"We finished practicing now?" Cody Match-up Thread

Good shit. I have literally about 3 games of experience in this matchup, and I was having a lot of trouble figuring out ways around the fireballs. To counter a Low Tiger with Zonk, you have to be too close for it be on reaction. The hittable box on Sagat’s outstretched arms are too low to be hit by Zonk from the (easy) distances you can hit other people, like Ryu. Combine that with being unable to Focus->Dash them safely, and I was getting destroyed. For what to buffer into c.MP (to counter hit High Tigers), try EX RK, that should be fast enough to combo from that distance, unless you’re even talking about a range further then that. I’ll check it out tomorrow.

But so what do you do about a Sagat that’s purely spamming Low Tigers? Ryu approach of patiently walk up -> block between each Low Tiger until they start to slow down fearing your jump?

the hardest thing for me is being patient bcuz i like to rush down so sagat has given me a tough time

Not that I’ve tried it, but with low tigers, would just trying to inch your way up and then using a well placed ex bingo/U2 be any good?

some tips

cody vs abel:

when fighting abel stay in range of abel and start pokeing him with a mixture of S.LK and S.MK if you see the right time go in for a crack kick (–>+HK)and lk or mk ruffian kick, If he jumps use S.HP as a anti air, if he crouches or focus attack come in with your overhead (–>+HP) keep an eye on his ultra gauge he will use this as soon he sees you left open after one of your attack so try and bait this super out by movement( <-- jiggling back and forth, this apply to both ultras) when he does uses super jump back and land a nice J.HK + C.HK for the ultra hurricane throw for his orignal ultra just jump back. or if your quick on the reflexes and is decent distance from abel (Half screen 5 steps away) you should be able to land a EX Crimnal Upper his ultra hurricane throw for his orignal ultra just jump oh yeah and don’t try to focus attack abel on wakeup for he will EX tornado hold you out of the focus and might turn the match around in his favor

Cody vs Dudley:
this is a easy matchup just crouch and layout C.Lp and C.mp as pokes, dudley’s feet is usually open for attack when he’s ducks back for his EX short swing blow or machine gun upper LK ruffian kick or dead end irony super when you see these special moves and keep an eye out for the gauge you don’t wanna be left open for any of his ultra’s

Cody Vs hakan: (anti air oil trap)
when fighting hakan with this ultra equipped jump and do combos against him keep an eye out on his ultra gauge when it is 50% full stay grounded and play in and out of the foot game range stuffing hakan with s.lk and s.mk if you predict that he will do any special moves grabs( mid aerial spin grab or the low slider grab) just crouch and wait for hakan recovery time to come then bust a combo or just sweep him then go back to playing in and out of the foot game range never C.Mk into hakan or else he grab you on your recovery frame

Cody Vs Adon:
you can easily punish adon’s jaguar kick with cody’s Crimnal Upper when timed correctly, if at the right distance away from adon you can also punish his jaguar kick with C.LP, in foot game range keep him back with S.lk and S.mk C.lk and block his ultra’s only thing adon really got on cody is quick recovery time and if he sees you Crimnal Upper he would jump then use the invulnablity frame from the jaguar flash to hop through and hit you on the head

Cody Vs rose:
play inside and out of the foot game range poking back rose with S.lk and/or S.mk
when inside the foot game range expect rose to do a soul flare (QCF+any kick button) --> + HK , soul spark , or slide you can avoid major damage by crouch blocking rose’s slide, soul spark and soul flare these moves have long recovery times so get a combo in or C.Hk , C.Mp and cody slide C.mk are good pokes to use against rose and if she jumps C.Hp , S.Hp or S.Hk to put here back.
C.Lp and C.Hp would be best used when you get corner by rose keep an eye out for rose’s ultra gauge and when you see 50% jump back and start throwing rocks if she excute her any of her ultra’s you might wanna ex those rock throws to stop soul balls from orbiting around her.

someone nominate this for an article

So there isn’t any answer for Guile?
Its a horrible match when you cant punish him with zonk, “safe” 214lp got destroyed by flash cake…
stones cant last forever when he EX sonik booms…

Dhalsim is hell.

Friday I get to confirm this or not since the best Dhalsim in the south is coming to play, but I was surprised at how well I take this match up so far

Using cr.MK under fireballs stuffs his Fireball -> Fierce shenigans

Using back MP did wonders as well when he jump, and HK Ruffian Kicks

I’ll be back with more info later this week

When I’m in close, I can deal the pain a-ok, but I just can’t seem to close in on the fucker.

What do y’all do when pressured without meter? From playing Sagat in SF4 since release I’m so used to having a ‘GTFO me’ move. Cody’s offense is amazing, but getting hang of his defensive shortcomings takes a bit of getting used to.

