Warriors Fate: Street Fighter story thread, revived

This sucks. I got to Akuma in SI (who, as you know, Shingokusatsu’s Gill), beat Akuma, and I didn’t see Gill resurrect himself. All you see is Akuma lying on the ground throughout the credits, and then flashing blue at the end, indicating that he’s recovering. There’s no clue anywhere if Gill’s dead or not.

I trusted that whoever told me about Gill surviving the SGS was right, but word of mouth only goes so far… unless Capcom USA censored it to death as usual. Is there a difference in the Japanese version?

Oh yeah, and do character-specific win quotes in SF3 just come up randomly, or do they appear under certain conditions? I think some of them are a good way to tell how the characters compare to each other, provided they’re not just crude insults or obvious “what-if” results.

It’s no Capcom USA edit; in order to see Gill resurrect himself, you need to defeat Shin Gouki, not just Gouki.

I’m not quite sure yet about how and when character-specific quotes come up.

Yeah you need pretty much a perfect game, try and win any and all rounds with Super Arts and defeat Gouki both rounds without loosing - Gouki stands up, his hair turns white and then you face Shin Gouki for two rounds. After you beat Shin Gouki you see Gill’s ressurection regardless of who Gouki knocks out, he’ll always SGS the final boss for your character and sometimes it isn’t Gill. I think for Ryu his final boss is Ken for example. But for Alex his final boss is Gill and so on.

Quotes are random for the most part AFAIK, if you win a fight with a Super Art in the second round sometimes you get a win quote regarding that Super Art.

Super Street Fighter II pictures from 1993

Here are the first scans of the old Super Street Fighter II art, that vasili10 posted the translations for (The Daily Warriors http://shoryuken.com/forums/showthread.php?t=173&page=263 ).
They show the Street Fighters in their daily live.

Here’s a bonus Geronimo!

Still working on the character chart, so might as well bring out other stuff first. CFJ quotes batch:

Ryu to Ingrid

“I’m always at full capacity. There’s no need to be abundantly suspicious and such.”

Ingrid to Ryu

“You’re serious aren’t you. Really how many years since such a reminiscence of talent has come out.”

Vega to Demitri

“To behave courteously be agreeable, from this side I perceive you’re diminuitive.”

Demitri to Vega

“Incomplete evil destroys the body. Therefore you’re not among higher standards of existence…”

Vega to Jedah

“…is that all? Humph! Wouldn’t you be dejected if not for your influential mouth?!”

Jedah to Vega

“Now then, how far did we talk? This so-called (evil’s anti-ultimate being justice?) question wasn’t it?”

Anakaris to Chun Li

“Do you wish for tranquility-ility-ility? Then unto me subordinate-inate-inate.”

Chun Li to Anakaris

“Ah- how dumb… What trouble would an opponent without substance give me I wonder.”

Hauzer to Yun

“Gogogogogogogo…careless…gogogogogogogo. Gogogogogo…that over-immaturity…gogogogogo.”

Yun to Hauzer

“Hey…seems to be non-different species no other creatures. Everything is also too much.”

Urien to Demitri

“Puny! Abject! Unsightly! Obtaining devilish fellows and the like is insufficient!”

Demitri to Urien

“That’s it…and furthermore shut up. Yelling nonsense damages the mood.”

Chun-Li to Ingrid

“You don’t place a standard of victory in advance. No position for it.”

Ingrid to Chun Li

“At least with those kicks, the soles of my feet aren’t necessary.”

Leo to Mukuro

“You will die for your honor eh…then show that you will surmount the morale…!”

Mukuro to Leo

“Glory…is bound to decline.”

Karin to Guy

“To have already seen all your thrusted moves, to duplicate in tactless frankness…a good place for it is irrelevant.”

Guy to Karin

“Conceit transforms into pride died out…apply it diligently!”

Shin Gouki to Felicia

“Flawless!”

