When you go to work everyday and then go back home, it’s a metroidvania.

Lol, real talk. I’d like to get Bloodstained for Switch, but I also would rather have the 60 fps on PS4. I guess I gotta decide if it’s a game I’ll play on the couch more than on the go.

What platform are y’all getting it for? You think the framerate hit on the switch will be that noticeable?

I wish that was an option, but I don’t have a gaming rig. It’s not in my budget to get one anytime soon, either. I’ll probably get one someday, and I’ll be sure to hit Darksakul up for advice when I do, as I’m pretty clueless about how to even start a build.

I doubt that Bloodstained requires a lot.

Probably not, but I already have my PS4 and Switch, so I’ll definitely be grabbing it for one of them. Just trying to decide which one.

There aren’t going to be any online multiplayer aspects to it, right? I know my brother is getting it for Switch, so that could influence my decision.

I don’t think it will from a gameplay standpoint. It won’t feel quite as smooth but I doubt it will really matter, as mentioned Iga’s games tend to be slower and more…methodical? They aren’t the type of game where you need 60fps, it’s just nice to have. A QoL feature if you will.

I’m probably gonna get it for my Switch, I have found I enjoy Iga’s games the most when portable. I’ve finished SOTN on PSP many more times then I have on a console.

Yeah, portability for that game is definitely appealing.

You think SOTN will ever release on Switch?

I really don’t know, Konami unpredictable as fuck these days man.

Konami also hates making money from video games. They’d rather make it from pachinko machines and themed hotels.

Apologies for adding fuel… but this is where interpretations makes the term Metroidvania a mess.

There are some who do and some who don’t consider the Metroid games Metroidvania due to the lack of the RPG elements. Much like the most genres where one or two titles become the face (see more recent titles such the ā€˜ā€“Souls’ and ā€˜Uncharted’) the genres origin and how their successors run with it make many classifications imperfect.

Meanwhile on Konami fucking up, a shame they are making Contra look like trash. I get not giving Bomberman a big budget, that title doesn’t need it, but if you are doing Contra, make it look presentable or do it pure retro style. This and Battletoads makes me think when you hear about developers blocking out other media and potential competition they are serious, because I don’t get how in 2019 either of these were thought to be serviceable.

Metroidvania was never about RPG elements, just a means of character advancement.
Metroid had gears, weapons and upgrades.
SoTN and so on added RPG elements as the sprinkles on top of the sundae

Those upgrades and gears allow you to traverse areas that you could not before.

So are Zelda games Metroidvanias? What about Blood Omen 1 and the Soul Reaver games?

Is it really that complicated to make a distinction between Metroidvanias and platformers?

Zelda II for the NES was almost there.

They are not metroidvanias, they are castleroids.

I have always called the Metroid Prime games 1st person adventure games. Combat is a focal point but only really needed for specific progression parts.
