Special thanks to Richard! This has been floating around in the Fighting Game Discussion Boards, but in case anyone hasn’t seen it, here’s a Funamizu Interview!

Just read it, interesting. Is it supposed to be “Arika” instead of Akira?
I got a question for you guys because I don’t think I know anybody else to ask. That former SNK only artist that does a lot of Capcom art now (forgot the name), does he/she use photos of real people as templates for the faces and bodies? I think a lot of the characters of the Capcom vs SNK 2 art look the same.
Working on a Lawfirm, I’m being trained how to find out information on companies. My Law Firm has to find out info on Companies weither or not they’ve represented them in the past to avoid conflicts of interest. Here’s info I’ve gathered on Capcom of Japan. This is all information they have made available to the public, none of this is insider trading, so I won’t be sharing a cell with Martha Stewart anytime soon. This has nothing at all to do with story, but eh, won’t be the first time I commited that crime and it’s a good read all the same.
The main Company, Capcom Co., Ltd. located in Okashi-Japan has 1,206 employees. Capcom U.S.A., Inc. located in Sunnyvale, California has 100 employees. Capcom Entertainment, Inc., Capcom Digital Studios, Inc. and Capcom Coin-Op, Inc. are all located in Sunnyvale California. The number of Employees for these three divisions is not available to the public.
The President of Capcom Co., Ltd. (The Japanese one) is Hiroshi Tobisawa.
And a Business Description of Capcom Co., Ltd. -
“Capcom Co., Ltd., headquartered in Osaka, Japan, is primarily engaged in the planning, development and sale of software and the management of amusement arcades. The Company has four business segments: the Home Video Games segment, the Arcade Games segment, the Arcade Operations segment and the Other Business segment. The Arcade Games segment develops, manufactures and distributes game products for commercial customers and printed circuit boards. The Arcade Operations segment operates amusement facilities. The Company’s Other Business segment is involved in the movie business. The Capcom has a branch in Tokyo, a research development center in Osaka and a production facility in Mie. Capcom has 11 subsidiaries. For the three months ended 30 June 2004, Capcom Co., Ltd.'s revenues increased 78% to Y11.92B. The Company’s net income totaled Y509.0M vs. a net loss of Y367.OM. Revenues reflect excellent sales of games including Biohazard Out Break, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, and Rockman Zero 3. Net income benefited from favorable gross margin, Y67.0M gain from the sale investment securities and rise in currency exchange gains.”
What the numbers mean - Capcom had losses, but they aren’t doing that bad and have been doing very well.
Biohazard Outbreak is Resident Evil Outbreak, Capcom distributes Grand Theft Auto in Japan, and Rockman Zero 3 is Megaman Zero 3. GOOO ZERO AND 2D GAMES!
Yes, Nishitani Akira is a CEO of Arika, not Akira.
Your talking about Shinkiro. He’s a guy. Senra Kita and Kinu Nishimura are girls just so you know.
I have no idea weither or not he uses real people/models. Alex Ross does (Alex Ross draws lots of Comics. The most famous one is Kingdom Come. You may know him from all of the drawings in the beginning of the Sider-Man 2 Movie, he did those.) His style and Shinkiro’s is similar, but different. So, it’s possible Shinkiro does use models.
Though, it looks like for CFJ he’s either not using Models or if he is he’s using a different approach.
All artist use Models/face templates/photos to some degree, sometimes honing skills, sometimes adapting pictures/reference to their style. Even Schultz, the late Charlie Brown artist said it was important to draw from life! But since Alex Ross uses Models for EVERYTHING, getting them to wear costumes, pose, etc., it’s what Illustrators (Children Books) do, it takes a lot of time, so he can’t exactly bust out a comic every month. The extent Shinkiro uses Models is unknown, at least to me.
Hey I just realized, I didn’t really answer your question! Um, I dunno…
Mad props to Rid Hershel of MMCAFE! SF3 PS2 Images. I’ve seen all of these images before except for Gill vs. Alex. That’s new to me.

OK it’s been quiet today. Time to ramble…
I caught the ending of Filter on the Cable Channel G4 Tech TV(original Air Date was 1/14/04). Anyway, they had an Online vote to decide which Vidoe Game Girl kicks the most Ass. The head to head face off (they always do a head to head face off with the two top contendors) was between Samus and Chun-Li. Anyway, Chun-Li won! There were such statements made such as “Every Fighting Game Female is patterned after Chun-Li” by professionals in the Industry. The Games represented on screen for Chun-Li were SF EX3 (Pink Costume) and CVS2. Samus rolling dropping bomb routine and freeze rays are no match for the Chunster!
