I can understand his point. I recall Dragon Age: Inquisition getting a plethora of Game of The Year Awards despite being relatively lacklustre, unimaginative, and poorly designed. Nowadays it is completely forgotten and not even noteworthy in the discussion of action role-playing games, but because the competition was lacking it was somehow considered amazing at that point in time.
