What’s funny to me is that’s not even what I was talking about. I was talking about the pre-loaded expectations that come with naming a genre after a specific thing. The Wolf Clone comment is a perfect example of why. We don’t call then Wolf/DOOM clones anymore because it’s reductive to the genre, boiling them down to all being like DOOM when that wasn’t true even when DOOM was the hot shit. Same for Wolfenstein 3D.

Then you get other issues like with how the term Souls-Like screwed Sekiro over pretty badly as everyone keeps comparing it to Souls games when it’s almost nothing like them at all and wasn’t trying to be like them either. Just has some director quirks and specific design he likes to use in his games like check point locations. Sekiro is not a souls game and comparing it to them does it a huge fucking disservice and fucks up people’s expectations of the game going into it. They expect a big exploration fulfilling adventure with tons of weapons and gear and lots of rpg skill stating, not an action game with light exploration elements and surface level rpg mechanics and 1 weapon and 0 gear.

Garbage terms imo. Not only are they pretty bad descriptors of genre, but they do harm to a lot of the product people use those terms on.

Is Axiom Verge a Metriodvania game?

Most definitely game took metroid as an inspiration

Well Axion Verge took inspiration from Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night and added it’s own spin.

So, Super Metroid is a Metroidvania game then?

What about the Prime games? Is it Metroidvania if it’s 3D?

I think my favorite Metroidvania game is Super Castlevania IV. The music, the graphics, the improved movement and whip mechanics, and just the overall tone of the game are all excellent. I fucking love that game.

It’s not a metroidvania game…

Lol, what?

Castlevania split into two main groups, IGA style with RPG elements and old style action platformers. Super Castlevania 4 is the old style.

When most people say castlevania is a metroidvania they are referring to the style IGA did from Symphony of the night onwards

So not all Castlevania games are Metroidcastlevania games?

mjlol

Dude Metroidvania games are games where you can backtrack a la metroid and you have RPG elements like leveling up, equipping items or buying stuff off an NPC like symphony of the night. The old snes games are just “platformers”

What about the original Metroid? That’s an old NES game. But you backtrack and power up and shit.

I think you’re just trolling but he means the older Castlevania games.
