"We finished practicing now?" Cody Match-up Thread

ex zonk knuckle is a safe and sure wake up move for cody, its also a good reversal, practice your tech throws especialy if hes a pattern fighter you should be able to predict when hes going to throw, also ex criminal upper can catch jump ins off gaurd if timed right, and hard ruffian kicks can punsh jumpins while not entirely safe but if you can high ruffian his jump ins it will definetly make him think twice. Just keep in mind Cody is most vunerable on wake up and you always want to avoid knock downs if possible

Ex Zonk Knuckle safe?

Hi guys. Just started playing this game a couple of weeks ago and Cody is my current favorite character and “main”. I have trouble against a load of characters, but I wanted to ask specifically about Dhalsim and Akuma. These guys are so frustrating for me to fight against, and I have no answer for their super-defensive bullshit. Any tips on how to deal with these guys would be very appreciated. I try to use zonk and focus attacks as much as I can, but I just can’t catch up to them. They keep jumping backwards and if I manage to actually get close they teleport away etc.

I wont go into Akuma as that match up takes a lot to cover. You’re best of goign through som eof this thread and gleanign from it what you will.

As for Sim…

When you start a roudn against sim I always start with a quick cr-lp as a lot of sims try to knock you dawn straight away with a cr-mp / HP - your lp should beat it and you can start on a good advantage. If nothing happens just find out what kind of Sim you are fighting. Normally they stay back and lob fire balls at you and cr-HP under then to hit you. Always block his fireballs low if you are within his punchign range…

After this they will likely try to teleport behind you. Make sure that you are ready to throw out FW-MP (gut punch) to catch his teleport. This tool is very useful to make sur eyou don’t get hit too much after his teleport.

I use Ultra 1 for this. Mainly because you can catch his limbs from a great distance and get the full ultra.

You need to try to get in quick against Sim because a decent Sim will try to maintain as mush distance as possible. You can get inside with Cody’s normal attacks quite well. FW-MP (gut punch) is good against his limbs as are pretty much all cody’s normals.Once you are in on Sim it is fairly tough for his to get rid of you so long as you maintina a good cohesive pressure. and knockdowns - just be mind ful of his teleport and option select it where possible. (see below for more on this**)

Remember you can sweep his cr-hp and knock Sim down to allow you to L-RK towards him and start frame trapping (look elsewhere on the forum for what that means but it is cody’s best attack strategy).

EX-RK through his fireballs but don’t do it under normal circumstances as sim will likely hit you out of it.

I dont use bingo too much in this match but some people will argue otherwise. Mainly because i find I need all the buttons at my disposal.

**You can option select against Dhalsim well as he generally likes to teleport back out of trouble after a knockdown. Try options selecting s-lk with LK-RK. Again, look up “option selects” to find out what this means.

Thats kind of it for now as you are just starting out.

I’m sure other have othe rtactics but this seems to work for me most of the time.

Wow, thanks for taking the time to write that. I really appreciate it.

I’ll try to keep the things you said in mind when I face my next Dhalsim and also learn more about option selects and frame traps. Never really knew that you could hit those floppy arms and legs of his when they’re extended either. I definifely have tons to learn and I’m looking forward to it a lot. Can’t believe some people say fighting games are shallow…

Yesterday I was destroyed by a good Seth player (lost 8-9 games and won only once with gimmicky taunt 5 into ex Bingo :)).
I was playing ok until I got knocked down.

Then it was a guessing time as he could do one of the following :

  • ambiguous crossup (which I had a hard time blocking)
  • empty jump to either SPD or low short string (which was followed by a combo or SPD after one or 2 blocked attacks)

A few times I hit him with the EX CU when he went for the throw, I tried backdashing, focussing … nothing helped.

versus Seth, you want to keep him at footsie range and annoy him with your superior pokes. If he tries to OS you, EX bingo him unless he’s familiar with the matchup. Seth DP has 5 frame startup, but don’t try to safe jump it unless Seth has no meter, because he can just EX SPD you out of the safe jump. EX bingo DESTROYS Seth’s offense. Literally every mixup he can do except block is beaten by it. If you make a read on SPD, do a neutral jump combo and you basically win the match.

I’m starting to think that the Sagat matchup may be a 6-4 or 5.5-4.5 in his favor, it’s hard as fuck to get in past his fireballs and even when you get in nothing is guaranteed. This cunt can punish slides easily, punished blocked zonks and ruffians hard which are likely to occur when facing him and his TK and nj.hk usually beats anything you attempt to do anyway >.>

I don’t normally find Sagat too hard but I know what you mean. This is probably one of the match-ups that demands most patience imo. You know slide beats his TK, if you knock him down your cross up HP will make his TU whiff. I find that fw-MP is well useful in this match as the start-up will help to stuff his tiger shots if you are within range. I hate those Sagats that just throw the Tiger Shot then jump away and rinse and repeat - really if you get in you have to be able to capitalise on any mistakes.

Do you use EX-Russian to get in and get the UKD? This can help your cause if he’s Tiger Shot happy.

Getting past the tiger obstacle course isn’t too difficult if you’re patient and worm in on the ground, since most decent Sagats will try to fish for a jump so they can f.RH > ultra ftw. At mid distance, most Sagat players typically are pretty bad with their footsies (Cody has better ones anyways) and will usually panic tiger knee, which can be easily punished, though you have to wary of those who mash DP after you block one if the positioning didn’t put them at too much disadvantage. Against those who can actually utilize some footsies, walking back a little and then f.HKing to catch a whiffed normal is more useful than you’d think. Ultimately, the main focus of the match is to stay at almost close range where your normals will beat his and provoke him to do something stupid.

Does anyone do this: When I’m fishing for CH w/ s.HP to go for U2 after it, sometimes the s.HP would trade and I still press the buttons for the ultra (since I’m buffering) and it works :stuck_out_tongue: It’s very irritating for the opponent I believe. Looks great too! (P.S: I know that Sasaki/Momochi/Furansujin go for s.HP trade to c.HP so that means that U2 works too… but was just wondering if anyone uses it in a match :D!)

you gotta be fast with the ultra. if im fishing for a ch s.hp i will just cancel into ex rocks for easy hit confirm.

It’s about the same timing as getting a CH s.HP. I can do it regularly. I was also able to land it in losers semis in a local tournament here so I think it’s really a viable strategy ;).

So I am having trouble with deejay’s vortex can I just EX zonk knuckle out of it or would I just get blown up. An Also should I try and pressure him or just let Deejay come to me, because I have played both mostly its a 50/50 between getting beat or winning just barely any suggestions?

Play Deejay like you would Chun, very carefully. His tools for getting through projectiles (EX/LK Sobat/Slide) get beaten by well timed rocks, and matching Cody fireball for fireball won’t happen. Deejay’s vortex should be beaten by EX Zonk.

If he tries to jump in, HK Ruffian, B+MP, and S.HP will work so long as you know the right ranges.

Trying to go for mixups on wakeup is difficult, pretty much anything you could try will get blown up by EX upkicks.

Thanks for the Info. Well if you have anytime missing would you be able to run some sets with me. Mr. Wigglysan is my Xbox live tag, an on a side-not screw gen I always try and punish anything he does and it just gets stuffed I feel like I am at a losing battle everytime I am up against him.

I could, but I’m living in China now. I don’t think that would be beneficial to either one of us.

well grr to that heh no worries.

close or far st. mp?

Meant S.HP, my bad.