Gamest findings. First, I managed to find by accident scans from issue #16 which contain a SF1 development interview. (Yay! Now I don’t need to scour the auctions for that issue and wonder if it contained anything useful.) I checked to see if kyokushin (and thus shotokan) was mentioned anywhere, but didn’t find 'em. However, the interview did reveal something unique and unknown thus far: Mike’s fighting motives. He fought for his ill younger sister, so quoting the interviewees he’s actually a good guy after all. (Auugh, now I realize I should’ve tried to get that SF1 pamphlet when it was available aerialgroove; who knows what else would’ve been learned from it.)
And from #255 and sano’s efforts, the SF2 tournament as in SSF2X (not SF2, Dash, etc. or SSF2) and thus Revival happens in 1993 and after March 1; Cammy is stated to be 19 and Chun Li’s posted as 25. Other confirmations are forthcoming for the charts.

Wasn’t that pamphlet insanely expensive? Thanks for the Mike info. Here are some more scans:
http://fightingstreet.com/folders/artworkfolder/artworkpages/sf_art_pages/sfii_art_pages/ssfii_art_pages/ssfii_dailyart.html

Thanks for the quotes Vas! I’ll try to update the faq in the next few weeks.

You’re welcome aerialgroove & sano. Yeah the pamphlet ended up quite pricey but I didn’t even try to bid due to thinking that it would just reprint AAC’s entries for SF1’s cast simply because they show some pages of it in AAC. Eh, oh well, maybe someday at the Arcade Flyers Archive…

Guess I gotta cheat with the pause button again till I fight Shin Akuma!

All that aside, I think Yun might have lost to Ibuki in the SF3 tournament. When she beats Yang in NG, she says, “Didn’t I just beat your brother?”

This doesn’t mean Ibuki fought/beat Yang as well necessarily, but that quote makes her beating Yun look like a concrete event. Plus, those two didn’t accomplish anything while it’s likely Ibuki stuck around long enough to get the G File. So for Yun at least, the odds are against him.

If you want to cheat to beat Shin Gouki, access the special menu after you beat the game, Max out your Super Bar so it’s always full. And just use non stop supers against everybody. With Ryu I did it the non cheating way which was really hard but since I’ve playing with Ryu for so long I could hang in there 'till I got it done, but with Alex I super cheated! I’ve forgotten how you access the special menu, that secret should be up at Gamefaqs somewhere.

More scnas. http://fightingstreet.com/folders/artworkfolder/artworkpages/sf_art_pages/sfii_art_pages/ssfii_art_pages/ssfii_dailyart.html
The last ones tomorrow, the extra ones on Wednesday.

Kataklysmic: NG in English only. In Japanese Ibuki says, “Did I see you before?”, but these totally changed for 2nd Impact.

Another small note from the SF1 interview: SF1’s fighters from England indeed had their names come from golf. At first they were planned to be named Birdie and Bogey, but the latter after much laughter was named Eagle.

A theory about Kyokushinkai as Ryu & Ken’s original style in SF1:

Saiki first mentioned this, but like Gill’s organization known as the “Illuminati”, I have yet to see this explcitly written anywhere, but I feel I can piece together a reason why it came about, and yes this involves one of your SF rip-offs listed aerialgroove.

SF1 and SF2 found inspiration through several mangas according to Gamest’s SF2 pre-mook. One of them was Karate Baka Ichidai (The Age of Karate Idiots), whose protagonist was the Kyokushin karate legend Soeno Yoshiji, a fictional version of the real-life kyokushin practitioner of the same name. This karate stylist was a model for Ryu, but I’ve never read Capcom admitting this outright. Kyokushin’s arsenal includes punches, kicks, and blocks, much like Ryu & Ken’s basic moves in SF1.
The real Soeno Yoshiji eventually progressed from purely kyokushin into his own style which combined kyokushin moves with grappling from judo and some Muay Thai. He called this new school of karate Shidokan. If Capcom USA had said shidokan rather than shotokan for Ryu and Ken, which was formulated long before either shidokan or kyokushin, they would’ve been closer to the truth, for in SF2, Ryu & Ken now have grabs, throws, and close-up elbow & knee blows. Again Capcom Japan doesn’t give specific style names.

