That was done for the “Tournament Battle” version of SSF2 that had 8 cabinets linked together, I believe.
Weird, I’m almost sure I wrote a reply before felineki’s post, must be the SRK monster.
Red Cyclone and me exchanged links.
Does anyone know if there’s a website with screen captured scenes of the Pocket Station game from SFZ3 for the PSX? Otherwise I’ll try to do it. Thanks!
Don’t know what the heck happened to the other pics I had of Crimson Tears SFZ/DS outfits, can’t find them anywhere… if I ever find them again I’ll post them up…
That’s nice. Now if only he’d update the site already.
Query: What’s the last word on the “Ken and Ryu were not originally part of SF3’s lineup” thing? I coulda sworn it was debunked as a rumour, but I’m not sure.
I don’t think there’s ever been anything officially said about that subject, but it could be evident from the fact Ryu and Ken share stages in NG, indicating a last minute decision to include them in the game. Yang shares his Hong Kong stage with Yun as well, but that probably doesn’t count for anything since Yang was sort of a hidden character.
I just remembered something. For the ST bonuses in CCC2, there’s a sketch of T.Hawk’s old design. Same size, same costume, but much uglier and has a spiked mohawk. Although looking back at the Plot Guide, this is probably what “Geronimo” was supposed to look like. If that is him, then Cap USA was actually right to say it was a bad stereotype of Native-Americans. He’s portrayed here like a monster.
Different from this one?
Thanks!
Is there already a list of things Capcom USA changed in all SF and FF games?
That’s no rumor; Noritaka Funamizu revealed that in an interview to Gamest, printed in the SF3 mook. They weren’t planned to appear because with the game called New Generation, the staff wanted all new characters, hence Alex became and remained the main character for the rest of the SF3 saga. Still as a safety net the staff considered keeping some old faces, they considered at least Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Guile, and Sagat are the names he told Gamest, but there could’ve been others due to ellipses in his speech printed. And Noritaka-san said if he remembered correctly that in the end, despite cries of “Without Chun Li it’s not SF!” only Ryu and Ken remained.
Let the Zero series coverage commence. First up are the installments Zero’s World, direct tidbits from Capcom found in SFZ ad pages at the end of five Gamest issues, also reprinted in AASFZ. These introduced Nash, Rose, Dan, Guy and bushinryu, and Sagat’s pre-SF1 history somewhat rewritten from what was told in HnN. These five installments are the predecessors for the words printed on the page Alpha’s World for those who have the Alpha player’s guide and would like to compare.
One note of correction, contrary to what the Alpha guide and what I’ve said before, the Bengus/CRMK sketch of Sagat with hair does not have him holding the face of Hibiki Gou. I was misled by the arrows pointing to pics in AASFZ. Gou is the guy held by Sagat in the Sagat-Adon-Gouki group pic with Adon wrapping bandages on his hand and a small silhouette of Gouki above Gou and between Adon & Sagat. You still never see his face. Before Nua Khan was introduced, Sagat with hair was most likely holding the face of some nameless challenger, as described below in vol. 4. Enjoy.
Zero’s World vol. 1- Nash
Before he was attached to his post in the American air force, in the university he was studying biology. Also, he was even a veteran of the Pan-American Martial Arts Tournament’s championship.
A cool guy who fits in with a bit of a snobbish expression. That’s Guile’s friend who’s named Nash but, is it really the same person?
Regarding that detail it’s not clear if there’s no development, his posted unit doesn’t seem to be that of the person known as Guile. For the latest struggle, what sort of connection will likely become obvious?
That’s for the hand of you yourself to desire verifying.
Zero’s World vol. 2- Rose
“Soul power” is, mental power brought out as a physical power. This ability can be applied to fighting techniques and, it can boost attacking power. Claimed to be a “ki”, this power is one kind.
Why did this seeming “power” appear to have become manipulated? For her there aren’t many words for it. According to information, she had studied how to use the “power” under a person called “master” for a period of several years.
For Rose, possessing “soul power”, is a kind of irresistably forced attribute she was awakened to. This power which flowed into enchanting human beings, could that really be likely restrainable?
“Soul power’s” possibilities are endless. That therefore becomes an invitation to major calamity should it be wrongly used. This situation, could now be kindled like that.
The moment she sensed the existence of “evil chi”, Rose assigned to herself, an intensely grave mission. "Confinement of misused power prodigals, to hold back before any calamity happens… If that could be done, I would be useless!"
Rose’s new fate likely begins as of here.
Zero’s World vol. 3- Guy
“Bushinryu ninjutsu”…that origin goes back from approximately 550 years ago (age of A.D. 1440).
A pair of multitudes was as the premise for the super combat style fighting techniques, during the age of civil war rear detachments of the great battles swept over and completely subdued, having performed secret maneuvers on a nationwide scale, and in records was being bequeathed. However, from the Meiji period extended into modern times led into the present, ninjutsu becomes unnecessary in the world. The once combat ninjutsu’s influence was lost as “bushinryu.” Ninjutsu changed into not too far from a form of “dance performance”, like traditional accomplishments in pieces having become the sights. But, with the distressful present situation, a man appeared wishing for rebirth of the true “bushinryu”. That was the 38th order legitimate successor Zeku…Guy’s master.
