For curiosities sake, what does Metroidvania mean to you?
Its like Fifa and 2k. 2K fifa styled shoot em up puzzle action adventure dance fighter.
Metroidvania (to me) just means that it is a side scroller in a somewhat large âworldâ where you will see things you canât access until later on when you unlock an ability that allows you to access it. And that they will play similarly to the two games gameplay wise that make up the name. And you can âlevel upâ yourself to upgrade and become more powerful in various ways.
It does not (again to me) mean that they are going to be as good as Metroid or Castlevania, or even trying to be a rip off of them.
Back in the day, âwolfenstein cloneâ was just a term for FPS. âWolfenstein cloneâ was a genre for a while too before they were known as FPS.
I hate the term metroidvania.
RSG3 and I had a long convo about this silly ass situation. Think we settled on 2D adventure being a better fit than just smashing two different game titles together.
Problem is that Metroidvania is sort of goofy in that it doesnât necessarily describe the genre exactly. Theyâre basically 2D open world games but so is LoZ in a lot of ways.
Oh well.
Like peeps called Celeste a metroidvania. Such a garbage term.
Guess the Shantae games are metroidvanias too?
But they had no problems conparing themsleves to Banjo Kazoie inntheir kicks starter
And they clearly regret doing so.
Metroid and castlevania are merely adventure games. The key is to explore and see everything the stage/world has and/or you return later to explore more and see what you might have missed or couldnât access before.
2d adventure or platformer fit better than metroidvania ever could.
Platformer tends to imply stages. Adventure sort of works because it doesnât necessarily need to be moving along a straight forward patth.
True, but Iâd rather leave adventure for the ones with actual combat. Some donât have any.
whoever calls Celeste a metroidvania is a cuck
I want a real metrovania, Nintendo and Konami to get together and make Metroid X Castlevania
Itâs like you didnât even read the article.
Adventure games donât need combat.
I read their kickstarter.
They made direct correlations on their kickstarter and kickstarter videos with Banjo.
some new metroivania footage
Loosely, yeah. Even though I called it a Metroidvania, Exploration based platformer is more accurate. Same goes with most âmetroidvaniasâ these days but the term is so ingrained into the gaming genre lexicon it just kinda stuck.
Imo anyways.
Iâve seen Shantae called a Metroidvania many times.
