Something Resident Evil related is getting teased
According to the press release, a new protagonist means new gameplay. Turn based will be what the mainline series will be with the new guy.
Turn-based Yakuza/RGG has people piiiiiiiised. Don’t blame them. I enjoy the brawler gameplay and it could’ve been HEAVILY expanded and iterated upon if they wanted to go ‘another direction’.
I’ll fuck with turn-based games if they are from Sega (or Octopath Traveler), but still. Day one for Y7, but if Y8 still does it, I’m out.
I’m a big fan of yakuza and turn based games so I’m in either way but I can understand if other people are disappointed.
English subbed trailer for Y7
Fuckin Zinogre! One of my favorite monsters. Holy shit that’s awesome. Praise be to the big ol’ shock pup.
Wonder if they’ll bring back the Stygian one.
Also just wanna add if yakuza 7 turns out well it could be a big thing for jrpgs in general there aren’t many where you play a grown ass man and 0 where your not throwing magic or fighting monsters and it’s set in a modern setting.
Other than Persona, DQ and fire emblem I don’t like turn based games anymore.
What more could they have done to iterate on the brawler gameplay after 7 main games and spin-offs? The devs likely wanted a radical change to freshen things up.
They could throw a bone to the ‘Yakuza is Shenmue but better !!1!’ crowd by using Shenmue’s method of training and upgrading moves. Introduce directional commands would be in the same boathouse here.
Worked with the environment a lot more, akin to Spike Out and Judgment with wall jumps.
Rework the lock-on system when switching enemies.
That’s just off the type of my head. Working in perfect frames for those that want to practice them would be cool too.
That’d be just a start. I like the gameplay as is, but only recently jumped back in a couple years ago.
These games are rare, especially ones with the budget and breadth of gameplay, but to go full on the other direction is too much especially in regards to turn-based on a system not the Switch.
It’ll be a long while and I’ll still have the old series to work through for my brawler Yakuza fix, but it’s still a bummer even if it’s new.
They are taking a huge gamble, more so then probably necessary by moving away from the franchise bread and butter in what is supposed to be a new mainline entry. I mean can you imagine a Mario Odyssey sequel where Mario doesn’t jump but instead has extension stilts to get to high places?
Just watched that Yakuza 7 gameplay. That actually seems really cool. I feel like they’ve managed to make the battles look surprisingly dynamic for a structure as rigid as turn based combat. And I do agree that we could use more turn based RPG’s like that which use the urban aesthetic.
Also really dig the protagonist’s design.
I hope they lean more into the things that turn-based tends to do better than real-time, which is mostly in terms of controlling multiple characters.
reaction of Shenmue 3 developer finding out Yakuza 7 is turn based
competition eliminated
LMAO so Sega actually managed to fuck yakuza up as well
No?

^ I still don’t know what the ‘goal’ of this game is but I’m still super interested in how this game comes together.
