Here’s what Capcom Classics Collection says about SF1. Nothing new, but oh well. They used all caps so I’ll do the same. At the very least it may point out that the Street Fighter Tournament is called just that, much like it is in Studio Udon’s comics.
YEAR: 1987
GENRE: FIGHTING
PLAYERS: 2 PLAYER COMPETITIVE
HARDWARE: JAMMA+
ORIGINAL SOUND: AMPLIFIED STEREO
THE ONE THAT STARTED IT ALL, STREET FIGHTER NEEDS LITTLE INTRODUCTION. RELEASED IN 1987, THIS WAS THE FIRST FIGHTING GAME EVER DEVELOPED BY CAPCOM. ALONG WITH ITS SEQUELS STREET FIGHTER II, THE STREET FIGHTER SERIES USHERED IN THE FIGHTING GAME GENRE AS WE KNOW IT TODAY, SPAWNING MANY GREAT CAPCOM COMPETITORS AS WELL.
IN THE ORIGINAL STREET FIGHTER THERE ARE ONLY 2 FIGHTERS TO CHOOSE FROM, RYU OR KEN. PLAYERS MUST COMPETE IN A MARTIAL ARTS TOURNAMENT BEING HELD BY THE TOWEREING MUAY THAI FIGHTER SAGAT, THE CURRENT CHAMPION (LATER IN THE SAGA THIS IS KNOWN AS THE FIRST STREET FIGHTER TOURNAMENT, BEST KNOWN FOR THE BATTLE IN WHICH RYU GAVE SAGAT A HUGE SCAR ON HIS CHEST). DEFEAT ALL OF THE COMPETITORS AND DEFEAT SAGAT, AND YOU WILL REIGN SUPREME AS THE BEST FIGHTER IN THE WORLD!
THERE ARE 3 PUNCH BOTTONS AND 3 KICK BUTTONS, EACH OF VARYING STRENGTH. RYU AND KEN ALSO HAVE 3 SECRET MOVES OF DEVASTATING POWER: THE HADOUKEN FIREBALL, THE DRAGON PUNCH, AND THE HURRICANE KICK, THOSE OF YOU FAMILIAR WITH THE STREET FIGHTER SERIES WILL STILL FIND THIS GAME A PARTICULAR CHALLENGE. THIS WAS THE FIRST OF THE FIGHTING GAMES AND MUCH REFINEMENT HAS BEEN MADE TO THE SYSTEM SINCE ITS INCEPTION: PERFORMING EVEN THE FAMILIAR HADOUKEN FIREBALL IN STREET FIGHTER IS NOT EASY TO DO.
LITTLE KNOWN FACT: IN THE ORIGINAL ARCADE MACHINE, INSTEAD OF 6 ATTACK BUTTONS, THERE WERE 2 BIG PNEUMATIC RUBBER BUTTONS! THE STRENGTH OF THE ATTACK WAS DETERMINED BY HOW HARD THE PLAYER HIT THE GIANT BUTTON. THESE WORKED ON HOSES OF AIR THAT WERE CONNECTED TO THE GAME BOARD. WHEN A PLAYER HIT THE BUTTON, A SENSOR DETERMINED HOW MUCH AND HOW FAST AIR WAS DISPLACED, AND TRANSLATED THAT INTO THE STRENGTH OF THE CHARACTERS ATTACK.
TiamatRoar - On that thread at gamefaqs in the Final Fight Streetwise PS2 section about Final Fight’s storyline you wondered why Maki was the only thng ressurected from Final Fight 2 and 3 when the rest of these games seems ignored by Capcom. Here’s my response I posted over there, well, just my guestimate -
I think Capcom resurrected Maki because Masahiko Nakahira included her in his Sakura Ganbaru! Manga giving her and Sakura a very intense fight. And of course, Capcom really likes/adopts lots of his stuff.
Also, after Maki appeared in his Sakura Ganbaru! Manga it influenced the Street Fighter Zero 3 Hong Kong comic and she appeared in that as well in lots of issues. So by the time CVS2 rolled out and Maki was included she had a good amount of exposure and people who didn’t play Final Fight 2 knew who she was.
Yea, I saw that. I wouldn’t worry too much about me missing gamefaqs posts on Streetwise. I’m monitoring that board like a hawk while the monitoring is good Gotta get any info I can while it’s available, after all.