If you’re coming from Sagat you got a long and treacherous road ahead of you… Now you have to learn how to block

I’ve been liking c.mk and light ruffian kick to get out of precarious situations when I can. Otherwise I generally just try to guess correctly/throw in a well timed bingo punch…and then continue to zone. I never try to ‘hit it big’ when I’m waking up or when they’re holding frame advantage pretty well. Like you said, Cody has no gtfo move.

Bison, Akuma, (Dhalsim and Seth too perhaps) seems to be completely invulnerable to Cody on wakeup due to their teleport. I can’t seem to punish their teleport with even a safe jump into EX Ruffian Kick. They teleport too far away.

If anyone has any ideas on how to nail them during their teleport recovery please share.

PS: Guy is a bitch when he has EX meter. I have a theory that all Guy players are ex-Ruffus players.

A safe-jump with Ultra2 OS’d might work, it seems from the OptionSelect.com video that it does on Dhalsim’s teleport. Other than that I have no idea, maybe rocks ?

You can also hit sagat with cr.hp from even further away than cr.mp…however the timing is stricter (must be done much earlier…probably psych)

Ok SO lets Discuss the sagat matchup now since I see alot of sagat talk , so I can compile info? Then next Maybe Dudley?

My data gathered from playing Sagat, I only know one Sagat that I play with regularly and he’s fairly standard so I apologize in advance if this is “Lol duh, retard” info:

  • c.MK goes under high tiger shots. The sagat will catch on and use Low tiger shots. This is where it gets tricky. EX Ruff can go through these but you better time it well.
  • Don’t jump over low shots, if you must, do it sparringly. AA Uppercuts suck to get hit by.
  • Don’t ever mess up links when you’re in. He will capitalize on your mistakes by Uppercutting you to the other side of the screen and possibly take a chunk of your life with you.
  • Rocks can cancel high tiger shots, but I mean really, why get in a projectile fight with Sagat?
  • Another projectile note, Rocks have a weird arc so fierce rocks will whiff most of the time. It’s kind of hard to explain, but the rocks will cancel the fireball so long as the rock actually, y’know…touches it. Again, thank the weird arc for that.

vs guy
use mp and b.mp and st.f to keep bunshin flip at bay

use rocks at conservatively if he has ex

vs blanka
im not sure which ultra to use on blanka,he is so illusive that i rarely have a chance to use trial 24 on him
while ultra 2 has range, punishing blanka balls leads too a weak juggle which he can punish with ultra (so its a mixed bag, personally i use ultra II for a finish move and it keeps blanka from chipping you away towards the end)
use rocks to bait the slide which can be punished easily by ultra II and at some ranges with ultra I.
b.mp beats blankas meaty j.rh
blanka ball is almost unpunishable but on the other hand crouch light punch with the knife beat every non ex blanka ball

sounds good but i dont see dudley as a problem imo but every character is competitive now,i just feel he was way overated.sagat is definatly a problem though. the biggest problem being not able to safely focus tigershots.

Played a pretty solid Rose tonight. She didn’t miss a single combo, and linked her super off some very quick reaction hit confirms. (I don’t play Rose so I’m not sure how difficult they are to cancel, but no Rose’s have been this brutal with execution that I have played.)

I’m not really sure if I was playing the match-up properly, and people are still learning the Cody match up, so just like “everything” else in this thread, take it with a grain of salt. These will need much more testing before they can be considered truly accurate match-up strategies. So without further adieu, here is what I ended up doing to win:

Offense or Defense?

Spoiler

She is tough to get in on since she has great pokes, so don’t let her get the life lead, or she will most likely turtle you. You can battle her fireballs pretty easily, whatever you do, don’t get impatient, she is just waiting for you to jump. Make sure she is the one that comes to you.

Didn’t get to test out the Ruffian Kick trade with Soul Spiral, this Rose was patient, and didn’t throw out random/psychic soul spiral’s.

Frame Traps FTW

[details=Spoiler]When the battle gets close range, your best friend is Cody’s lovely frame traps. She needs to be in control of the poke fight to win, so she uses her pokes quite liberally. They have pretty good priority and are hard to punish, but they get stuffed in the frame traps quite easily. This is where I scored the majority of my damage.

Don’t attempt setting up frame traps unless she has come to you, and you are in a good mix up position to get a f.mp setup. F.mp is pretty quick, and descent priority, but it is easy to stuff when they expect it, and this can lead to big damage. Just mix up some over heads, slide kicks, frame traps, and her close range game is pretty much not too threatening.[/details]

I am pretty sure that you can cr. mk under her fireballs, I did it a few times, but I wasn’t trying it full screen. Honestly, this fight doesn’t even really require Cody to turtle, so if you want to have a little fun, go for it. But, if you turtle until she comes to you, the match will be much more in your favor, and the actual rushdown you do will feel much more rewarding when you see that your health is near full.

There are tons of little things I did to throw her off, but you guys can figure this stuff out on your own, these tools should help you get her in a position to experiment.

Hope this helped.
