USF4 will be played on PS4s at Evo; may switch to 360 if still borked

I’m seeing players on twitter saying you can’t select plink on PS4 because the PS4 doesn’t have a select button ?
Anyone able to confirm this ?

This is true. The Select and Start buttons were replaced with Share and Options. Now yes, Options is basically the Start/Pause button, but hitting Share pauses the game and opens the gui to allow you to share a video or snapshot of the game. The only other available thing to click (that I wouldn’t call a button) is the “map” area on the pad above the PS button.

PS4 doesn’t have a select button. Options is the new Start, Share does other things.

Watch the PS4 version be trash, just like how PC gamers promised me the ultimate netcode experience on the “golden” Steam servers of legend. GFWLWASGODLIKEANDYESIUSETHEMINTHESAMESENTENCE#

Have to see it to believe it not getting my hopes up.

SF4 doesn’t use dedicated servers for gameplay, it’s peer to peer. Steam version is messed up because capcom created a bug (that doesn’t apply to 1v1 player lobbies for some reason) when porting and apparently never fixed it.

Pretty sure the PC version is fucked up because they created the PC version with GFWL in mind and Steam would require to rewrite the damn code all together to get it perfectly right. That doesn’t apply to the PS4 thing in any way, other than if they do a direct port from the PS3 version.

Not really surprised about this news. Kinda suspected it when they announced that SF4 was getting a PS4 port.

With SF5 on the way the player base was going to have to upgrade in a years or so time anyway. Hopefully, we will get some more stick options in the next few months. In addition, the community can start testing converters now and try to get something up and running.

I’m really expecting that the PS4 port is going to become the standard for however long that the SF4 series has left in the tournament community. (Possibly for a long time still if SF5 plays substantially different. I could see 4 and 5 played concurrently like 2 and 3 were back in the day if 5 has big changes)

Yeah i know.

Maybe it’s just my pessimism towards Capcom talking, sure it’s sounds nice and dandy when you rationalize it like that, but when it comes to Capcom they been knowing to defy logic with no logic, and can be pretty unpredictable at times. Good point though.

The driver for backwards compatability probably requires next to no work to impliment

I know that Skullgirls lead developer made one for ps4 skullgirls to allow ps3 sticks and openly said he’d let any dev use it. The only reason any game won’t use it, is because they are getting $$$ from fightstick companies

Nothing has been confirmed about the PS4 version so far. That said, the bright spot is that apparently, Sony themselves are handling the port.

Oh damn, if that’s true, SF4 might have a legit non laggy online on PS4. Bite me.

Gilley been holding out on us.

MikeZ made that driver because he’s a nice guy. The only other developer who would use it would do so because they’re nice guys. That’s the ONLY reason. And you’re kidding yourself if you think many developers will use it.

It has nothing to do with how much work it takes to implement. It has everything to do with how many devs will go out of their way to do something that is not required of them. And on this forum, people seem to think that this is some sort of required/expected action on the part of developers. It isn’t. As much as you all would like it to be, it isn’t, and won’t be.

I’d love as much as the rest of you if all developers used this driver. But I know they won’t, and it has nothing to do with getting “fightstick company money”. Seriously? “fightstick company money”?

i’ve bought like 15 sticks from the dc/ps1/ps2/ps3/360 era, including a naomi cab and a brand new ps4 stick for xrd, and i STILL think this is a ridiculous move.

ps3 sticks not working on ps4 is already absurdly anti-consumer. it’s just digital inputs over USB with literally no change in functionality. yeah, of course we had to buy new sticks in the old days, because the ports weren’t even physically compatible (but when they were, as in the case of the ps1->ps2, it worked fine). i had to move over from serial / gamepad port garbage on the PC side too - USB being backwards compatible for the lifetime of the standard was supposed to solve this.

and to top it off the ps4 version of the game isn’t even out yet - and will, at best, be the exact same frame-for-frame as the 360 port we’ve already been playing for the past 6 years and would have brought none of the headache and cost that this standard does.

as for having to buy a new stick for sfv - speak for yourself. many people were planning on just getting the PC version and calling it a day with their old sticks.

