USF4 Ken Match-up Thread: Updating 1st Post Edition!

oh no not against grapplers…lk tatsu will get you spd…but it’s great mix-up for anyone without a command grab, and you can backdash out of a lot of situations where EX or RH will get u into trouble.

I think you can backdash from spd from mk. Tatsu though.

Well, I just went into training mode, recorded Ken doing jump in FP, cl.st.hk xx lk tatsu and then mashing on backdash.

I then set it to playback and tried to reversal SPD with Gief and Hawk. It whiffed every time (reversal sign WAS coming up too so it wasn’t me being too slow).

Gief’s ultra is 0 frame start up so that’s different anyway.

I probably need to do more tests, but it’s interesting never the less.

Peace,

G.

interesting find…so maybe it is only ultra that you can’t escape from then?

Would be nice if Ken had one tatsu where he could simply opt out of the mix-up and backdash away safely…

Can’t we just use mk tatsu which is even on block? But will normals beat out throw afterward considering they’re both 3 frame? And after ex tatsu I’ve found that ken can only backdash ibuki’s and feis dp :frowning: but imma hit the lab and see who else we can backdash.

Thats what i was thinkn i always use mk tatsu or ex tatsu. I dont understand why g77ssetup is working according to frames it shouldnt.but i always like to use all of kens tools and if thats a garanteed setup i wana use it.just didnt belive it since ots neg2 but good find if its tru.is is only the jumpin combo into lk tatsu that some how magically allows ken to bd?

Ok. I’ve just recreated it.

I recorded Ken doing jump in FP, cr.lk, cr.lp, cr.hp xx lk tatsu, then mashing backdash (no timing, just mashing).

I’m not brilliant with Gief, but I can do reversal SPD’s and they whiff every time.

If I do a naked lk tatsu, Ken gets grabbed so I can only assume that the cr.hp is putting Gief at just the right distance to make the lk tatsu hit on the second active frame of the second hit, making Ken only -1 instead of -2.

I need someone else to verify this before I get too excited about this, but it’s definitely repeatable as I have it working right now…

And on a side note, if you backdash after lk or mk tatsu enders, both of Gief’s lariats whiff as well. So if Gief has no Ultra, I’d argue that this is a favourable guessing game for Ken.

I need to double check, but I think Hawk’s DP’s all whiff too…

Peace,

G.

Interesting, I’ll give this a try as well. I’ll edit this post with findings in a few hours.

Edit: works, SPD and lariat whiff.

At 0:17 did I back dash a throw or did my opponent do it too late?

Yeah. You backdashed his SPD. But we already knew that EX tatsu is safe against SPD’s.

I’m not sure why you seem surprised…

Peace,

G.

Oh I didn’t know…I always used SRKs on them and decided to try this out <_<

No worries.

We had just been discussing why Ken’s lk tatsu (-2 on hit) seemed to be safe against SPD’s (2 frame start up) after certain combos when the frame data says it shouldn’t be.

MK, HK and EX tatsu can all avoid reversal SPD’s by backdashing or jumping.

MK and EX tatsu can avoid 1 frame reversal Ultra’s by backdashing or jumping.

After cr.lk, cr.lp, cr.hp xx LK tatsu, Ken can backdash and avoid reversal SPD’s, reversal lariats and many reversal DP’s.

If you want to avoid guessing games, lk tatsu may be the way to go…

Peace,

G.

Been having some trouble against my buddy’s Chun Li. He likes to play a keep away with her slow fireball and her amazing pokes (st.fp, st.mp, st.hk) and I have a hard time getting in. I get hit so many times with just her standing fierce punch right in my face. Her sweep also seems ridiculously fast and impossible to punish. Any help in this match up besides whats posted on the front page?

Try focusing thru her pokes so she has to respect your mid-range to close range game. Once you’re on top of chun li don’t let her escape no matter the cost. And just walk and block her until she doesn’t have any room to breathe, play the fireball game with her a bit and make her believe she can hasanshu over them and bait it out. If you anticipate sweep just focus absorb dash forward and fierce uppercut or 3frame normal to punish.