I’ve actually been watching a lot of G4 Tech TV. Originally, G4 and Tech TV were two different channels, but since they combined into one it’s almost like every show on the channel covers video games, and they are not 2D haters like almost every Magazine on the stands. Goodies -
The show Icons did a special on the History of SNK. SNK fans go nuts!
During Gephoria, the show’s Video game Awards, a Street Fighter II Arcade Machine was spotted in the Background! No awards for 2D Games, but oh well…
Adam Sessler, the hot of X-Play’s favorite Video Game is Ghosts and Goblins. Even though I hate the series (too much punishment not enough rewards) it’s great to know his favorite game is a Capcom one!
On X-Play they gave Megaman Anniversary Collection a 4 out of 5! But they gave KOF 2000/2001 a 3 out of 5, oooh…
Before they reviewed Crimson Tears on X-Play, they said Capcom was known for making great games such as Resident Evil, Viewtiful Joe and Street Fighter. Hey, at least people still remember Street Fighter…
So if you have Digital Cable, make sure you check out G4 Tech TV. In the meantime I’ll be waiting for either X-Play or any of their many Gaming Shows to review Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, which is like, the greatest Video Game ever created! What? I have no personal bias…
Yet very informative like always, thanks!
Breaking the aforementioned silence, here’s the answer to #1 in HnN, my favorite for obvious reasons. :bgrin:
Ryu’s headband is a furnished object that improves as its belt wears out. Truly the man isn’t he! Makes you cry doesn’t it!
However, with it confidence to be able comes from the stripe, such a rumor could fly in.
A red headband flying in the wind, this is the man’s style. Pronounced as Ryu’s trademark. Here is the unexpected backstory.
Ryu in the middle of training, disciplining day in and day out, there were pursuing eyes on his form. They were of Ryu’s master’s daughter.
Thickheaded Ryu, he didn’t understand the little girl’s feelings, and from the master’s daughter nothing until much later.
In time, someone attacked to kill as an enemy of the master, and the strength of the guy made Ryu want to set out on a trip.
The day of parting, for the first time Ryu knew her true feelings that were there.
It is said in pretext that the red headband she handed over as a token for those on a journey. With that, no doubt there was the confession with all her might.
That headband even for a moment won’t separate them, for brave fighter Ryu even today as his body is thrown into fields of carnage. It burns within, a dazzling wind blowing with her thoughts. It is felt, in the wind’s emptiness, always.
The story itself is null and void today, at least for the red headband, but it was here that I finally got concrete evidence of Ojou-san’s existence, and the feelings she displayed in the Fanbook’s manga story with Ryu.
And that Rinko is based on her only she gives him a wristband and not a headband. You know maybe Ojou-san is the woman that Ryu will have children with one day and Jin Kazama will be one of their descendents.
-sorry sano
vasili10 - That was one of my questions, right? Thanks!
aerialgroove - Like I said, don’t apologize to insane people! I know Ryu and Chun-Li will never happen, but you can blame Capcom of Japan for creating all Ryu and Chun-Li relationship fans. If you find any Ryu artwork and there’s a female there, it always happens to be Chun-Li. Why, in SF Eternal they show a Credit Card with the two together. There is a good amount of Ryu and Sakura Art however, she’s Chun-Li’s number one rival, but since we never see her with Ryu when she’s of legal age, it’s kind of forgotten. Shoot, if they wanted people to think otherwise, why didn’t they create more artwork with Ryu with Cammy, Ryu with Elena, Ryu with Ibuki, Ryu with Rose, etc. and artwork like this is virtually non existent. Or, just not create Ryu and Chun-Li Artwork in the first place. You don’t see Sega creating Artwork with Akira and Pai leaving only the Anime to insinuate anything. And Capcom of Japan thought at least 2 seconds worth of Ryu and Chun-Li’s first meeting to put her in her SF2 outfit (Ryu’s SF Zero 3 ending) so you can blame Capcom for my insanity. If they want to do Ryu and Ojou-san, bring on the Artwork to de-brainwash me! Well, I was very happy during my internet travels when I found a Japanese Website that was a Ryu/Chun-Li relationship Site. I didn’t feel as alone knowing someone somewhere in Japan felt the same…
I’d be almost shocked at this point if we ever saw Ojou-san resurface in a future SF Game. Even she did, Chun-Li would have to kick her Ass. Strongest Woman in the World after all, unless they decide to take that one back.
