USF4 Ken Improvement Thread (+EVO Result)

Yeah its ridiculous how in the Ken thread people know he needs just a little help and they come in here bashing his fp.srk because they can’t find a way to punish 30 frames of recovery. Fucking ridiculous, scrubs I swear man.

I’m trying not to suggest something that sounds like Ryu (frame data, walk speed, SRK, knockdown fireballs) or ST Ken (knee bash in a game without variable throws, air throw or command kicks).

How about:
**LK tatsu whiff recovery **
Let LK tatsu on whiff have slightly faster recovery. Rather than matching Ryu on the low poke game, why not add into Ken’s mix-up game by giving him a lk tatsu whiff option to fly over low pokes for more mix-up opportunities.

EX Air Tatsu on-hit float
Kinda like 3S. Let EX air tatsu on hit float the airborne opponent rather than knockback, allowing a follow-up mp/fp SRK (1-hit) or a weak Ultra without needing a corner.

For real. People getting pissed off because we want the lowest-tiered shoto (minus Sakura and Dan…) to get the buffs he deserves, to match his play style.

People, you do realize that by saying you want Ken nerfed, you’re just shouting to us all, “I cannot beat Kens! Even though he’s the scrubber’s choice, I cannot punish him despite his massive disadvantages on whiff/block/whatever!”

Go storm the gates of the Ryu improvement thread, fellas. Oh wait, is there even a Ryu improvement thread…? No, seriously, I haven’t seen one. I mean I guess it could be out there, but… what the hell is there to improve on? Ken needs this stuff. EDIT: There IS one. It appears to be steadily turning into a mockery of itself. People who mainly use Ryu are even saying he needs nothing.

On the topic of krazy kicks: If they act like HDR’s krazy kicks, I think that would be just fine, and I would love it!

I agree ImagineVC. Ken’s SRK should at least be the same start-up frame as Ryu’s and Akuma’s.

And Aggroboy has a point. We need SOMETHING for lk tatsu. It’s nice to use over a downed charge character, as to mess up their charge. However, -9 on block and -5 on hit are just terrible… TERRIBLE!

THIS JUST IN: Scrub Kens seek to bolster their scrub char up to the standards of chars that are alternately perfect or broken because they’re scrub Kens, and thus too fucking retarded to see any other aspect of the game that doesn’t involve SRKs!

Not really. A lot of Kens just do j.MK when I’ll end up beating it with a LK Air Tatsu. Giving him his air throw from SFII/whatever wouldn’t be too bad of an idea and would give Ken somewhat of an edge on his already predictable air game.

I mean, at least Ryu will never get one.

Ken’s crazy kicks is another good option too. (I’m assuming we’re talking about the ones in CvS2 or am I thinking about the wrong thing?)

Yep. It’s not actually enough to stuff on the downward ark, let’s let useless people beat out more than half the cast by simply jumping in the air, which they’re probably already doing since that same amount of the roster doesn’t have an AA that even comes close to even Ken’s.

You know what version of Ken I loved from a thematic (not gameplay) standpoint? The Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter version. For anyone who doesn’t remember, Ken was changed from his XSF counterparts, and indeed from ALL past incarnations of Ken, in a BIG way.

  • Ken’s Hadoukens were ENORMOUS (as big as he was almost), but didn’t travel across the whole screen.
  • Ken’s Hurricane Kick, when done from the ground, traveled up at an angle, and if it hit he ended it with a kick that sent you plummeting.
  • Ken’s SRK became un-fuck-wittable by other SRKs; all of Ken’s were flaming, and they all outprioritized the likes of Ryu and Akuma.

Now, would this work in SF4, and is it too drastic a change?

  • Losing his usual fireball would kinda suck, but if he had other useful tools, a short range, large-area fireball might not be so bad.
  • The angled hurricane kick is something I’d rather see as an EX, or just not at all.
  • Ken’s SRKs could all have flames and all beat the respective strength DP put out by other DPers.

Dr. B’s hurricane kick actually causes real hurricanes.

If Ken got better at getting in, I wouldn’t mind having a glorified Gadoken. :stuck_out_tongue: Actually, if it recovered a little faster, it could be used as a mid range poke. Not a bad idea.

I wouldn’t want to lose my post EX tatsu mix ups. If roundhouse or forward tatsu get to be +1 or +2 on hit, then I could settle for the EX tatsu going upward… maybe… It might be jocking on Gouken’s pole a little bit…

Give Ken ryu’s lp srk, make it so kens mp srk doesn’t whiff the second hit as much (and weaken it), and strengthen his fp srk by like 20 or 30 damage. And maybe give him less recovery on his lk tatsu.

I pretty much agree with Chaos. My main concerns are the Fierce Shoryu, walking speed, and a slightly bigger frame advantage on Tatsus. Crazy kicks ( preferably the foward kick from 3S), Jab Shoryu swap, and increased partial Ultra damage would be great as well. We’ll see what happens though :wonder:
