Video Game General 6.4: New Halo? What else?

Soft rebooting is generally the smartest stance for fighters anyway as the cast is way more important to the game then it is to the narrative of that game.

SF tried removing its entire cast before, didn’t work to well…but you could argue it took Capcom forever to count to 3 which most fans prolly stopped caring by then

I don’t think I can count KoF14 as a soft reboot. More like the start of a new saga.

I still think SF3’s failure had more to do with 3D graphics being the new hotness, arcades dying outside of Japan, and the only home console port only being on Dreamcast. The game couldn’t run on anything else and the DC literally died in a year.

Or more like how only Ryu came back and by the time they added Ken and Akuma it was already too late

Ken was there from the start.

Yea Ken and Ryu are both in New Generation. Akuma was added in Second Impact and Chun Li in 3rd Strike.

I know I personally didn’t really get into SF3 due to arcades pretty much dying out. I wasn’t even really exposed to it very much because of that.

The SF3 cabinets were relatively rare compared to VS series and Alpha games here.

I saw NG for a month and 3S for a few months but they were removed quickly.
I never saw a 2I cab.

I’ve seen 2 3 New Generation cabs in my life.
One when I was staying in Port Orchard (beach town in Washington) the basement/game room had a bunch of arcade cabs. One of them was New Generation.

The second and third times were at my first evo. A bunch of us were walking on the strip and saw a Gameworks. We decided to dip in and they had a NG cab.

Then later we were walking around I want to say the Excalibur Casino/Hotel and they had a game room that had a NG cab.

I’ve never seen a 2i cab in my life though.

im not gonna lie i didn’t know street fighter 3 series existed until i started messing around with dreamcast emulation when i was in the 8th grade.

I thought I heard a story about how they only wanted to put in Ryu but then Ken came in a later revision or something…

ah, as I figured, the customization in Soul Calibur VI is basically the same thing but a bit better…which means all kinds of nasty characters I need to make right away… first one I made was a shit-creature of course…2nd character was simply a woman with no pants on and big exposed pussy lips. It’s hilarious to see what’s possible with these creation tools.

…if only the Miis could be so detailed… on that I just made 2 new ones— “Dung Juan” (couldn’t fit “DeMarco”; too many letters) and Jewcan Sam…haha, oh man… I amuse myself to no end with this shit.

When I first moved out I was living with a friend we got to talking about SF the second night and he asked if they ever made a third one.

I’d just set up my stuff and since I had the DC and both DI and Third Strike, showed them and they somewhat were wow’d and confused. Elena really threw them but grew on them. They really liked the parry as well.

This was back in 2000.

Story wise it is supposed to be one. Canon ending of XIII does the whole timey wimey thing and erases the events of the previous saga. Meanwhile, the end of XIV basically “unsnaps” everyone who’s died back to life.

It’s more of a reboot than SamSho, which is actually billed as one.

Wasn’t helped by the fact that New Generation is almost kusoge levels of busted.

Meanwhile, DC had the wrong version of 3S (revision B, no Urien unblockables and other questionable “balance” changes).

KOF “reboot” aka “Okay, shut the fuck up we get it, the New Faces Team will be back for XV! Now never ask us for anything again.”

They didn’t want any returning characters originally. From what I remember (digging deep here) the original location tests for New Generation lacked Ken and Ryu and people complained about no returning faces or play styles so they brought back Ken and Ryu. Kind of a vision of the future I guess tho a lot of SF3s cast is pretty beloved now to.

Think the lesson here is to not ditch your legacy whole sale.

MK without MK characters happened a lot in the 90’s, it’s called half of the clone fighters that were made at the time. With the other half being SF clones.

Personally, I would accept an MK game without MK characters, if they change some gameplay things and design elements that have lingered since 9.

nioh 2 looks pretty cool & fun
