FGC is actually e-sports.
Same fucking deal just with broke ass motherfuckers instead of millionaires.
I’d go so far to say the fgc actually started all this e-sports shit.
SF2 was probably the first game where people met and played for money.
Sad to see that it’s actually the worst in terms of actual prize money nowadays, because Japanese developers didn’t put their focus on the internet to get more white people and sponsors into the game.
I fuck with old Rockefeller commentary because that’s what it is–old. Just like I fuck with old Yipes commentary for the same reason. It’s from a different time in a different venue. I mean, during every Rock video I’ve ever seen, he addresses the players directly damned near the entire time he’s commentating. It’s like a group of friends in an arcade. It’s not the same anymore. Look at it like this: commentators are now wearing shirts and ties in the booth at some events. Why is that? As far as I can tell, it’s to make them appear more professional. If you’re gonna look the part, maybe you should act it also? /shrug
Zhi @Zhieeep 34m @D3Vlicious I believe it should be a divisive issue. So long as it’s not boring and uninformed it’s fine.
Zhi @Zhieeep 35m @D3Vlicious the other partner commentator should be likable to balance the content out, which is why we have two.
I get his point. The best commentary IMO is always when it’s one “straight man” working with a color commentator. To use a pro wrestling analogy, you can’t have your Good Old JR without your Jerry “the King” Lawler (or, for you older fans, no Gorilla Monsoon without Bobby “the Brain” Heenan).
AMERIKAJIN @jiyunaJP 31m @Zhieeep@D3Vlicious I approve of Zhi commentary! I assume like 80% of the jokes/puns fly over the average stream monster’s head, though!
You just linked to an 8.5 hour long archive. Provide time-stamps or something.
Also is anyone that’s actually important making an issue out of this? Previously there have been changes if sponsors threaten to do something or crappy video game journalism sites, with thousands of readers, put out articles. Anything like that happen in the, apparently, 4 months since this thread was first brought into existence?
The only major change I know of is that Zhi was actually hired by on of the sponsors (as I said, he’s now MadCatz marketing manager for the Asia-Pacific region).
God, everyone tries to sound the same, not a single inappropriate comment over a 60 minute game.
Everybody starts screaming when the action starts and talks strictly about the game at hand when there’s only farming going on.
At least we got people like Zhi and James/David here who have completely different casting styles.
Your talking about choosing between watching a stream about dudes playing fighting games. Why are you catching feelings? Niggas is here sayin zhi needs to get off commentary gettin they panties in a bunch. Howabout you guys relax and play a game? Fuck or mute the damn mic,
I’m sorry to anyone I ever offended. Tune in this weekend for Capcom Cup Qualifiers. The commentary will be professional and you can hear the Evo champion Xian’s insights on the game. For the record, Seth Killian > everyone else who ever touched the mic. UltraChen is the future.
Anyway, I get why people don’t like some of his “colour commentary” but I think he’s a guy who can learn from his mistakes. I’m sure he can cool his jets a tad if he has to.
1.) Zhi may be one of the only fluent English speakers in all of SEA. considering he also follows the criteria of being a fighting gamer and understands the game fairly well, id say they didn’t have many options.
2.) Xian, Evo 2013 champion for AE 2012, was also with him. He provided very strong insight from the highest level possible. Granted, not all gamers are good explainers, and the fact that he isn’t 100% fluent in English may have stunted his explanation. Regardless, he let Zhi do most of the talking, while Xian provided the really in-depth stuff. As a pair, they were great.
3.) Consider two people of Xian’s level of English to commentate the events. We may have stronger insight on the analysis, but commentating hype moments and intense battles requires a mastery of a language. If you have commentated before, you’ll understand how hard it is to commentate the crazy moments of games.
4.) Consider, he’s having fun. Let him. If people thought he was an issue, Razer (a massive company who requires an image) or Capcom(no explanation necessary) would of removed him or told him to tone it down.
5.) Noticing that my earlier hypothetical was just that, Zhi understands a great part of this game. He is fit to commentate.
6.) HE LOVES THE FGC. If you need more requirements to commentate other than loving the community, knowledge of the game you are commentating, and the ability to have a good grasp of the language necessary, then people are commentators because they fit the most of those requirements, not all. I.E.- if more than those traits are required, no one has the prerequisites to be a commentator.
TLDR - If you have a problem with Zhi, learn to commentate and go do it yourself.
To follow up on the venerable Samifish182, it is nearly impossible for UltraChen to attend all events worldwide, so we’ve been dispatched to cover events in the forsaken corner of the yellow earth. Consider us as cheap foreplay before the real action in San Francisco Capcom Cup finals in December.
Besides, when it the last time you had an SF 4 EVO champion (Daigo, Fuudo, Infiltration) commentating on a match, much less in English? My presence is just the cost of probing the mind of Singapore’s prodigy player.
One day when Capcom gives us local replay saved to HD, we can all watch SF matches in pure form without annoying commentary. Let’s hope that feature is in Ultra or SF5. Hope to see you all on stream chat this weekend.
