USF4 Ken Match-up Thread: Updating 1st Post Edition!

Corrected!!! My bad.

Thanks for the link.

Whats the point of adding the mk before jumping in after a Kara throw?

I like your new avatar Joutai .

Timing. It’s not automatic like Akuma’s in the corner but it probably helps (I’ve been on vacation even before AE came out so I can’t verify, but everyone is doing it so why not lol).

i’ve been (lazily) waiting for a good samaritan to compile a bunch of matchup specific information and put it into one thread for a while now and someone finally did it! thanks man you’re the best.

Ok Ken crew. I need help!!

I feel like I’m losing matches that I shouldn’t due to lack of match-up knowledge. What the heck should I be doing against Seth and Vega!!

As soon as I get knocked down by Seth, I feel like it’s round over. No matter what I do, Seth just seems to have endless choices to vortex me back in. Every uppercut Ken has gets beaten clean by Seth’s. Ken can’t backdash out of range to cause it to whiff either.

Now Vega. I think it’s just my lack of frame data knowledge, but I really don’t know when I have the advantage. His throw seems to have awesome range and his poke game is just brain dead nonsense mixed in with that stupid back kick and tick throws. And yet I still find it hard to get through his nonsense. I have no real problem with his wall dive moves, it’s the other stuff that annoys me.

Can someone help me out with these 2 match-ups?

Peace,

G.

Anybody follows the same rule honestly, “don’t get knocked down against seth”. I understand your woes G’, I really do. Anti-Air to keep him grounded and RTSD. I don’t actually have a set plan to beat this character. Just hope I can mix him up and win looool. Lame strategy but it’s Seth and he’s a douche. You gotta be risky too! You can block his mixup after dive kicks, just gotta watch. but then react when you feel like an SPD is coming. I guess the point I’m trying to make is when I play against Seth I throw caution to the wind and go for wreck less abandon…mostly midscreen(his mixup is strongest in the corner).

Vega…Hoo boy. I have this mix of lame him out and rush him down at times. It depends on how much they use that back flip bs which isn’t OS proof, OS tatsu that bs all day. His poke game will beat your pokes, so throw fireballs and build an obstacle course for him. He’s like cody in that his wake-up game is trash. that’s where you can really put an end to him.

In all honesty, I don’t anything I typed helped but I wish you luck man! Those are match-ups I still have trouble with myself!

im still having troule against seth cause wehni do the OS tatsu thats when he does teleport lol. but u2 is best from seth when he throw ex boom cause he isnt guile

vega use u2 cause if you block his sky high claw i believe u2 will get him. ill hit the lab and see

i have Poongko in my pool so if anyone has additional input on how to beat Seth, i would appreciate it!
i can’t/shouldn’t look past the other people in my pool but i also must be prepared to fight poongko.

Ouch!!

I had an idea for combos against Seth when I was getting beaten pretty badly and I think that ending tatsu combos with lk tatsu would put you in a stronger position (it sounds wierd, but I think it does) than any other tatsu.

Why? Because:

  1. I believe you can backdash every one of his DP’s after a lk tatsu (all other tatsu’s can be tagged by a DP if you backdash at the end.
  2. The spacing and -2 frame advantage make it the easiest tatsu to do a safe delayed crouch tech after.

It’s not much, but I got proper raped by the last Seth I played and I came up pretty empty on things I could have done better. Ken’s DP just loses straight out to all of Seth’s.

Also it seems that Seth’s dive kick recovers so quick that you can’t U2 it on reaction. Seth can safe jump Ken during wake-up all day and not really have to worry about being DP’ed or U2’ed at all…

Good luck!!!

Peace,

G.

ohh good idea on the lk.tatsu G77
i’m planning to outgamble poongko. whenever he puts me in a gamble situation im just going to EX srk. theres no point gambling with cr.tech (his spd will beat me) or fp.srk (his srk will beat mine). i realize that i probably have to make the better reads to beat poongko and since he’s seth, if i can make 1 good read per round then i have a good chance. any additional input would be appreciated

  • Ideal match-up play: play life lead and don’t let him get in. Since he has a Dive Kick and a good cross-up, he’ll most likely try to get in with a Jump-in first. AA it. Than he’ll be forced to Forward Dash or use Tandem Engine.
  • Right next to Seth when his feet is facing towards you: Neutral Jump makes his F. SRK/EX SRK/all SPD’s whiff.
  • All his SRK’s are True Safe Jumpable (5F start-up).
  • Tandem Engine (vacuum thingy) is punishable with a Forward Jump on reaction if you look for it (after C. MK?).
  • His longest low attack has the same range as Ken’s Sweep.
  • OS Sweep doesn’t work against his Back Dash.
  • OS EX Tatsu beats Back Dash and both behind teleports when Seth’s feet is facing towards you. It whiffs on back dash if his head is facing towards you.
  • After watching some of his vids, his favorite set-up seems to be cross-up > opponent blocks > Forward Jump out to bait reversals.

And G, I’ll get back to you with the Vega match-up after EVO.

Good luck guys!

Best of luck to you guys, I’ll make sure to rep Ken at EVO next year for sure.

yo nice thread im learning alot! screw you C.Viper!

viper isn’t really a hard matchup if your having trouble with bullshit kicks you can stuff them air to air with j.hk and ground ones can be easily focused.

I need some advice for a Ryu match up. A friend of mine is annoying the hell out of me by Focus attacking me as I jump in and doing Ultra 2 all the time. I should and will get a video of one of these matches so you can see what I mean. His Ryu is always jumping back and forth and it’s hard to zone him without him jumping in then throwing me.

The throws, right I should tech those but please help with that damn Focus attacks he does. He does it just outside of my jump so when I land it just catches me.

If someone focuses my jump ins it’s usually a free uppercut for me. Quick, invincible moves stop that BS anti-air focus real quick.

So I should jump in and mash out a DP when I see him focusing? His timing is amazing though. He has no combos, he never uses ultra 1 and he jumps constantly like a mentalist. Yet his PP is a solid 2500pp.

Yeah if he focuses absorbs your jump in just uppercut. I promise you you’ll see great results.

I’m sure I’ve been doing DP’s though otherwise I wouldn’t have found him annoying. If I can stop his focus game he’s got nothing else. It’s more annoying when I’m tring to mix him up, do combos and fadc and he scrub beats me with focus ultra 2 focus ultra 2 time and time again. More fool me for constantly falling for it.
