The knife. Please pick up the knife as much as you can.
I remember someone also loosely mentioning that you should just throw Abel on any blocked step kick cause well…what’s he going to do to beat throw? None of his options are fast enough to beat throw.
Otherwise generally stay out of step kick range, outfootsies him. If you get knocked down and have meter by all means waste it on EX upper or EX zonk. I always do and this is probably the only match I willingly wakeup reversal constantly because Abel players don’t bait shit. (at least ones i’ve played rarely do.)
Divekick characters are probably the obvious choice along with Adon. (any jaguar kick= U1. If you don’t have U1, zonk. Normal>jaguar kick isn’t a blockstring so free U1/Zonk if you see it.), Zangief. Basically cause these characters jump to get in. Thus making it easier to HK Ruffian>U1. Gief players WILL jump at some point once you start mixing up rocks and fake rocks if they’re not confident enough in their green hand game. (and just cause they want to get over the rock for a punish.)
Divekick characters are pretty self explanatory. Reckless unsafe divekicks are HK ruffians>U1. Otherwise you’re using s.LP, b+MP, far.HP or Far.HK.
Gonna tweet Valle because he poked one of my pet peeve nerves. Around 80% of the cast can punish LP CU even max range, it’s just a matter of how well / easily they can punish it. I wish people would stop saying otherwise
Shotos:
Ryu - crMK (unless absolutely max possible range which would result in a good chance that Ryu could stand block the tornado and then only get 2 hits blocked). crHK 100% punish as long as you got the timing down it can never whiff but it’s a 1F punish that is admitedly risky if you mess up. sMP works usually too. All supers.
Ken - crMK (100%) kara HP SRK (difficult timing) HP SRK raw (whiffs if Cody got the spacing JUST right. Risky enough not to go for it unless you’re sure. If the first hit of LP CU hits it’s a free punish every time.)
Akuma - crMK (same issue as Ryu, tight timing and wont work at the absolute max possible range) Super works. HP SRK works if the 1st hit of LP CU was blocked
Sakura - crMK / sLK pretty free.
Evil Ryu - sMP usually will hit unless perfectly spaced. HP SRK works if the 1st hit of LP CU was blocked.
Dan - far LK usually hits.
Yeah but Valle flat out said that shotos have to just deal with it. Also, that is only a small snippet. I did my homework ages ago, EVERY character barring Yang and El Fuerte can punish a LP CU on block in some form. And around 75-80% of the cast can do it even when it’s only the tornado part at max range.
Most just don’t do it because it’s usually a 1F punish using a normal attack for around 30-50 damage tops.
He’s got a 5 frame throw invincible command grab, so I prefer to just use a fast normal since step kick leaves you neutral on block, he could still do ex though. Honestly I hate this match up and feel it’s really hard for Cody.
People tend to forget that TT is throw invincible. I feel the MU is solidly in Abel’s favor any time Cody doesn’t have meter. Cody can out poke him but Abel is faster, better at getting in, does comparable (or better) damage, and any attempt to throw abel can lead to a tornado throw to the face and into the mixups.
It’s the MU that reminds me how much I wish Cody had a command throw because he’d be so good with even like a 6-7F startup 100-130 damage command throw to mix inbetween normal throws lol. But y’know, that’s neither here nor there.
when he has meter though, i’m throwing each time. otherwise do whatever is best.
IMO Abel is up there with Akuma once he’s knocked down. Your options suck unless you have meter and even then, still not good. Knife makes this fight bearable though.
The match honestly feels 6-4 in Abel’s favor. Cody basically needs to play PERFECTLY to win…Abel can just rinse and repeat and go have a sandwich.
The only thing I’m finding success in with this match is just staying neutral unless Abel is meterless. Even if you score a knockdown, you might as well just stay neutral. I’ve played quite a few Abel’s the last few days. It’s a crap match. It’s like running a marathon against someone on a bicycle.
honestly I feel helpless in the match without the knife. otherwise i’m staying out of stepkick range and just buffering s.LP/cr.LP>MK Ruffian. Maybe tossing rocks to see what he does.
But once he’s knocked down, I will OS his ass if I can or stay on top of him. Literally bulldog him once you obtain an offense. Just know his options once he has some meter under his belt and if you really don’t want to take the chance to stay on top of him, just sit back. (maybe grab the knife so you can whiff punish whatever crappy normals that aren’t step kick and s.LK.)
Also to note: any blocked step kick while holding the knife = mash cr.lp cause 3 frame chain normal/Abel’s not beating that. the most he can do is EX tornado throw which requires meter.
He thinks Cody’s worst matchup is Fei Long. A MU personally I think is slightly in Cody’s favor in most situations other than in the corner knocked down.
Who cares what Majin Tenshinhan says, he’s not a good or experienced player. Why would he even bother to post that, and why does someone even bother to look at what he thinks?
how the hell does Cody have that many favorable matches? (biggest LoL is Abel)
How the hell is Sagat Unfavorable yet Chun is a favorable match? O-o (or viper. I don’t think Cody does fine against her.)
and yea Fei Long match for Cody is pretty even if anything slightly in Cody’s favor. Any badly spaced rekka is a cr.LK>ruffian. He keeps up fairly well with Fei’s normals.
And just think, this is a guy who had the ear of Dawgtanian at dreamhack and was talking to him about Cody changes in USF4 as well as being a moderator / news poster on the 2nd most viewed site for SF news.
I probably undersell Cody a bit but damn that guy oversells him like crazy. Here is my list if anyone is curious:
A Few notes though: eventhubs doesn’t allow “0.5s” so I want to clear up a couple of the numbers
Cody - Gouken is ~6.5-3.5 at best IMO. NOT 7-3 but I feel it’s Cody’s best MU
Cody - Chun is 5.5-4.5 IMO but you have to have really good fundamentals and patience to lame her out once you have the life lead.
Cody - Zangief I think is 4.5-5.5 for Zangief if Gief is playing slow and smart. If Gief is playing fast and reckless it is in Cody’s favor IMO
Cody - Dhalsim is 3.5-6.5 IMO. It’s a very hard BUT very winnable matchup due to comeback factor and unblockables. The thing is that I’m rating these on two players playing with as few mistakes as humanly possible.
Cody - Seth same as above but just played very dif.
Cody - Evil Ryu is probably 4.5-5.5 not 4-6
Cody - Adon is IMO 5.5-4.5 but it’s very close
Cody - Fei Long is 5.5-4.5 IMO, Cody just has to be sure to avoid getting cornered as much as possible.
Also, to be clear. I don’t think a 6-4 is that bad of a MU. I think that people need to realize that the MUs in SF4 are compressed but not THAT compressed that the majority of the worst MUs are 6-4. I think a lot of people use 6-4 in MUs that should be 7-3 if people were being honest. 6-4 should mean the match up is noticeably in one characters favor but not so much that the other character is handicapped and unable to run their gameplan. Sort of like Makoto vs Dan. 7-3 is where tools start failing and it becomes an obviously uphill battle for one character over the other. 8-2 is where two players of equal skill leaves one player extremely handicapped and basically unable to win without a major mistake from the advantaged player (Sagat - Gief, Guile - Bison). 9-1 is where a player can pick a character that they rarely play or don’t play at all and even beat a more experienced player than them (Blanka - Thawk approaches this one but not QUITE 9-1. It’s a very solid 8-2 though)