Good news. One advantage less for stick users over pad players.

funny you mention standards and DirectX/OpenGL…

NEWS FLASH: PS4 uses USB ports (same as PS3 which allowed Plug & Play), isn’t that standard enough? it’s not like they’re building the hardware almost from scratch like in the old days.
not to mention there are already drivers for compatibility with “old” peripherals. this is just an artificial limitation (like many others in the console realm), stop trying to rationalize their anti-consumer decisions.
they’re just maximizing profits.

Better than running with the delay on the PS3 port, because face it, there was no way any event on the Capcom Pro Tour would be allowed to run it on XBox 360 as soon as the PS4 port was available.

And you know what, most of us TOs aren’t complaining about it. Heck, for some of us, this kind of corporate support for our events is exactly what we’ve been wanting for a long time now. That’s why you’ll see some of us who are more than happy to run it on PS4. Heck, as I previously mentioned, some of us actually talking to Sony for sponsorships as soon as he heard down the line (a few months before the announcement in December) that there was going to be a PS4 port.

People would still have to buy for PS4, considering that it’s gonna be the console of choice for tournaments in the future.

EDIT:
Speaking of pad players, at least one has stated that he is going to EVO because it’s on PS4.

Some of your later points are much better but these ones are kind of… poor at best.

Genesis -> Saturn you gotta also account for the fact that there are 2 more buttons on the Saturn controller than the non-standard 6button Genesis controller. And these are actual gameplay buttons not like the PS4 share button that only matters for out of game aspects.

SNES -> N64 is a whole different beast. Way more buttons (7 face (including start) + 2 shoulder + zbutton vs 6 face (including start/select) + 2 shoulder) and had an analogue stick + dpad + the memory/rumble pack adapter stuff.

Classic Xbox -> 360 added a 2nd set of shoulder buttons.

360 -> X1 and PS3 - PS4 are pretty similar for basic gaming. The stuff added is all optional stuff like the motion tracker or share button on PS4, not stuff used in every game almost.

Now your point about intentional things like custom USB ports, and such are much better points showing the lack of true support for peripherals or their attempt to force 3rd party manufacturers to pay more or pay them specifically to create new peripherals. That’s a great point and great example of the situation. The complaining about these old consoles not being compatible with their previous incarnation comparison is bordering on a strawman argument and shouldn’t be used.

In the old days connectors were different shapes BECAUSE they didn’t want you to be able to use controllers between consoles. They COULD have all used the same standard if they wanted to – but they didn’t. That should tell you something.

360 and PS3 both use USB, but it’s a mistake to think it’s because they wanted to follow the USB standard. They used them simply because it was an off-the-shelf solution they could use without having to design their own controller interface. Just because they used USB doesn’t mean that they planned to follow a standard due to some altruistic motive. Don’t be blinded by the fact there is a USB-shaped cord on your controllers. This is still EXACTLY like the old days. Why this surprises anyone is beyond me.

PC controllers all use the same USB standard and stopped using game ports because PC is an open platform. It makes sense. PS and Xbox are NOT open. There’s no expectation for them to follow a universal standard.

Is it anti-consumer? Maybe. But people seem to think that the happy accident they got with the PS3 was some kind of god-given freedom that has been suddenly and unjustly taken away. It isn’t. It was a one-time miracle where people simply got LUCKY.

You can do whatever you want at home. This thread is people complaining about PS4 controllers for Evo. You can STILL use your old stick on PC. This isn’t changing at any time.

Of course it’s an artificial limitation. Of course it’s because Sony doesn’t want you to be able to use PS3 or 360 pads on a PS4. Of course it’s because they want money. Nowhere have I said that this is somehow GOOD. I’m just baffled by the entitled people acting like this was an unexpected development.

What I’m wondering is WHY ARE PEOPLE SURPRISED THEY NEED A NEW CONTROLLER? We got fools waltzing around just assuming they could keep using their PS3 and 360 sticks forever, when history has shown us that OF COURSE they would need a new one for a new console. No driver from MikeZ was ever going to change that. People were kidding themselves if they thought every developer would join hands, sing a song, and all implement MikeZ’s driver in all their games…

Fair point. But of course even if button counts were the same, they STILL would have done the same thing.

you don’t need a new controller, just get a ps360+. soft reset it after every match or in between rounds. $60

if you’re going to Evo you’re already spending money on airfare, hotel, etc. another $60 is hardly anything to get all worked up about. hell you could even sell it on trading post for $45 - 50 after evo.

don’t understand what all the crying is about.

this guy gets it.
