USF4 Ken Match-up Thread: Updating 1st Post Edition!

I usually focus my game on throws vs elf. cause once he has meter he can only do one of two things. ex-runaway or ex-run&grab/throw which can be beaten with a jump back HK/HP. there is no real way to handle elf, he’s all of the place. you just gotta catch him slippin.

Can u1 be used tp autocorrect any of his options when ken is knockeddown? Also does u2 punish. Anything?

U2 punishes that moves when he bangs his chest against you. Quesadilla bomb.

I now u can punish his cross up splash wit cr.mk and it feels like u don’t even really need to time it so u2 should work and it was on the first page but I’ve never tried it and u could autocorrect u1 or u2 on his cross up splash, I would choose u2 tho because if u neutral jump his command grab u could punish wit somethin into u2, not sure if it still works in 2012 tho.

Can anyone give me some advice for the bison and claw matchup?

Specifically:

For bison, just found out that reversal U2/ex tatsu punishes ex psycho crusher on block if you’re sitting about c.lk,c.lp,c.lp,c.mk range!! But anyway:

  1. How do you gain any advantage on bison when he’s spamming devil reverse and building meter in the other side of the screen?
  2. After an lk scissors, can i throw out anything that would stuff an immediate lk scissors follow up? Other than shoryu?
  3. After getting knocked down, and bison goes for headstomp for chip i seem to be getting 50/50 success with mp. shoryu reversal. Anyone know why 50/50?

For claw:
1.How do you approach a claw that just sits at the edge of their c.lp range and edges you into the corner?
2. How do i punish/gain advantage from barcelona spam to build meter?

Bison

  1. walk forward he will corner himself or you can build meter yourself with lp srk
  2. st.mp/st.mk
3 its better to just block but the reason it 50/50’s might be spacing or he did a empty devil reverse

Claw

  1. be patient ex kara air tatsu out of corner jumpin when he has no down charge and dont try to challenge his c.mp with pokes of your own
  2. walk forward to gain space or lp srk to build meter yourself if hes doing it in the corner you should be able to u2 ex tatsu or fireball it

just my 2cents.

Pretty much have it set in my mind punishing Seth with anything ending in tatsu of any kind is in his favor. If someone can tell me otherwise please feel free, but the mix up we’re allowed after ex tatsu even was never meant to work against someone with an SPD and an SRK. Normals after ex tatsu lose to uppercut, blocking and spd. Uppercut after ex tatsu loses to Seth’s uppercut and blocking. Doing nothing after ex tatsu loses to SPD or allows Seth pressure. All options lead heavily in Seth’s favor so I’m never going to punish with tatsu unless I have a substantial life lead and can afford the risk or it’s going to kill.

Backdash beats spd and u could use ex tatsu but its much more high risk high reward but if u do go into another tatsu he he should be stunned.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t Seth’s, Gief’s and Hawk’s SPD’s a 3 frame start up with no invincibility?

All should get beat by a cr.lk after an ex tatsu.

I know it’s still an educated risk, but I think we need to get our facts down initially.

Played around online tonight:

st.HK is extremely effective against Balrog (if they are turtling, also FTK baits headbutts and offers plenty of time to block them), Ryu (He can’t cr.MK you, I got delicious counterhits), and Zangief (His SPD doesn’t reach)

Target Combo > HP Hadoken is safe on Block against Ryu, Guile and Blanka

Not in the corner though. And I thought Ryu can sweep punish but I’m not sure if he can midscreen.

Ok, I don’t know why, but Joutai had good reason to fear the SPD after ex tatsu.

I just checked the frame data and according to eventhubs, Zangief and Hawk’s SPD’s have 2 frame start up!! Seth’s is 3 frames so he “should” have to fear the cr.lk follow up.

But I don’t understand something.

Ken’s lk tatsu is -2 on hit, yet he can always backdash backwards to avoid Gief’s and Hawk’s SPD’s. This is what led me to believe the SPD’s had 3 frame start up.

Does this have implications for things like Ken’s ex tatsu? It’s -3 on block, but going on the SPD outcome, it could mean we are safe from all 3 frame attacks if we backdash on block.

Thoughts?

backdash loses to dp ; ;

Ya it does, there is no one way to beat all his options like we can against other chars u just have to guess better than the seth. That’s why I would only pull it out when I need the win or he has no bar or he’s just a predictable scrub.

Exactly what I was saying.

Prob because you get throw invul when back dashing (airborne frames or some mumbo jumbo like that I’m guessin). Explains why you can backdash to escape throws/spds but it’ll still lose to dp’s in the end.

Sometimes I just wish Ken had a better backdash. One that’s able to avoid reversal dp’s atleast. Too many times that tatsu combo almost kills but doesn’t and I get reversal dp’d to death cause either Kens dp straight out loses and/or i don’t have enough life left to eat the chip. It’s like I’m getting punished for going into my BnB =/

Interestingly enough, if you do lk tatsu, Seth’s light and fierce DP will whiff if performed as a reversal as you backdash. Seth has to switch to mp DP (as it has the best horizontal range seemingly)

I’m tired of Ken’s little nuances to be honest, but lk tatsu is pretty good on hit against most of the cast. EX put u right up in there face. That’s why I try to end everything in DP now. Even If I’m too far away, sometimes I’ll just get the c.mk and then do an OH. Getting that KD is what Ken is all about now, and his semi-zoning with normals and kicks and full-screen fb…

Are you sure ken can backdash after lk tatsu on hit? Cuz i thought anything -1 is unsafe against geifs ultra and spd.did they change geifs sod?

Maybe you can backdash cuz of range?can anyone clarify cuz this is bothering me now
