute, cuz if they don’t contribute, their opinion doesn’t matter imo

Zhi has, sometimes, a wicked sense of humor. But I consider this a benefit, not to mention he’s a good translator, has a good knowledge of the games, it’s funny and good at improvising jokes, most of the time using obscure or unknown references, wich is always nice.

I must admit that I let a few of his jokes fly over my head, tough.

This is to say that Zhi is godlike and I love his commentaries.

I was watching the Daigo vs Infiltration FT10 live, here at work (using headphones) and I was trying real hard to not laugh loudly with his commentaries…

Zhi probably shouldn’t be interviewing people, I’ll admit that lol. But his commentary is definitely one of a kind. I’m a big fan of his in game commentary, and I find it hard as to why people dislike it so much. Anyways, I find people like Art(I think) with that ratchet ass commnetary style who needs to be taken off stream.
