"We finished practicing now?" Cody Match-up Thread

Here’s some punishing options I have been compiling against Dee-Jay, on block :
[]Sobat Kick
[
]LK
If close : c.MP xx CU, c.MP xx MK/HK Ruffian Kick, no U1 after FADC
If far it’s safe, there’s a distance where s.LP punishes it but from too far away I didn’t find anything.
[]MK / HK / EX
U2 on Reversal, doesn’t work if only the tip of DeeJay kick hits you
c.MP xx HK Ruffian only connects with the MK.Sobat, no U1 after FADC
c.LK xx HK Ruffian, no U1 after FADC
[
]Slide
If Close:
Ultra2
c.MP xx CU, c.MP xx MK Ruffian
c.HP xx CU, c.HP xx HK Ruffian FADC U1
If Far:
Ultra 2

c.MK
When close, c.LP and s.LP both connects. Safe if done further away.
This obviously isn’t an exhaustive list and I could be wrong about some of it but it seems U2 is quite effective to shut up some DeeJay’s ground options. An immediate use that come to mind is to bait an EX.Sobat by faking Rocks and punish with U2, but as the recovery on fake rocks is somewhat long and the EX.Sobat is really quick this might be difficult.

Two match-ups that I feel need to be explored are Cammy and Fei-Long. Moreso Cammy though. Instant dive-kicks + A REAL DP + frame traps = GG. At least in my experience. I think insight into both match-ups will be very benificial in the long run.

I don’t know shit about Fei-Long, but I can touch on Cammy.

 1. Punish blocked cannon drills with cr.LK x Fierce Criminal Upper (don’t get too flashy with the combo, more hits actually take away from damage on this one)
 2. Ruffian Kick owns all failed dragon-punch attempts for free.
 3. Do not jump, there’s no reason to open yourself to air-grabbing and dragon punches when you have insanely strong anti-air options.
 4. Careful about Bad Stone, Cannon Drill goes under that shit easily.

+1

Use fake bad stone a lot in this match. Cannon Drill is an easy punish and can be seen a mile away. I think there is a vid of me on the PS3 where i mp bad stone (blocked), fake badstone baited cannon spike and Ultra on reaction.

Zonk is good too in this one.

U1 hits a blocked cannon spike IIRC

Ok so let’s delve deeper into the matchup. What you guys have posted is good but fairly basic information.

If you block an instant cannon drill you can punish with U1? I’ll have to research.

I don’t think you can do this if she’s hitting them really close the ground. To my knowledge your cr. LK will be counter hit by another cannon drill xx 25% combo.

I am moreso interested in what you guys are doing when she’s right next to you. I have yet to extensively research this match with Cody but things weren’t going to well. Like once she catches you with that low forward, spriral arrow? Shiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeettttt. This situation isn’t nearly as difficult with Rufus who can divekick throw attempts or EX messiah but I found that EX Zonk knuckle can be easily baited and punished. Of course you’ll be able to catch someone with Zonk xx FADC xx U1 every once in a while but this isn’t enough to win consistently.

I suppose you would be forced to jump away to try and reset the situation.

To my knowledge, as long as they don’t just hit me with the tip of the cannon drill, I have always been able to get the c.LK x whatever combo to work. It comes to mind that if what I say IS true then c.LK x Medium Ruffian would be a great combo as well if you’re able to knock her into the corner. Someone please tell me if I’m off-base and all the Cammy’s I play against just suck and don’t know how to block for dick.

I don’t like hanging out right next to Cammy for certain but her low forward spiral arrow is entirely punishable since she has to 50/50 that iirc…and at that range when you block it you CAN punish that shit. I’m basically always trying to play footsies with Cammy. I’m going to try Mendes’ approach of using fake bad stone to bait bad spiral arrows some more. Because of this philosophy I take with her, the knife works out AWESOMELY. Holy shit, that knife increases your normal priority like whoah. Spamming jab for just a couple of seconds to bait out a sepcial and then punishing it hard, and then going back in with the knife is pure gold. I’m sorry if I don’t have really in depth strategies for her or if I’m wrong, I still have a lot to learn with Cody.

Nah man. I think simply discussing matchups more objectively will lead to stronger Cody players in the end. As you can see, I’m still learning the character myself.