Just a theory based on facts, but nonetheless a justification for Saiki’s statement as well as a possible beginning for the transition to a toned-down ansatsuken, its roots no longer satsui no hadou (murderous surges), but instead kikouhou (the principle of spirit cultivation or meritous ki).

“If Capcom USA had said shidokan rather than shotokan for Ryu and Ken, which was formulated long before either shidokan or kyokushin, they would’ve been closer to the truth…”

You mean to say “formulated long before either shotokan or kyokushin…” - right?

So Birdie is named after… “Watch the Birdy!” in Golf, lol! What’s a Bogey?

Very interesting post BTW.

“Bogey” was the first stroke system, developed in England at the end of the 19th Century. The full history is given in Robert Browning’s History of Golf 1955.

More (quite interesting):
http://www.scottishgolfhistory.net/bogey_par.htm

I added more pics, same URL as the last times.

EDIT: Hey doesn’t Birdie sometimes say Boogie in the SFZ series?

Nope, what I said above is correct. The chronological order is Shotokan, Kyokushin, Shidokan. Kyokushin’s founder Oyama Masutatsu first studied under shotokan’s founder Funakoshi Ginchin before creating his own style, and Soeno Yoshiji under Oyama’s tutelage later blended kyokushin karate with Muay Thai and judo to form shidokan.
Hence I stand by my statement long ago that kyokushin is a harder-hitting derivative of shotokan.

A bogey in golf is also 1 over par.

Yeah it sounds like Birdie says “boogie”, but all texts say it’s “bull head”, although phonetically it might as well be “bull heed.” Heck to me it sounds like “boordie!”

To hell with Engrish. How hard is it to get some real English-speakers instead of trying to mimic it?

Ryu is up against Mega Man today in the Gamefaqs Character Battle Poll. Mega Man II is the reason I became a Capcom fanboy in the first place. Voted for Ryu still since he’s my favorite video game character. Even though Mega Man’s winning I feel like I can’t really lose today.

Wonder if Chun-Li is gonna beat Lara Croft, that one should be interesting…

It’s time. First a correction that probably mostly matters to me: Ojou-san’s not referred to in the Complete File as I previously thought, so that paragraph’s out of my summary and can be taken out of Gouken’s section in the guide. The note is about how Ken feels or at least used to feel about Ryu’s character, elaborated below. Anyway, presenting:

The Ultimate SF2 Character Relations Chart
-main charts from Gamest #61, the Complete File, the Fanbook, the SSF2X pre-mook’s poster, and Gamest #255 courtesy of sano, and entries from these sources will presented in chronological order (aka first ones from #61, last ones from #255, and last entries may override previous ones where applicable. Also first entries may never again appear due to no further expansion on Capcom’s part, but are still included for comprehensive purposes); dozens of other books pretty much repeat the info from the above
-reading will be in the following format: “A” points TO “B”, not FROM “B”, to minimize info repetiton; if no arrow head is seen, it’s treated below as a double-headed arrow

-printed notes on connections from the charts themselves will be in brackets[]; clarification notes added by me will be in parentheses() simply because I’ll have more, lol

Next time, SSF2X Revival character statements from the game’s Head-to-Head Strongest Manual. Enjoy and thanks for reading minna-san!

The president wanted Ryu to work for him?
Face Paint Rival, is that a joke?
Not in her eyes? What does that mean?
Thanks! Awesome!

My guess:
The explosion between Cammy and Chun-Li stands for Cammy taking her role as the female star in the game (tongue intro of SSFIIX).

Whoa wait a minute. Chun-Li (young beautiful girl) is a reason for Zangief to shave?

About Balrog and Chun-Li, in the Complete File they both stand in front of a mirror, maybe they did fight?