Hi guys,

Im having some trouble against Juri. I usually play against a friend and he has a very solid Juri. Basically when he doesnt have any meter Juri is more easy to deal with. I can rushdown her and try to get some knockdowns and meaty her all day on wake up. But when she has meter, her wake up and reversals are more dangerous (Ex Pinwheel Kick), must be respected, and sometimes is difficult to get close because she has good pokes, fast recovery fireball and exceptional anti-airs. So its been very hard to jump at her using normal moves or air tatsus.

I know that blocked EX Pinwheel Kick can be punished by Ultra 2, but sometimes it doesnt work. It seems like it depends on how many hits you blocked and how far Juri is. This move is giving me some trouble because sometimes it works as an AA, beats fierce SRK, and when it hits, ken is pushed far away. Very annoying.

Other things that Juri has and are very powerful is her corner control and her speed when the ultra 1 is activated. Once she takes you to the corner she can trap you all day and its very difficult to deal with. If her feng shui engine is activated no matter how hard you try to run, she always get close and find a way to use her fast overhead to chain combo you.

Unfortunately I couldnt find many matches of good players using ken and juri that I can watch and learn. I only know 1 good match. Dr Chaos vs Neo at Evo. And this match is on Super. Cant find anything about Ken and Juri on 2012. So how you guys deal with Juri? Any tips?

All of juris reversals can be throwed or ultrad on block if ur havin a hard time then go into training mode cuz I get it every time. And ya. Iam startin to think that maybe she might beat ken cuz we shoulnt be able to get in on her with her good poke and dumb fb game. But u should work ur way in wit footsies and well placed fb’s right outside of her poke range.

She can’t zone him and has a hard time with LP Hadoken because it travels so slow. It makes it hard for her to dive kick. Pinwheels = EX Tatsu. She also has to guess when you’re empty jumping or crossing up and will more often than not she will eat air tatsus and kara tatsus. This is a bad match for her because there is more guessing for her involved than there is for Ken.

She can’t punish Ken’s sweep it recovers too fast on block and whiff.
Spam LP SRK if she tries to build meter at full screen, you will build meter faster than her pressuring her to attack.
AA her with Down+HP or MP SRK
Mix up between j.HP and Cross up tatsu, she will have burn EX if she wants to guess which one you’re going to do.
She also has trouble with neutral jumping MK and MP
cr.MK and cr.MP stuffs alot of her wheels and normals

her low forward can punish our sweep but its tight. And towards the end u can see ken gettin zoned out by juris fb game and it worked well until neo got impatient or ken got a lucky tatsu. And focusing thrrough it doesn’t work well so ken has to rely on that air tatsu to get in or just very slowly walk her to the corner but by time I usually get in on a jusi like that a big chunk of my health is gone. And I shouldn’t just say normals cuz its basically her low foward that gives me trouble, its almost as fast as kens but its further and she can link a fb off it from any distance and if she has u2 that means you will be eatin low forward fb into u2 a lot so it seems like we would have to rely on step kick a lot more which won’t be scary until we have 2 bars. But ya once we get in 1 bait is full ultra. And this guy should have used u2 imo. And idk bout online but offline I get dive kicked on reaction to fb’s. And her u1 is very annoyin I try to be aggresive or run away and random ex tatsu lol.

Yeah Ultra2 for that match up. I don’t know why he used 1. The people I play the most use Juri, Guile, Makoto, Saukra, Rose and Deejay fairly… about 80% of my playtime is offline (I live with these people) also that Xbox account is not mine :stuck_out_tongue:

What I have found Juri has trouble with is mixups and Kara throws. Her dive kick recovery is pretty bad and you’re very likely to land ultra 2 on her as opposed to 1. Her cr.MK has a pretty big hurtbox btw

Hi guys can anyone give me some advice on anti airing goukens flip?

That armor move is hell annoying… Mp srk that hits once / air to air normal results in getting thrown into ultra. It also seems that if I try to hit the mp srk deep to get both hits I’m vulnerable to getting demon flip thrown. What are my options?