Ok Updated front page a bit

just another thing to use vs bison matchup…

if he is continually using the lk to lk sk loop just do a ex CU after u block the sk immediately, it will hit their c lk

timing isnt that strict just hit the cu during the frames of the c lk

ill test this more thoroughly later with a fellow bison but it worked in training mode

also b+mp owns bison on…everything lol u can also just c mk his DRs and some jump ins but really…just us back and mp

seriously it kills everything he does

(I’m not a great player, and new to Cody, so take this with a grain of salt.)

Random note on Gief - seems like j.hp gives him huge problems. Seems to beat lariats clean, and my friend struggled to find a good normal aa for it.

I still have problems if I get knocked down - but getting them scared off lariat (using HK RK on the ground, as well) sets up a lot of stuff for me.

This really help me out. i was having a tough time with her.

just some fun stuff to try

whenever u land a zonk or a cu and ur opp is always quick standing them try throwing an ex rock almost immediately after u recover from either one of those moves and it will cross them up if theyre not paying attention…plus the rocks looks like they SHOULD miss but they dont…if u time it right (timing is REALLY strict) u get an unblockable

got the idea from the new combo video in that new info thread

heres how i did the timing after a CU, after uv recovered and u can press buttons wait 1/4th of a second then throw it

zonk wait until cody bring backs in his arm and is about to go into his neutral stance then throw em

u can just try LDD after these setups in hopes the stone hit em anyways and the ultra will connect and well if it doesnt u still get the chip damage unless they have a invincible reversal otherwise they have to block it all

sagat rapes me for free,if i fadc his fireball i eat another one and i cant get close enough to zonk it.anyone else having problems with this?

v Rufus

Its really rushdown or be rushed down. Horrible little match up!

 • Well timed AAs are vital
 • Messiah spam can be avoided with a well timed c.MK
 • Most of Codys pokes beat out Rufus’! s.MK can beat Rufus’ c.HP from close and a well timed c.HK can beat it from afar
 • Watch out for the sweep when throwing rocks for corner pressure.
 • LK Ruffian can be used for a rufus closing in with Galactic Tornado.

double post

slide high tigers, and you can actually cr.mp a high tiger from just about half screen away – i haven’t found anything that will combo from that far away, though, everything comes out too slow or doesnt reach, but it’s a good counter-poke if you’re in range :o

slide will beat st. rh…i dunno, overall, i have a decent time with sagat, dont find it too hard, just be patient.

Quick note on Rose: Rocks cannot be reflected nor can the knife. It will go right through reflect (unless the rose i was playing kept timing it wrong). Also ruffian kick will trade with soul spiral.

HK Ruffian Kick beats Vega’s Rolling Crystal Flash clean (for all those cMPxxRCF frame trappers out there)

I posted it earlier but I will confirm again: Rose cannot reflect rocks/knife.

not sure how everyone else plays cody vs ryu but heres how i proceed:

 • at the beginning of the round, pay attention to what he does. they’ll either start out with a fireball or jump in.

 • if he tries to go for a jump in you can hk ruffian kick, back+mp, down+hp (usually trades), standing hk, or even focus.

-if he goes for his fireball, i like to go for my rocks to match his. from here, pay attention what ryu will do as you will NOT win this fireball fight with him.

after matching his fireballs with rocks for a few duration, you can sorta “feel” what ryu will do next.

-if he goes for his fireball again, you can slide under his fireball and close in on him. from there you can bully him with your zonk knuckles, well spaced criminal upper strings, etc.

-you can even go for jump in against his badly placed/predictable fireballs and combo him for massive damage.

-if he tries jumping over your rocks, you can delay your rocks and he’ll get hit by it or trade at worst. of course if he gets too predictable with his jump ins you can anti air like normal.

i like having u2. with u2, ryu can’t fireball from half screen and blocked sweep from him = free ultra.

the biggest problem for cody is getting knocked down and rushed down from there. ex zonk can get him off of you but it can be hard to time due to it being a charge move. bad spray won’t work after being knocked down by his sweep and only can be used in circumstances where he can quick get up. its uses are limited but its still an option. just be wary of ryus throws, which u can d/b option select into ruffian kick or criminal upper. dashing forward works too if you manage to get up and go under his jump ins. last but not least, you can wake up u2. its fast enough to be used as an anti air but you might have trouble connecting the wrenches if done too early. done too late, the whole thing gets blocked.

ex ruffian kicks are fast, goes thru fireballs but not at the startup and hits low. this is great against ryu whos trying to create space walking back and forth and against mindless fireballs. might be fast enough to punish whiffed normals by him too.

this match is 5-5. cody controls this match until he gets rushed down.

to summarize this match up: throw some rocks and go from there.