I thought Ryu is officially stated to MAYBE be related to the main characters of Star Gladiator and Cyberbots (Hamato and Jin). Maybe that was just a lame excusion for the similarity and unoriginality of each main character in these games.
The following SNK titles are chronologically connected:
> Bakumatsu Roman Gekka no Kenshi series (Last Blade series)
> Ryuuko no Ken series (Art of Fighting series)
> Garou Densetsu series (Fatal Fury series)
> Fuu’un series [Fuu’un Mokushiroku and Fuu’un Super Tag Battle] (Savage Reign and Kizuna Encounter)
Okay, that was strange, couldn’t see Dash no Chris’ and aerialgroove’s posts for a moment there.
Dash no Chris: please email or PM me when you get a chance.
sano: from the choice of words in CCCR about SF1, I’m pretty sure “Street Fighter Tournament” is just a perspective term when looking back before SF2 since 2 was the one that really took off. If the events themselves are known by specific name to people in the SF universe, I feel the name’s most likely what AAC says: The World Fighting Championship, First, Second and so on.
Tiamat: after the debates with Olivier Hague at Gamefaqs, I realized another slight guide edit needed, one which many sites have incorrectly, and I should have caught it sooner: Sheng Long is Chinese for “rising dragon”, not “dragon punch.” It’s yet another support note for using Sheng Long being Capcom USA’s deliberate doing rather than their innocent mistranslation.
The Ryu/Jin Saotome maybe relationship thing came about because -
A. He looks like Ryu.
B. His father’s name is Ken, indicating that kind of maybe Ken and Ryu’s bloodlines intersected. Course a first name doesn’t mean anything but some people thought that it meant and/or was hinting at something.
C. Ryu appearing in Jin Saotome’s MVC1 ending made a lot of people think they were related.
But it’s a fan fiction theory, nothing official to back it up, much like the Ryu/Hayato thing. So really, the only linked games are the ones that TiamatRoar layed out.
I always found it strange how quickly Capcom forgot about Final Fight 3/Final Fight Tough, considering it was released around the same time as Alpha 1. Speaking of forgotten Final Fight 2/3 characters, I just noticed that Carlos from FF2 is on the cover of Capcom Design Works. He’s walking alongside Maki. Weird.
I saw someone post on a message board that Capcom hates Final Fight 2 and 3 because they were “Nintendo’s idea” (Nintendo asked Capcom to make them for the SNES or something, I guess). Dunno if that’s true or not, but that would explain why Capcom doesn’t seem to be bothering with them at all (with the exception of Maki, of which a likely reason is that whole manga thing).
The bulleted caption indicates that it’s an early drawing of Urien. Personally, I dig the one in the leisure suit and platform boots on the far right – man, I coulda been a contender.
ROFL. I like that version way more than the final product, to be honest. He had the 'fro and the badass tatoo on his chest and shit. But of course, those lazy retards at Capcom chose to make him a Gill clone instead.
Stupid question made all the more stupid by the fact that I’m pretty sure I asked this question before and thus might be repeating myself.
Was it ever stated that Guy wanted to participate in the first Street Fighter tournament but couldn’t because he had to go fight against Mad Gear in the events of Final Fight One, instead? (this statement assumedly would be a retcon and made after they retconned FF1’s date to take place in the same year as SF1)
Well, the fact that Bison survived getting completely expl0ded in Alpha 3, and Gill’s “Ressurrection” ability seem to show that, if not necesssarily immortal, their inner beings can survive significant punishment. I can’t recall if there are any official statements on the issue or not.
Interestingly enough, it’s implied by the special ending animation in Second Impact that Gill might even be “more immortal” than Bison, as he was able to resurrect himself after being Shungokusatsu’d by Akuma. Doubtful that that actually happened story-wise, but I think it serves as an interesting hint at the immense power Gill has.
Ah, okay. Thanks! I thought it was fan rumour but wasn’t sure.
M. Bison at least implicitly claims his soul is immortal, for what it’s worth. He tells Guy that he’s been known as many names throughout history and he tells Cammy or Vega (or both) that he’ll be back in a new body. In endings such as those two as well as Rose’s, he’s awfully confident and unworried about the fact that he’s about to explode. And All About Capcom does confirm that he possesses Rose in her SFA3 ending, so body transfer is definately not out of the question (even if that whole “scientists made him a new body for SF2” statement continues to elude us).
