Nintendo still in for the long haul, they’ve got their work cut out for them because 2015 is gonna be a rough year but at least they posted a profit. Now that I think about it 2015 is going to a gauntlet for everyone because of the sheer magnitude of games releasing in Q1/2 alone across US/JPN/EU, what the hell is the world ending next year or something?
Moving along
tl;dr- According to Capcom’s latest financial report (first half year and July~Spetember of 2014) they’re losing money again, they blame a general lack of interesting titles released during that time period. Apparently Monster Hunter will only pay the bills for so long until the Brightmen and Elecmen leave and the lights at Capcom HQ in Osaka turn off.
If anyone wants to read the long version open the spoiler.
[details=Spoiler]Capcom posted their financials as well, 45% drop in profits for the first half and a 53% drop in profits for July-September, they blame an overall lack of an eye-catching or interest generating title(s) released during that time period. If you take into consideration that Capcom released Monster Hunter 4 in the middle of September last year the drop in profits compared to last year kinda makes sense but that still doesn’t make up for the rest of the year. Of course they’re poised to post profits for their next financial quarter because Monster Hunter 4G just hit the ground running in Japan along with the new 3DS and Resident Evil Remake HD might make some money but it’ll do better in the US next year. Problem is while they make money off of Monhun it’s doesn’t keep them afloat all year round, which goes back to their original point that they’re losing money because of a “lack of eye-catching or interest generating titles/games/etc”.
So what’s they’re plan on remedying this? I know they’re building two new buildings, plan to hire up to a 100 new people a year, they opened up a mobile division not too long ago, released another SFIV revision (USFIV), making a new Ace Attorney, Deep Down is going through a trial & error state right now and Ono has another next-gen up his sleeve, and then there’s more Resident Evil remakes/spin-offs etc. While all this sounds good the first 3 points are going to take time and judging from their financial situation they can’t really put it off for much longer. I’m not one to tell people to do their job but Tsujimoto and son need to open up that playbook and rework that strategy of there’s fast if they expect any of those wacky aspirations of there’s to come to fruition.
IMO they should try taking tips from their peers like Bamco and Nintendo, they’re the most profitable and successful video game companies Japan that aren’t exclusive to cellphone games. Nintendo makes their money off of being an independent privately owned business (no outsiders) that makes their own games, systems, merchandise, etc and they also invest in other companies so they make occasionally make returns on their investments as well. Bandai and Namco success skyrocketed during the middle of last gen after they stopped outsourcing their games and started focusing on their monopoly in the arcade in Japan (Tekken and EXVS/FB/MB) their vast catalog of IP’s through Shonen Jump and Bandai in general (One Piece, Naruto, DBZ, and Gundam all under the same label), releasing more games on PC (Naruto, Dark Souls, etc) all the while focusing on middle tier development with all their console/hanheld games (Tales of, SAO, Mahouka, Gundam Breaker, SRW). Hell at this point they could take advice from Sega because unlike Capcom they’re more conservative and aren’t relying on just one or two IP’s just to get by.
Either way good luck in your future endeavors Capcom, your gonna need it.[/details]
