If those years are correct, then I would say that RS does not take place within the SF universe; it’d be a little too far in the future for them to be connected, since Sakura is in high school for RS. The plot guide mentions a year 199X for RS at one point, so until now I thought there was a small possibility for coexistence of the two.
Sorry, I can’t see anyone in RS defeating Ryu because they go to school and have lives/jobs/etc. Ryu’s school was the Dojo. He learned everything from his master. For him Fighting is everything and there is not one character like this in RS. The people that really defeated Ryu or are rivals and not friendly rivals by SF3, or own him are -

- all people that live for fighting and nothing else. The only exception is Gill. But him being able to create and uncreate fire along with resurrecting and survive the Shun Goku Satsu put him above anyone in RS anyways.

As far as Kyo, it’s really hard to rate KOF Characters due to lack of information regarding what everybody did in the Tourneys. SNK works on Anime rules, so no matter who the villain is even if it is Satan Kyo can win because good triumphs over evil. So, he can probably beat any bad guys in RS. As far as the good guys, hard to say.
Actually, I think the RS defeating Ryu thingy is mostly tomahto tomayto thinking. Those who like RS will probably say that the RS crew can defeat Ryu, and those who don’t like RS that much’ll say there’s no fricking way Ryu can be defeated by the RS crew.
The only person in RS I could see defeating Ryu would be Demon Hyo, MAYBE Wild Daigo but that’s another story completely.
I like RS, not more than SF, but I still think Ryu owns all of them. Hey, I like SF more than KOF but I’m not gonna say Ryu can defeat Orochi or anything.

I just got the “perfect guide book” to SFZ1 by Shinseisha and the official SSFII guide book (the one with Ryu’s Hadoken intro from the game on the cover) and the first one is a usual solid guide book. The second is mainly a guide too, but also features interviews and some really nice 4 frame mangas (colored) that I haven’t seen before.
I also got the SFEX guide book by Versus Books and it has some (not all) artwork of the game, probably the best non Japanese source for SFEX1 art (way better than Capcom Design Works), and good tactics. It also mentions at the beginning that SFEX was first meant to be SFIII and has more to do with the previous SF games than the game that later was declared SFIII (I agree).
Is SFEX in Eternal Challenge, too? I forgot it but I think someone said it’s not in EC.
I also have all Cyberbots art and guide books now, so if you need info or artwork on Cyberbots, let me know.

Coolness. The second guide book I believe is another book from Shogakukan, same publisher as the Fanbook and came out just a little bit before the Fanbook did. I believe it also is exclusive to the Super Famicom release of SSFII. I was debating on whether to grab those two books or not. Could you show us the mangas it has, aerialgroove?
I had said that EC just lightly touches on the SFEX series.
I can’t really think of any Akiman arts in the WW series that haven’t shown up in at least one other place.