Zeku met before Guy, a swordlike discernment and a frankly hostile seemingly pervaded beast of a boy. Many people concerned with Guy wanted to stay away from him, only for Zeku, within his pupil was concealed a fighting stylist’s quality and, he wanted to see through the infinite possibilities. "In the case for this guy…bushinryu can be restored!"
Thus for Zeku, to the young man was entrusted the future of “bushinryu.”
…And so numerous years passed, for Guy continuing Zeku’s original training, he came to have received the name as “bushinryu’s” 39th order. Quite quickly Guy took it, that was none other than his own self’s ambition.
When will be the day of “true bushinryu’s” completion?
For that answer, it is within the restless struggle!
Zero’s World vol. 4- Sagat
Under the influence of brawling from the time he was young, his eyesight from one eye was mostly lost. Regrettably facing his own helplessness, having become motive power he stepped into the world of Muay Thai.
Thus for Sagat, a 15-year-old debut struggled several weeks into arriving at the champion’s seat. With a large build overwhelming others and a springing nature he boosted to the top.
That’s when the title defending battles began. The young genius fighting king was challenged by a nameless fighter. Having quickly seen through Sagat’s weak point, he inflicted dead spot fought attacks. Sometimes he would disperse penetrating punches exacted at aiming for the "eye."
Once the terror was brought back for Sagat, shifted to defensive mode he was being driven into a dilemma. Already at that moment, Sagat was getting left behind, victory was tenacious.
"Never ever again, will I lose…!"
Before his eyes was his urging opponent’s clincher knee kick. Sagat protected his eye held dear, firing a blow with the whole body. A terrible “ki” following about from the fists, a rising roar would pierce out!
Thus for Sagat, with one eye victories would be exchanged and the title of “emperor” earned.
After that, with the first crushing defeat received from the battle via Ryu, his heart would swing from a throne to trouble. In the fight this time, will Sagat’s “strongest” name likely gain a victory once again?
Zero’s World vol. 5- Dan
His name is Dan (Hibiki Dan).
Presently living in Hong Kong.
Once the young Muay Thai champion Sagat was challenged, by a regretted and torn apart fighting stylist while deprived of that one eye. That’s Dan’s father Gou (Hibiki Gou). After the battle with Sagat, before long Gou died.
For young Dan, the death of his father forced on him a hatred for Sagat.
For the sake of revenge he migrated to Japan to study fighting techniques, to continue with Master Gouken’s original training, bringing forth a malicious heart’s unrest and unreasonably indicative of it, he becomes excommunicated.
After that, Dan returned to Hong Kong, all the while continuing to train well his self-taught moves at combat levels. And so on Dan’s basis to acquire chance for retaliation, “Sagat defeated!!” was the so-called hearsay that flowed out. According to news, an unknown Oriental, is said to have held him down with one blow.
Seriously what was that guy?
Could such a guy become a hindrance…?
Dan hurriedly flew to Thailand, chasing after Sagat’s whereabouts.
Next time, Ryu. Thanks for reading minna-san. Long live the thread.
No, that’s the same pic in the ST bonuses. I’m surprised to see it here though.
vasili10:
Thanks. However, what I’m more concerned with is, was there ever a version of NG produced that didn’t have Ken and Ryu in it? I think that was what was debunked as rumour: Even though they weren’t originally going to be part of the line up, it looks like Capcom made the decision to include Ryu and Ken before the game was actually made. And hence, there was no fan backlash from fans about some early beta of NG for not having Ryu and Ken.
Go(u) Hibiki/Scan galore
But wait a minute that’s new. Are you saying the orange version of Dan (Dan with orange Gi) http://fightingstreet.com/pics/temp/various/hibiki01.jpg , known from Sagat’s SFZ sprite http://fightingstreet.com/pics/temp/various/hibiki02.jpg , and Sagat’s old SNK parody art
http://fightingstreet.com/folders/artworkfolder/artworkpics/sf_art/sfii_art/sfiiww_art/sfiiww_fbstageart/sfiifbs_sagat.jpg , is actually not Dan? It’s Go Hibiki? That doesn’t make any sence, then why is he a Muay Thai fighter here
http://fightingstreet.com/folders/artworkfolder/artworkpics/sf_art/sfzero_art/sfz1_art/sfz1_sketchart/sfz1_sketch_Sagat&Go.gif? We’ve already cleared up that he’s not the guy on the bottom of the first scan, because the pic doesn’t show Sagat’s eye bleeding, unlike the other pic.
Then Go(u) has three looks now, like Dan but orange, like Dan but green with Tengu mask and Muay Thai version.
Ultima:
You’re welcome. I haven’t come across anything saying for a beta NG without Ryu & Ken, but Noritaka-san did say they eventually decided to put in some old faces into the game. Now whether that decision came about through only the staff’s input, or beta versions with new characters only, or both, I don’t know, but I’ll look through the interview again and skim for Ryu + Ken mentioned anywhere else. For now I’m leaning toward the staff’s input only.

