Video Game General 7.0: Day Juan Ys: MoC June 9th & Wonderful 101 June 30th!

The dislike for RE3 is overblown. They are treating a perfectly fine middle road game like a dumpster fire. Fuck anybody who’d default is going to an extreme.

I’ll say this. On one hand, I think changing the story is generally how actual Remakes should go. It’s pretty boring honestly to go down the same road even with brand new gameplay. Going down a new path and subverting audience expectation I feel is for the best.

HOWEVER the downside is that ultimately it’ll affect gameplay as well. For all of us who dislike the FF7 story, I imagine most of us still want to do shit like fighting the WEAPONS with the all new gameplay style (which for all the people bitching about the Remake the one constant seems to be that everyone still considers the new gameplay to be excellent). The thing is, the WEAPONS came about because of the story going a certain way. Now if they change the story it still has to converge in a way that forces the WEAPONS to be unleashed onto the world. So instead of a story being updated completely to maybe better fit ideas that would’ve come over the last couple of decades, they’re more likely to still have to warp around the big moments of 25 years ago.

Thus the dilemma. Do you try to go for something completely new washing away the old but alienating all of the old fans, go for a beat by beat remake with barely anything new but making it so people who hated the old game have very little reason to go for the new one, or do you try to do a weird mishmash.

I don’t put it past Nomura to pull a Kingdom Hearts on Final Fantasy.

People do realize that the original FF7 was his script as well right? He was doing this shit LONG before KH was even a thought in a random person’s head.

It’s what makes the situation even funnier. Apparently a lot of supposed fans didn’t know Nomura or his work since then. :joy:

Nojima wrote FF7. Nomura was the character designer. Nomura needs his writing pen taken away.

Perhaps.
But TBH, at least from my part, i think that whatever change they make, it wouldnt be really a problem for me.
But knowing the fanatics, i am sure that whatever deviation that occurs from the original it will be scorned and frowned on, lol.

Nomura had scripting credits on FF7 as well.

Well, I think we can all agree Nomura need to take a step back. He complicated KH way more than it needed to be, it was just supposed to be you fucking around in Disney worlds

He thinks he’s Kojima but he’s really Vince Russo

The reality is though, this isn’t 100% his fault. It’s actually the fault of Square’s President at the time of KH1. KH1 was actually supposed to be much simpler than it ended up being because Nomura felt the need to cater to Disney fans who were used to that. President stepped in saying “No, people come to our games for more involved plotlines” and thus the avalanche of KH’s story came to fruition.

Nomura HAS good ideas, but it means nothing without a filter. KH1 had heavy restrictions placed on it. Once it proved successful the limiters were taken off. As you mentioned, pretty much exactly like Russo but absolutely no one bothers to keep a filter in place.

Hard disagree.

It’s one thing to expand the story, which I think that Remakes should strive to do, but the gameplay getting some changes is not only expected, it’s the whole point of a remake.

If you’re going to make a brand new story and change the gameplay, I’m sorry, but at that point you might as well make a whole new game and not piss people off.

Expanding the story doesn’t invalidate the original or the remake.

Yeah, because Kojima is a great writer.

Original MG all the way to MGS4 proves he can tell a complex, concise story with a clear ending. Especially MGS3, the story in that was phenomenal :man_shrugging:t5:

I dont know anything about FF but for game remakes imo

Significant Change:
Graphics
Gameplay
Music
controls

Minimum change:
Story/characters (Ideally expand on things not done in the original but try to not to do a drastic overhaul)

The Yakuza Kiwami games seem to follow my guidelines ( I never played regular Y1 and Y2 so I cant be exactly sure)

I kinda disagree.

MSG3 is fantastic, sure, no question about that. 4 was pretty cool too.

1 was just silly because “lol, genetics” and 2 was an incoherent clusterfuck of epic proportions.

And we’ve recently got to see Kojima without limiters in Death Stranding.
Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to see the trainwreck with my own eyes, but I’ll say, people did not take that one well.

Actually, a lot of the problems with KH is because there are a lot of filters in place.
You have clashing ideologies being applied at the same time with KH in general.
Where they have good ideas of where they want to go with the franchise, but at the same time the game is meant to be a kiddy friendly game, so they get tonned down when writting.

Also, Nomura is the scenario writter.
He comes with the plot line, scenarios and plot points that the game will delve in.
But he is not the writter of the dialogue, and over all story.

Those things are done by a different team.
The whole KH series is done by a comitee that involves both people from SE and Disney.
Nomura doesnt have free reing on what KH ends being.

If anything, KH is a “mess” because there is a lot of people involved on different aspects of the game.

The truth is that people like to atibute anything to him because he is the most visible guy on the projects.

And usually end blaming him for shit that is waaaaaaaaaaaay beyond his control and usually ends being fault of other people.
Like when they were blaming him for the failure of Versus XIII when in truth it was a whole problem of Square as a whole, trying to develope the game and the engine at the same time and placing him in charge of multiple projects at different levels.

Is like when people blame ono for everything wrong with SF.

If there’s one mutha fucker that sniffs their own farts harder than Kojima, it’s Nomura.

Reading more the Remake in the title is meta and shows what’s gonna happen in the game. Low key they should’ve called it Rebuild to prepare some buttholes and stem the flow of salt. :joy:

I say people are full of shit on that one.
Death Stranding is not for everyone, and that is the root of the whole problem with the game.
People let themselves to be swallowed on the hype train and then start blaming the game when it doesnt meet their own expectations specially when the game never painted itself in that regard.

I personally love Death Stranding and think that is a really nice game.
I wouldnt call it a master piece.
But is definitively way better than what many idiots paint it, specially those whoe give it a 0 simply because it wasnt Metal Gear.

And there is where I disagree. If you do the original story with small updates and expand upon it, then (assuming the expansion is actually done well) there’s almost zero reason to play the original game.

Let’s look at the original REmake for example. Is there absolutely ANY reason to go back to play the original RE outside of laughing at the old Voice Acting? The gameplay, vastly improved. Story, visual direction and voice acting, improved. New areas, new enemies.

It can be argued that, against my own ideals, it’s the pinnacle of a remake as it does absolutely everything to update in the original without losing the spirit of the original or the story at all (well other than helping Richard live a bit longer for that sweet Auto-Shotgun).

The main issue comes from when the original game’s biggest issue IS the story which is what many people (myself included) is the case with FF7.

2 was definitely out there, but it was pretty much a warped version of 2 (which was also the point). I saw zero issues with 1, it was fairly understandable and not too ridiculous (not counting Twin Snakes). I’ve never really heard anyone have much bad to say about 1, so this a first

As far as Death Stranding, haven’t played it. But I hear more ppl complained about the actual gameplay as opposed to the story