I don’t think Ryu will ever be shown hooking up with anyone. Once that happens, it’s pretty much the end of him traveling around the world and training all the time, and the end of the Street Fighter Series. He’ll just become another Ken. They should prolly go the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure route. It was long thought Kujo Jotaro had no use for women, they always threw themselves at him, he ignored them remaining a virgin, and next thing you know, years later he had a daughter. If they do this with Ryu and withhold the identity of the Mother as long as possible, that would be cool for us insane Ryu and Chun-Li relationship fans!
And for the most part, I don’t really want to see them hook up deep down. I’m a big fan of unrequited relationships that never happen. Um, I think you can find relationships like this in almost any Anime if you don’t know what I mean. I just don’t want the possibility removed seeing the two hook up with other. SNK is hella depressing when they skipped to the future and showed that Haohmaru and Charlotte never happen and Galford and Nakaruru never happen. And unlike Capcom’s Ryu and Chun-Li thingy, these are unrequited love relationships SNK actually played up. Now that’s just evil!
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection is one of EB’s Top Selling Games!
sano, I think Chun-Li’s #1 rival is not Sakura but Cammy, they just don’t seem to get a long very well.
Ryu doesn’t have to become another Ken, Oujou-san or whoever it is could just die when giving birth or something. The kid could get lost or stolen by some Ryu hating new SF bad guy (without wings and stuff) and trained to fight him one day. There are millions of possibilities without letting the story become boring.
I don’t get what you mean with Chun-Li kicking Oujou-san’s ass because she’s the strongest woman in the world. She’s not into Ryu and Oujou-san doesn’t have to be a fighter.
About the artwork, just check out the pic in your avatar, they don’t seem to hint to a relationship or anything.
Read your post about Dudley being based on Evander, they really have similar traits. I’ll add them to my list with the next update. If anybody ever has another good idea about who a character could be based on, let me know, please.
She wouldn’t kick Ojou-san’s Ass for Ryu, I don’t think anyone would fight for Ryu’s affections, but due to her popularity, she’d still be the strongest woman in the world. Ojou-san doesn’t have to be a fighter, but that would be kind of pointless. What other reason would she have for dissapearing after seeing Gouken’s death other than training? I honestly don’t think Ojou-san will resurface either way now that we have Sakura. And I find it suspect that current Capcom as it stands today that didn’t even bother to include the Official SF2 Revival Endings in SF Eternal and told Udon that there is no Street Fighter Continuity, each game exists within itself is gonna care/even realize Ojou-san’s “existence.” The last time Capcom cared about continuity was when SF2 revival and Final Fight One came out.
I told you I’m insane, but if Capcom didn’t want anyone to think thus it’s really easy, never create artwork with the two. There’s a big abundance of it, hell, there’s even a Pic from Akiman with Chun-Li in Ryu’s arms (even if that Artwork was for the RPG, it’s still in 2 Capcom Art Books, Illustrations and Eternal) My Avatar should never exist in the first place especially since it’s from Capcom. Oh, I’m sure not alone. A few years ago in PSM Magazine, when asked fans which 2 Video Game Characters should hook up, Ryu and Chun-Li were there, and I didn’t create the insane amount of Fan Art or Fan Fics for them being lovers. You don’t see anything like that for Akira and Pai from Virtua Fighter. Why? Because there’s virtually no Official Akira/Pai art from Sega to lead anyone’s imagination.
Thanks, Now stop arguing with crazy people! If I’ve been down with the Plot Guide this long and still foolishly hope there’s a chance for Ryu and Chun-Li despite all the evidence, leave me be. As Jack Nicholson would say, “I can’t handle the Truth!”
On that Akiman artwork he just holds her because she’s terrified like he would do for every other person, and all other Chun-Li+Ryu pics are either not romantic at all or not official.
You are the only person who does know the story of SF and wants to see them together, all those pages (Geocities etc) made by SF fans about Chun-Li and Ryu are made by people who know nearly nothing about the story and don’t know all the artwork, they just see the SFII characters, Ryu as the main character and Chun-Li as the only woman and that’s how it all started. For a long time there was no other possibility for a couple.
I think Ojou-san would be a great Dark Hadou character in SFIV. But yeah she’ll probably never come back.
Sadly, that’s usually the case. The reason Ryu & Chun Li are in so many pics together is only 'cuz they’re SF’s leading man and lady. Period. I don’t think it has anything to do w/ a romantic relationship between them (Not that I’m objecting to that). That’s how I see it, anyway. That’s why I never saw any possibilities of romance between them. Besides, like sano said, Capcom has never played up/hinted at a romance between the 2 and u have to do that in order for ppl to even consider a romantic relationship. In order for a Ryu/Chun-Li romance to become a possibility, there’s gotta be a platform of some kind.
