"We finished practicing now?" Cody Match-up Thread

Hi everyone.

Sorry it’s been kind of long since I last updated but I’ve written up the Adon VS Cody matchup.

All what is written is from experience and has been tested 100%.

Pretty neat write-up against Adon, I agree with everything that is said. Zonk is of capital importance, shutting down his Jaguar Kick bullshit does a lot in this match. Be careful though of his Jaguar Tooth, if he mixes it up with the MK and you react as if it was the HK version, your Zonk might whiff and you can be in trouble. To add my 2 cents, Adon can use his good c.HK in footsies which has good range and beats Zonk to score a knockdown and apply pressure so you have to be on point with your low-blocking, but this can be said for all MUs of course especially for Cody.
Another quick tip : after a succesful grounded Crack Kick, if you jump right afterwards you get a setup similar to a back throw against shotos. Depending on the distance your Crack Kick hit him, you might cross him up, but your jump-in attack will lose to all his Rising Jaguars, and those can be baited with an empty jump. It is kind of a situational setup though, and obsolete in AE.

On another topic, I was getting overwhelmed with Guy’s offense, especially his Bunshin Flip pressure when up close and I found that cl.HK really shut him up good, mostly stuffing it clean and trading a few times. Once I established that he couldn’t apply infinite pressure with his Bunshins, the match became more of a zoning/footsie war.

Whiffing a Zonk when he fakes a HK Jaguar Tooth is actually okay in this matchup. His LK and MK versions have more recovery, so even if he makes Cody whiff there’s nothing he can do because you’ll recover in time anyway. Also you should rarely whiff a Zonk against his Jaguar Tooth because he has to be RIGHT on top of you before you release it.

Adon’s c.HK is very good but he would have to get around the Bad Stones to get in that range. The Adon will probably be more focused on getting inside than attempting to c.HK your Zonk, especially because he would have to anticipate it. Also a max range Zonk is completely safe against Adon.

If you empty jump after a back throw or CU you can block his Rising Jaguar upon landing.

The Guy and Adon matchups are the ones I know the most out of all matchups because my partner mained them both. I’m currently writing up the Cody VS Guy matchup which I think is 6-4 Cody. I’ll PM you or message here when I’ve posted it on the blog and I’ll also tell you how to beat Guy’s Bushin Flip.

I did some testing and after a back throw you can Safe jump Kick and still block Adon’s Rising jaguar. Pretty confident in this but I can retest.

You should retest it. Afair Adon gets up way earlier and he should even be able to punish your empty jump ins, let alone kick ones. (talkin about ssf4 here not ae).

Re-tested. backthrow is safe against Adon.

EDIT: OK so I tested over and over in training mode both by myself with recorded cpu, and with a friend and it seemed safe. I was just playing an adon and got EX-Rising jaguar-ed after a back throw so I duno.

Ill have to sift through all the information and pick important points since I can’t fit all that in. : D But really good stuff. good stuff.

@Ice_Rei: Yeah, I had good idea’s with the guy matchup posted some of the basic methods a while ago. But because of space restrictions I wanted to everything pretty straight and to the point with punishes and etc. But yeah pass some ideas and Ill post em on up.

It’s funny I play against alot of the characters really good players too. Just keep eventually getting too bust to update often as I should. : \

But VS any of the flip mixups, Cr.Mk is just way too amazing to neutralize those. I don’t think bushin grab will grab ruffian reversal against the flip will it?

Also, I’m gonna update the first post with Cody’s stuffs.

Oh, really looking forwad towards die Guy Guide (xD). My friend plays his Guy VERY well and it’s even between my Cody and his Guy. But sometimes my Cody has a hard time against him ^^

His different frame advantages on block are making me sick

But the matchup is ok…
I have problems against good Hondas who know what to do (scrubby random HP Headbut Hondas are free ^^) and Akuma

I had trouble with Honda before, but lately, I’ve been winning against some good ones by keeping them from me :

  • throw rocks, mix with fake ones
  • if they jump, AA them with RK (I don’t have reactions needed for ruffian)
  • if they headbutt, punish
  • if they try sumo slam, release Bingo (I keep it pressed the whole time)
  • if they try to get close by doing lp headbutt, release Bingo or pressure

When they do get close, I try using frame traps mixed with throws, or ex cu, when it seems they might try Ochio.

He never does HP HBs (can MP HBs be punished?)

The biggest problem is that I usually eat an EX Headbutt when I try to frame trap or throw >_>

MP HB is punishable, LP and EX only in corner.

Anyone got any good CH f. MP setups?

Do you AE guys feel that the matchup has changed much vs. Seth?
The thing that made this match so easy was the ability to stun with 1-2 big combos. Do you think his health/stun buff made it any more difficult to play this match?

