So back in Vanilla, our entire scene still was on our honeymoon with the new MvC and one of our MvC2 heads was trying different characters and he went to pick Magneto.
A few minutes into his games, he looks back at me, then at everyone else slowly. He’s quite confused and he’s having trouble making the words he wants to say.
He squints his eyes at me and asks, “Where is it? Which button? Where’s Magneto’s jumping roundhouse?”
The room falls silent.
We all just look down or away and avoid eye contact with him for the rest of the night.
mugen/salty bets has a much wider appeal to people than competitive fighting games because there’s not much to understand, constant entertainment due to mystery characters and wacky occurrences/“comebacks” and things that beat the odds for a “hype” factor
basically, what used to make marvel 3 appealing for people who don’t know what’s happening/don’t care what’s happening to watch is the exact same thing as saltybets, except with an included betting system
you have to understand, people inherently like fighters as a concept- competitively however is a completely different beast entirely.
edit: add in less downtime/constant uptime, and no drama or human factor (this can work both ways but generally for keeping an audience base it’s toxic if it’s negative)
edit 2: however i feel it will not last over a month in terms of popularity. the appeal wears itself out quickly- which is something that the human factor/time factor of tournaments counteract.
think of the video game wrestling shit- it’s the same kinda deal basically.
Speaking of FGC stuff in Manhattan, The House of Crack, in coordination with Mashfest, will be hosting the first tournament in the Overdrive series next Tuesday night at Fashion 40 Lounge in Times Square (directly adjacent to Midtown Comics). Venue is $10, each game is $5 towards the pot for entry. Tournaments will be run for AE, Marvel, Injustice, and KOFXIII, all on 360. Signups will be starting at 7PM, tournament at 8PM. The venue is 21+, since the owner doesn’t want to risk his liquor license, so prepare accordingly. Hopefully something can be worked out in the future, though!
Turnout is looking to be pretty strong so far, so hopefully it’ll be a great warmup for Summer Jam and a good stable local for Tuesday nights!
Is there going to be a stream? The House of Crack gets so few viewers, hopefully something like this will get the name out there. The HoC deserves way more viewers than it gets.
Crack really is the best descriptor for Marvel. Extremely addictive, popular because it’s so much cheaper than other alternatives, destroyer of communities…