Nope, just in that Adon+Gouki+Sagat pic does AASFZ say in the caption that Sagat’s holding Gou. The SFZ sprite is Dan (with clog shoes and a uniquely colored gi in SFZ1 but him nonetheless) according to AASFZ, and the older SF2 pic isn’t Dan or Gou because although the pic led to Dan’s creation and the previous two pics, back then Sagat was holding a nameless unknown.
I know it doesn’t make sense but that’s what the caption says, that orange-gi blood-streaming arm guy that bald eye-patch Sagat holds is Gou. Still the sketch of bald patchless Sagat with a Muay Thai fighter at his feet best matches how AAC describes Gou to be, so I’m sure the sketch came later on, after the foursome pic.
SFZ1 was probably the most uncertain point for Capcom in terms of storyline, thus you wouldn’t always read quite the same thing for character backgrounds if you looked at one SFZ book and then another. Hence for the original SFZ cast, starting with Ryu, I’ll be revealing accounts as they were first drafted, along with rewrites that later sources such as AAC stand by.
Maybe it’s a mistake. Or they just weren’t sure who it is, the artist was drawing when AASFZ authors asked. It especially doesn’t make sence, because the orange nameless guy, from the old SFII drawing looks exactly like the one from the Adon/Gouki pic and Sagat already has the patch in both pics. Plus why would they make Dan orange in Sagat’s intro, if not to show that the guy from both pics is in fact Dan? Even the way he’s holding him is indicating it’s the same guy (Dan). Thanks for the info!
You’re welcome.
Maybe it’s also a mistake that AASFZ labeled the orange gi clog shoes sprite as Dan. Gamest didn’t make that claim in its arcade mook anyway. Another note is that the sprite has an orange gi, and Dan’s color selections didn’t include it when you play as him in SFZ1.
Right, that’s possible, too. But I’m sure they’re all meant to be the same person, be it Go or Dan.
Do you know what the shoes could mean? Is it a hint to Gouki (they wanted Dan to be Gouki’s student or son you said a while ago)? Or is it SNK related?
I think Dan doesn’t have the color, to show that he hasn’t met or lost against Sagat as you might think if you look at the old SFII pic. It was just fun and therefore the actual storyline/ingame Dan has a different (even more ridiculous) color.
It doesn’t make any sence that it’s (sprite) Go because Sagat would have just beaten Go in SFZ1, and if that was the case he would only show up when fighting as Dan and not the opposite, which does make sence, because there can’t be two Dan’s at the same time. So IF they are all the same character they’re most likely all Dan, but just like the Hugo and Juli/Hawk thing, Capcom didn’t really care much.
Just a little extra thing I was thinking about today…
Gills elements are Fire, Ice and Light, things that emerge from above or originate from above ground. Air God/Angel??
Uriens elements could be classified as below ground electromagnetism, metal, lava. See my last post about it if you want extra info. Earth God/Demon??
I was thinking of these things because basically Gods in many pantheons are brothers/sisters if they are of an opposing view. And Urien trying to overthrow Gill is in very similar in many religions to the dark god wanting to take the power of the light god. It would also explain the power differences, Lucifier who was an Archangel, trying to overthrow God himself because of jealousy?
So in Streetfighter canon, it could be interpreted that Gill is a genetically created Angel/Demon or God (Neon Genesis Evangelion??) And Urien is the mirror of him, since they both have similar movesets, but command opposing powers. This… as well as Twelve’s character design, the Illuminati, all makes me think that some of SF3 was inspired or ideas borrowed from by NGE. The Illuminati trying to accelerate biblical prophecies and such, by creating gods to fufill them.
Possibly.
I don’t know about the shoes. Dan as Gouki’s disgruntled student was mentioned by Piero in his Italian article The First Place which I brought up in the past, same page that the “early Dan” pic is seen. Maybe the shoes are about that, more likely than any SNK reference.
The orange gi sprite shows up only during Ryu vs. CPU Sagat, so even if it was Gou, you don’t see him if you get to Sagat playing as Dan.
Twelve’s design is mostly based on an alien from an episode of Ultra 7, but I always thought he did look sort of Eva-like… give him some brown skin, pop in a core under his sternum and a pair of green eyes and he’d pass as a pretty good naked Eva. And of course there’s his winpose where he does a frightingly accurate berserk Eva impersonation…
That’s what I meant, too.
I don’t know NGE, can you name it from zweifuss’ list?
http://www.newwavemugen.com/~zweifuss/twelve/twelve.htm
Thanks!
A little more support for no sans-Ryu+Ken NG beta; Gamest showed it’s first 2 shots ever of NG previewed at a 1996 game show, almost half a year prior to its arcade debut. One shot showed Alex from what looks like a closeup of one of his ending screens sitting over Tom maybe, and the other had Ken’s victory quote pose screen with Ryu defeated. I didn’t find anything more in the mook’s interview to point to such a beta, as I had expected.
Noritaka-san’s words about Ryu & Ken not being originally in the lineup I also found in AAC; still nothing about a beta.