Yes, yes it did. The mixups and resets are still there; The seths I played were either really really aggressive or really really turtle which sucks. I play fubarduck a lot who plays Seth/Yun in AE. It’s definitely harder to get that stun, but other than that the matchup is still the same.

sidenote: st.lp is the fucking anti-yun-divekick pressure. OMFG you have to see it to believe it. Just mash it when they try to get in with dive kicks. Though good players, like Hsien Chang, will see it and try to whiff punish. But that’s the thing! st.lp recovers too fast. TOO GODLIKE.

Oooh, nice to know  thx

I had some good success last night against dive kick pressure with the usual OS-tech-mp. Ill have to try mashing lp too heh.

Hello guys! I’m new to Cody. I mentioned this in another thread but I used to main Chun Li until now. Got a lot of info thanks to this thread (and the other ones out there).

I honestly haven’t read every single page of this thread so excuse me if this has been posted before.

One of my good friends is a great Gen player and I had a lot of experience fighting against him using Chun Li and I used to do well against him. When I switched to Cody, I really started having troubles against him because I have no idea how to beat his moves!!

Nothing was posted under the Gen match up so I started trying stuff in training mode and I’ll show you what I found.

c.MP/s.MK to hands are really great pokes with low risk high reward for Gen (Especially with super or FADC combos).

The best counter I found for c.MP is f+HK as you completely go above his hand and can hit him before he recovers (this is in SSF4 and NOT Arcade Edition because his c.MP is buffed and is really much much faster. Haven’t tested this out yet in AE).

For s.MK, you can use s.LK and you will usually be able to hit him on his s.MK startup.

Another annoying poke he has against Cody is c.HP. It counters most of cody’s normals and especially f+HK. The answer to this move is trying to anticipate it and use slide (c.MK) and it will hit him on his startup (Gen moves one leg a little bit forward so that’s why you can sometimes use the slide outside of it’s normal distance)

Gen’s LK Gekiro(His DP) is not a strong reversal but many Gens still use it. On his wake up, a meaty s.HP will beat it clean resulting in a CH. Also, a safe jump (j.HK) after back throw will also beat his LK gekiro clean (and if he uses EX version, you will still block it as its not 3f).

One (semi) safe jump I found against Gen (and many other chars that I will list below) is really useful after an untechable knockdown.

Try to end your combos with LK Ruffian kick. After it’s done, immediately s.LP and then neutral jump HP. If done correctly, it will beat Gen’s LK gekiro, and you will block the EX version. Here is a list of the chars which this works on:

Gen (LK/EX Gekiro reversals, Beat LK/Block EX)
Juri (EX Pinwheel, Block)
Honda (EX Headbutt, Block)
Rufus (EX Messiah, Block)
Dudley (Beats normal uppercut, loses to EX uppercut)
C.Viper (Block HP TK)
M.Bison (Block EX PC,SK,Headstomp)
Cammy (Loses to LK cannon spike, but block all others)
Cody (Block EX Bingo)
Guy (Beat LK MK HK Senpu, loses to EX)
Blanka (Beats Horizontal balls including EX, loses to EX up ball)
Vega (Beats all Scarlet Terror)
Balrog (Block all Headbutts)
T.Hawk (Beat normal DP, lose to EX DP)

Character’s that are not listed means this doesn’t work against them.

Another (semi) safe jump after Forward Throw is to wait a second then jump. It should work against most chars except chars with 3f reversals and a few chars. (The list that I have includes Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Guile,Dudley(EX), Deejay (EX), Dan… but I’m not 100% sure so if anyone tests this out please let me know your findings.)

Thats it for now! I’ll try to post anything new I find. If anyone has tips against Gen using Cody please let me know as I really need that!

Punish Drill with C.lk OS M.RK

Not sure if this was written or not, but cody can punish Rose’s drill with LK OS foward RK. after the drill, as long as cody is not pushed completely out of her reach, you can punish. Bait rose with J J CS CU light version, then frame trap with EX CU. In training mode I tried punishing with U2 after drill, but not sure if it’s 100%. Online I wouldn’t try. Better to bait her fireball with EX rocks into U2. Cody’s LK OS Foward RK is a great punish for cody in general. Cody’s Crouching LK reaches far, and in AE will be 3 frames. works well with Balrog as well.

^ speakin of that 3 frame cr. short and how it’s good against balrog, and prolly agaisnt alot of other characters, Cody made it pretty high on Kindevu’s tier list. What chu guys think about this?

he didn’t get any nerfs = he stays where he was, but the cast around him shifted (some up, bur more down). that’s the reason.
