"We finished practicing now?" Cody Match-up Thread

@Canadian_sk8ter That has been used since cody was introduced though

Ya I did that a lot in super. but I’ve completely forgot about it. I barely play any dhalsims

Need some help with the Blanka matchup. I feel like I know it pretty well its just that I keep falling short to a player here locally.

Is a well spaced lp blanka ball punishable? I know you have to do non-reversal ex ruffian. I’m either missing the punish or its not.
U2 chip setup, if it’s meaty I can’t avoid it, if not, I’ve tried jumping the first bit and ex ruffian/ex zonk, but seem to get hit anyways. What’s the best timing for this situation?
Is U2 the goto ultra in this MU? Any situations where U1 is better?
Other than that, are there any good options for his wakeup? Off of throw / H. cu / ruffian / etc? Baiting ex up ball seems like a no brainer, but for rainbow ball just OS FP or what?

Let me know what you think

I think it’s off topic and should go in the critique my cody forums

i’ll try to help out as much as I can here.

  • Blanka balls can be done to be extremely safe if he hits you a certain way. (due to the hitbox on the ball. There are combos that allow him to get the safe ball on hit/block.) Though I have not been able to play any blanka players or try if cody can still punish with Ex ruffian or U2. (I’m sure there’s a thread in the blanka forums on the blanka ball bit seeing that’s where I even found out about it.)

  • I’m sure U2 loses to ex ruffian if it’s not meaty. Are you immediately holding up/forward during the ultra flash? I know you’re able to act much sooner before the screen reverts back to normal.

  • I’d stick with U2 for sure in this match. It punishes U1 the same as Rose (block low, input U2 before Blanka hits you with the high.) I don’t see much use of U1 in this match. Good Blanka players won’t give you an actual reason or way to combo into U1 for free. U2 also punishes blocked balls. (which is obviously huge)

  • Not that I know of. Though trying to do anything against Blanka’s wakeup is pretty risky to begin with. He can just up ball whatever Cody tries to do. I usually test to see if they do anything first. If I know they’re going to do something after the first time, I’ll generally just bait wakeup crap or just walk up on him and start my pressure.

Also note that it helps a ton to have the knife in this match. Throwing rocks/fake rocks from anywhere not full screen is a free slide for blanka so there’s no real reason to not try to go for the knife. (and Blanka can get around projectiles pretty well with or without meter.)

Actually due to the way blanka’s slide works LP Badstone is pretty decent at specific ranges, Blanka can’t easily slide under it due to the fact it loses altitude and fall on top of him during the slide if he does the slide too early. He can only really slide under LP Badstone if he is doing a slide from an unsafe distance. Granted he can on-reaction slide to any badstone pickup (just as most characters can punish it on reaction to startup.) many Blankas aren’t going to be prepared to slide at that range as it’s an unsafe distance if blocked.

MP/HP are def no goes though outside of max range.

also to note (which I completely forgot to throw in), are you blocking blanka balls crouching? cause that may be throwing off your punish timing/ability since it’s expanding your hurtbox. Couple that with strings that allows blanka to hit opponents with the edge of his hitbox that makes balls safer, it may be screwing with your timing and punish overall.

Anyone got some advice against Gen? I got my face smashed in with Oga unblockables in the corner and I’m trying to think of an answer here. Best answer I got is to try to zonk outta dodge and just eat the damage. Focus dashing seems to auto-correct me into a forward dash right back into Gen.

Folks here got any experience fighting Gen?

The only answer I

Honestly the only answer I have is ā€œdon’t get corneredā€. I got smacked with Gen corner unblockable by Yeb at NEC in casuals. Kinda have to just stand your ground and not get pushed into the corner. otherwise you’re just hoping they mess up the unblockable.

Anyone have any sakura advice? I’ve read here to just zone her out, but besides that, any other misc info about her that i can use?

Cody’s s.lp and far s.LK beats pretty much every normal Sakura can play footsies with (except cr.mk. use cody’s cr.lp for that.)

-OS EX zonk or U1 after his back throw safe jump. It will beat all wakeup options. You can also os cr.lp into st.lk + f.mp. It will catch her backdash and it’s comboable after the f.mp hits
-She has a fake cross up setup on cody after her jump smash in the corner. She backdashes, whiffs light tatsu and does a fake cross up heavy punch. This can be blocked as a non-crossup or you can make it whiff by leaving the stick in netural and punishing with throw.
-In certain situations I can avoid lk tatsu as a meaty by forward dashing out of it. but this is not consistent or reliable.
-use st.hk to beat out her tatsus from midscreen

walk forward ex ruffian always works to punish any balls, you can also switch your block to make delayed ex work. You don’t want to reversal. U2 as a punish for lp/ex ball doesn’t work if the blanka knows their stuff.

meaty u2 cody can’t escape.

risk:reward on ex upball is bad better to make blanka burn the bar if he doesn’t have ultra stocked.

I don’t like knife because of how strong focus can be here. when cody grabs it it’s him wasting time.

@Eternal lp rocks in that situation vs a player with strong reactions leads to a trade

Do you guys have any setups that beat Juri pinwheel on her wakeup. She loses invincibility before it becomes active, so it should be possible to stuff it completely. The other option I’m toying with is using meaty cr.lp which recovers before pinwheel starts up. Any thoughts?

Never really thought of that, there must be something that can get a trade at least. (possibly into more damage >:D) I might go into the lab at some point and play around, but in ultra aren’t they giving it more inv frames?

i use close meaty st.lp os cr.lp + cr.hk to also beat backdash

I’m at the point where you can do anything on Juri’s wakeup. It’s not that hard to deal with either EX Pinwheel or counter. EX Pinwheel still doesn’t hit from behind.

Akuma Match Up: On Cody’s wake up, What are the best ways that you have found to get out of demon flip pressure? More specifically the throw demon flip? I have not found an answer to demon flip throw on my wake up. If they did it all day to me I’d lose.

Guess right, if you suspect throw go for jump/EX CU/backdash. Otherwise just stay in the vortex.
