> Hence on a list of preference I place Gamefan’s SF3 guide and others somewhere between the SFA and A2 guides on the high end, and Gamepro’s SSF2, SF2T, and especially SF2 guides on the low end.
Gonna have to disagree with this one. For the time, Gamepro’s first SF2 guide was better than anything else out there (mybe because it was the first US strategy guide of its type), though it’s mostly rubbish now. Their second guide, however, is the best US guide book that isn’t Versus’ A2 book. I dunno about the SSF2T book since I never got it, though I hear it was pretty good as well.
The SF3 guide, on the oher hand, was rubbishly written even when it first came out. It had some decent info in it, and the combos were legit because they were all swiped from probably a Gamest or a TZW tape or something, but it was so stupidly written that it made me blanch. It’s embarassing to read. I got it after the A2 guide, and it was inferior in every single way. The only reason I got it was for the artwork in the back, and even that wasn’t a lot compared to the A2 guide (though that may not have been Gamefan’s fault, since there probably wasn’t as much SF3 artwork as there was A2 artwork; but the A2 guide was realy huge, while the SF3 guide was not).
Also note that guy who was behind Gamepro’s SF2 guides - Matt “Slasher Quan” Taylor - is also the guy responsible for the A2 Versus Books guide. That’s why it’s so high quality - they guy and his crew learned from their previous efforts and continually improved on them.
Correct and also behind the SFA1 guide right? The SFA2 guide was so big because it also included all SFA1 art even the doodles and sketches (except for that early Dan sketch).

Per Psychochronic’s request I’m currently looking up all of the Midnight Bliss/Sabaki AKA Vampire Victim/Mummy Victim transformations in CFE along with their origins/inspirations for his faq (last link in my sig). I’m still having the darndest time figuring out what Zangief’s Midnight Bliss is in reference to, ditto for Mukuro (I know this is an Anime/Manga character for sure since I have a picture of someone cosplaying as this character, just don’t know which one). In the meantime I was able to track down Nool’s Midnight Bliss transformation/inspiration. It’s of Ritsuko from the Anime Kujibiki Unbalance. Kujibiki Unbalance is a fictional Anime watched by Anime characters in Geshiken. Then later Kujibiki Unbalance spun off to become it’s own 3 episode OVA series. Confused? Lol! Here’s Ritsuko in a swimsuit, what inspired Nool’s transformation.
And a few others for Rose and Nash were omitted from the SFA2 guide, found them in Gamest World thus far for Japanese sources. Darn Dan (or was this the pre-SnH Gouki?) sketch! Still don’t know where that’s from. Piero’s clamped shut about it.
This just in, should’ve had it ready for his birthday, but Ken being 3/4 Japanese, 1/4 American, his one quarter comes from his mother’s side, not his father’s. Ken’s mother’s father is American. Verified in both the Complete File and the Fanbook.
The only SFA1 guide I’ve ever seen was Prima’s. And CHRIST that book was awful. >:|
And the SFA2 book was so big because they dedicated some 8-10 page per character. At 256 pages, it’s still the largest english fighting game guide ever made. Hell, it was the biggest strategy guide, period, for a long time until Brady starting publishing huge 350+ page books for RPGs like FFX-2 and Star Ocean 3.
As an aside, though Slash Quan had nothing to do with it, the Versus Book’s FFVII guide is still the best RPG guide I’ve ever come across.
martinitolove:
I have the Saturn version of A3, and I have never seen the Honda vs. Sodom animation.
Also, those ones you mention for Cody vs. Cody, R.Mika vs. R.Mika, etc can happen in any Cody or Mika fight. You copy this from a PSX SFA3 FAQ where you only got those special animations when you played the same character vs. same character or what?
vasilli:
What? I thought that Ken’s father was half-american,half-JPN, and that’s where he got his 1/4 from? o_O
Well I guess I’ll just say it again, there is a SFA1 guide (not the awful one) and the SFA2 guide is so big because it includes all the SFA1 graphics (you can find them in AASFZ1).
I know, that’s what the plot guide currently says. However the Complete File and the Fanbook both say his mother was half and half. So unless a more recent official statement somewhere switched his parents’ backgrounds later on for some reason (maybe with the family name changed to Masters in the Zero series or something), it’s just another needed guide edit.
Yeah… It’s just that, as you mentioned, since his last name is Masters, it would make more sense for the US portion of his heritage to come from the father’s side.
Though it’s not canon, in SF2V, Ken’s father looks american, while his mom is definitely JPN. So it’s very posible they changed it around the Zero series and we just haven’t found a note of it yet.
Woot woot! Back from day 1 of the New York Comic con. Got to meet Udoneko, Ken Siu- Chong, Alvin Lee, Omar Dogan and SF Devotion! They signed lots of my books and I got a Chun-Li sketch from Omar Dogan and a Ryu sketch from Alvin Lee! They are all really nice guys, it was great meeting them in person!
I did get to talk to Ken Siu-Chong for a good while. I asked him when Ryu and Chun-Li are going to meet in the comic, I know they are not having babies in the comics but I just want them to meet, since they keep missing each other! Now Ryu is going to Hong Kong to meet Gen after Chun-Li just left! Arg! He said they will keep missing each other for now but they will meet some time during the tournament, and the events leading up to the SF2 tournament will start in issue 6. I asked him if he had any ideas for SF3 since not a lot of people have done stuff with it and he said he just had very vague ideas right now. Sfdevotion told Ken Ingrid’s story in SFA3 Max, he found it to be really amusing and laughed so I don’t expect Ingrid to show up in the comic and at the very least not with that storyline ha ha!
Sfdevotion did tell me that in Final Fight Streetwise Guy would be married to Rena(his exact words where Maki’s sister, he didn’t say Rena but I can’t imagine it being anyone other than Rena) so there is at least one bright spot in Guy’s storyline in FFS.
Dan has that move in Marval Vs Capcom 2, I believe. He signs the picture and then throws it at the foe. Doesn’t do much damage, though (obviously). It’s even one of Dan’s assists (and I think it’s the recommended one by the game, too).
Regarding Rena: It’s nice that Capcom remembered that Final Fight 2 ever existed.
Another clear-up thanks to another guide. AAC’s grammar wording makes sense now for me. Ken is stated to have witnessed Gouki and Gouken battle together twice before SF2, once when Gouken won, and once when Gouki won. And these both are flashbacks Ken has as he’s flying back to America after having fought Ryu and parting with the headband.
Got an Ingrid sketch today… will have some very minor Ingrid info when I’m not drunk… conventions is ruff for storyline threads like this, drank so much alcohol and killed so many brain cells so call this my foot note to post something “Sort of” good about Ingrid - BURP
