If you don’t understand Zhi’s sense of humour, just turn off the stream and go outside. Not everything has to be professional all the time. And if you actually think he’s serious when he “tries to get girls” or makes awkward/gay-sounding jokes…LOL.
With great corporate power comes greater corporate responsibility.
What you say on the side with your inner circle is your business, but when you’re on the payroll of a sponsoring company you put your game face on and deliver in a professional way. I don’t think he (Zhi) does that. For now it’s open for discussion, but if FG’s are to be taken seriously as e-sports, with exposure to a global audience, you need to balance your ‘edginess’, with mass appeal. In the current state he can get away with silly remarks, but long term it is bound to cause aggravation at some point.
While some viewers may appreciate his style, to me it seems that most of the time he comes across like a twat.
I’m a big fan of Zhi. he’ll drop some crazy/hilarious analogy or a unique term for a word/action youve heard a million times. I think Xian just needs to keep working on his game so itll be a 1-2 punch instead of a jab, uppercut. Xian does provide great technical insight, just needs to be wary of saying stuff like oh im tired/bored. disinterests the listener. i like david and chen the best. I feel they get the most hyped in the right way.
Xian should commentate more
Stop hating on UltraChen.
Those guys do a lot for the community and especially for newbies.
Does this mean you will only cover the qualifiers and won’t get any mic time when the real deal starts?
Art I think you’re reading it wrong. I’m a huge fan of UltraChen and I would never have gotten into commentary if it weren’t for both of them. What I’m saying is that we fill in for the Golden Standard at events that they can’t possibly attend. Its a shoddy replacement, but better than nothing (but even this is up for debate)
So you want a dude from Singapore, who was commentating at a tournament in Singapore, to “work on” his Singaporean accent?

Agreed. Everything should be matched to occasion. While I disagree that commentary is what is holding back corporate sponsorship, I believe more professionalism on the mic is necessary and will make the adjustments more quickly. Thanks for the feedback.
Whats the meaning of your profile picture? Is that what you ate today?
i like everything about Zhi commentating , while he might make mistakes like every human being, he has very in depth Sf knowledge that i rarely hear from any other commentator ( the only other one being Ken bogard but well its in french ) , and if you think otherwise then you really dont know a single shit about high level play for this game
all jokes are bonus, he also know when to be all serious like for EVO, i cannot imagine e-sport style boring to death commentary for a FG, its just impossible, and guess what ? you’re on the internet, if you dont like it just turn on your TV and enjoy you’re clean mindless bullshit
I don’t have any issue with his style of commentary. I think with SF4 he seems quite insightful, and the color commentary works fine. just wish that when people asked “will you commentate this game you don’t know that well” that everyone could agree to find someone else if available. I watched all the 25th Anniversary qualifiers and while there was a lot to like, it was clear that no one involved had any love or complete understanding of Third Strike, enough to give competent commentary. there’s gotta be someone around who knows and loves the game.
I’m talking when he does commentary in english, you never heard him commentating in english? I’m a french speaker and my accent in english isn’t pronounced. Zhi doesn’t have an accent and he speaks more than 3 langages, that’s not an excuse.
Zhi is the only English speaking commentator in the world who gives high level SF commentary coupled with intimate, legitimately interesting knowlege on high level Japanese players (e.g., how they approach the game, their game play habits. This is something you could only get from someone who speaks the language and interacts with them on a regular basis). He is the ONLY person in the world who does this right now.
He is one of the English speaking SF community’s biggest assets when it comes to commentary right now. It’s crazy to tune out on him just because of a few un-PC jokes you don’t like.
It’s foolish that Zhi has felt he needed to come on here and apologise for his commentary.
So all commentators should be like the few the OP prefers?
If you don’t like his commentary, you just don’t like his commentary. This thread could have been made for any commentator.

Funny thing is a lot of people would usually commend someone, you included, for speaking more than one language. If we have a problem with Xian’s accent, we could always learn his native tongue and listen to him commentate in his first language, where his accent wouldn’t be a problem.
The criticisms are becoming more unfair.
Well he should work on his pronounciation should I say, but the content is good, he knows his stuff.
doesn’t everyone from Singapore speak English as the main language? pretty sure it’s just an accent, not a second language “problem” if you want to call it that. it’s like asking a British guy to start sounding more American.
Alex is just being a dick. He could speak the most perfect English in the world, but no one would want to listen to him speak, much less commentate.
People listen to Xian because he’s the goddamn Evo champ, not for the quality of his English. Never forget that.
If Ultrachen is the future of FGC commentary I want nothing to do with that shit. This suit and tie business is wack as fuck IMO.
Eh I’m not much of a stream monster anyway, would much rather actually be at events so I’m biased against this professionalism bullshit anyway.
With that said Zhi is one fo the few SSFIV commentators who doesn’t make me wanna mute the stream, primarily because he’s alot more relaxed and less professional than most others.
Once again also biased seeing how most of my own commentarry is more like Dogface or Rockefellar than Ultrachen.
I honestly don’t give a fuck about Xian and his commentary, and I didn’t know people gave an actual fuck about his commentary. So you think that Tokido would make for a good commentator simply because he’s a top player?

Completely agreed with the post, and the highlighted comment/attitude in particular. I like UltraChen though lol.