Hai, you’re welcome and thanks for choosing my favorite one as your first choice!
Quite true. And speaking of pics of them together, I always liked the “eyes shot” of them originally from a pamphlet according to Eternal. But yeah the only time one happens to be in the other’s story is Ryu’s SFZ3 ending to my recollection. So from it and the plot guide we say that they’re at least friends if nothing more, but we don’t quite know how they came about to that point. Chance battles? Something more perhaps? No ties whatsoever between Ryu and Chun Li shown in any relation charts thus far.
Most definitely I doubt we’ll ever see Ojou-san actively resurface anywhere in the future. HnN said that it was originally hoped that she would have a more prominent role in the next game planned after SSF2X, back then it was SF3. Then the Zero series came along with Sakura, and finally 3S brought out Makoto, and most people would say with those addtions to the universe Ojou-san’s chances of prominence are slim to nill. But if there was to be a “next generation” canon game where Ryu finally marries and settles down, I’d agree that Ojou-san would most likely be the #1 candidate for spouse.
In the meantime, Gamest/Shinseisha has shown me that it is about the only source that unambiguously officially knows about Ojou-san besides Capcom, (probably Shogakukan too for the Fanbook’s manga) so I’m concentrating my search on those sources in hopes of finding her in spots that Saiki might not have known about.
Question to owners of Capcom Illustrations (Gamest Mook #17) and SF Eternal: How much SF art in Mook #17 is not in Eternal? Just curious as to whether or not consider getting Mook #17 sometime. Thanks minna san (everyone)! :wgrin:
Yes. But a beatdown by Q would be even better. They have a “connection”, right? Hopefully Capcom has the sense to keep that character around. Just think of all the ways they could involve Q in the story by retroactively changing or adding things (just like they normally do).
Guy’s disappearance? Q is responsible.
Gouken’s daughter’s disappearance? Q is responsible.
The reason Sagat and Ryu haven’t fought in forever? Q is responsible.
I see no limit to his potential as a plot device.
Of course I’m the only storyline person who wants to see them together. But it’s OK for me to think so, I feel. Even though like GD said, Ryu and Chun-Li are pictured together because they are leading man and lady, still. Where’s the official artwork that would make sense of Chun-Li and Guile or Chun-Li and Nash, people that work together? It doesn’t exist. Heck, we didn’t get a ‘maybe’ official drawing of Guile and Chun-Li drawing until Shinkiro did a SF Comic Cover. (I say ‘maybe’ official because it’s for the comic but Shinkiro did it, so the chances of that drawing showing up in a Art Book exist.) Capcom of Japan created us Ryu and Chun-Li fans, even if by mistake. And the fact that they thought enough of their friendship or whatever they thought to have Chun-Li appear in her SF2 outfit in Ryu’s memories in SFZ3 (the only ending where she is wearing her SF2 outfit. Not even if you beat the game with Chun-Li in her SF2 outfit will you see her wear that in her ending), they allow Masahiko Nakahira to toy with the unrequited love notion in his comics and Okamoto of Capcom of Japan Executive produced the SFZ Anime (more unrequited stuff there) shows they really don’t care if you see them as a future couple. Why? Because neither will ever be shown in a romantic relationship or have kids. You’re pretty much free to think of their fate however you wish.
And like I said, I really don’t want to see them get together in a Game because that means the end of the series. If you read my plot treatment of SF4 that I created a Link to earlier, in no way did I have them as a romantic couple or anything. It’s just my personal ‘ending’ for SF is all.
On the subject of art just to through this out there, in Japan Anime/Manga/Games very rarely do you see artwork of anybody acting romantically. Even the Gill/Kolin Pic never got past the sketch faze. There’s that Alex/Patricia drawing but you should know Alex is not boinking a minor (at least I hope…) Hell, I never even seen Chibi and Goku of Dragon Ball Z kiss and here they are banging kids out left and right. All Ryu and Chun-Li pics are just as ‘romantic’ as any other Boy/Girl couple/maybe future couple in Manga/Anime/Games. Just them standing there looking at the audience or something. They don’t even have official artwork of Ken and Eliza acting romantically.
Now, where did you hear about Jin Kazama related to Ryu? Do you mean June Lin Milliam of Star Gladiator? I’ve heard the Jin Saotome and Hayato related to Ryu theories, but not that one. I still kind of regard all that Future stuff as possible Alternate Reality Futures that may or may not happen. For example, with the fall of the Soviet Union, it doesn’t look like Strider’s Future will happen at all.
