Umehara is considering Gouki as his new main

I still think Akuma is better than Evil Ryu but you do have a valid point, Mr. Naps probably has one of the best E.Ryu’s in the world and plays so sick with E.Ryu, I can’t imagine what Daigo would do with him lol.

Well that’s pretty much consensus in AE. In v2012 it has to be seen.

But the thing is, you can’t really see how good a character is if an elite player doesn’t pick him. Sure, if they do NOT pick him there might be a reason, but v2012 E.Ryu shouldn’t be that bad not to deserve a try. Actually lots of people are intrigued by his potential, and his buffs were great.

I mean, people are like “Akuma is so strong”, but strip him of Tokido and see what results he racks up at elite level. Still better than, say, half of the cast, but not as dominant as Murderface makes him look.

Rufus says hi

you know i was wrong in the way i responded to you. i just blew up over one little thing in your post. i remember being in other character threads a while back before AE came out and people were scared that their main was going to be too good or whatever and that there was going to be a wave of bandwagon riders and stuff like that. akuma in OG sf4 was such a fun overpowered character, especially with his RH combos and loops and there were a ton of akuma users. but you’re right, he’s not as popular anymore with the pros since capcom castrated him. i apologize for blowing up like that and causing people to get mad.

Seth says hi. No-one moaned about Seth when OnlineTony and Hiropon used him, but Poongko comes along and he’s the most broken shit ever…lol.

I think that’s just because they weren’t as strong as him, or at least he could adapt way better to the changes to the character.

Kind of unrelated, but we got 1 Akuma and 0 Seth at SBO. It’s a very sad day. :expressionless:

A few scattered points…

  1. If Daigo does end up maining Akuma, I don’t care at all how average or even top/“name” players react. If more people play Akuma, fine. I enjoy watching Akuma aside from the fact that he’s my main and I enjoy playing against him, so I just don’t care at all.

  2. That said, I am EXTREMELY excited about the possibility of watching Daigo’s Akuma if he really puts in the work with him. I think he could do very well with him… Akuma, like Ryu (although in a different way), is very well-rounded (except for his health of course), and Daigo can use his zoning, his “psychic” abilities, etc just like he did with Ryu. Imagine Daigo winning big tournament games with psychic demons… How sick would that be?

  3. It honestly does make me feel better about Akuma’s possible nerfs if Daigo is considering switching to him.

  4. Tokido’s Akuma is obviously amazing, but I don’t see any reason why Daigo can’t catch up to him and quite possibly surpass him pretty darn quickly… Sure, Tokido has mastered/possibly invented a lot of set-ups and option selects but… so what? You really think Daigo can’t memorize and learn to execute enough vortex set-ups to be effective in like… two weeks? It’s not rocket science… Daigo has been playing against Akuma for years. It’s not like he doesn’t already know most of what Akuma is capable of. Tokido went 1-8 against Nemo… Daigo went fucking 12-15 with his like day three Akuma. People underestimate the massive role that “fundamentals” play in these games. Daigo has completely mastered SF4’s gameplay system. Character specific knowledge and experience is huge, but Daigo is still going to throw you when you don’t expect it, jump in at the right times, anti-air nearly everything, and psychic demon you with his day one Akuma. He will rock the vortex stuff better than 95% of Akuma players within a month or two and he is probably already the one of the best in nearly every other phase of the game after a week or two of serious play. (oh I didn’t see superlollo’s post, which says the same exact thing, until after I wrote this - but I completely agree with him)

  5. I still don’t think Evil Ryu is that good, but more health will help… His teleport is terrible, he has no air fireball, and axe kick has kind of blown after I got like 20 minutes of experience against him. We’ll see, I guess. Could be wrong.

Was it confirmed he actually used Akuma against Nemo?

I was of the impression he was driving Yun for those matches and it was during the same gathering that he was tinkering with Akuma.

Oh, that’s not the impression I got, but of course that would completely invalidate that specific part of my argument. I wouldn’t feel any differently, though, overall.

if this does end up happening…Diago vs Tokido mirror anyone?!

From the eventhubs post:

as I wrote on Twitter, Umehara Gouki looked at and played for a few sessions in the face of top Japanese players.
BullCat, one of the best Japanese faces Gouken and Gouki lost to a no name, 20 000BP. Gouki same faces one of the most Yang of Japan: Nemo.
BullCat, intrigued, goes to the other side of the terminal, the Gouki in question was none other than Umehara. The mess ends with a scary 12-15 in Nemo.
UmeGouki ● ○ ● ○ ● ● ○ ○ ● ● ● ● ○ ○ ○ ● ● ○ ● ● ● ● ○ ○ ○ ○ ● 12
Nemo was moderately appreciated not having played against the hand of Umehara …

Nemo is impresionant in its results. Umehara, he, too, there is fear, especially when we see that Nemo has inflicted a severe 8-1 to Tokido (best Gouki Japanese) Umehara, for its part, had done well to hang Yang Nemo with his Gouki.

Looks to me like it was Akuma vs. Yang… Nemo bodied Tokido with Yang 8-1 and Daigo was extremely competitive also playing as Akuma.

Yikes.

Block strings into EX Axe Kicks maybe, but with his new LK Axe Kick being safe on block, I think this will let me be able to keep the up close pressure on better.

That said, I haven’t seen any 2012 E. Ryu, but I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with the character. The fact that he has his hop kick that can be canceled into an air tatsu/demon is also interesting. I’m hoping the character see more play.

I think Daigo will stick with the best shoto in the game…Akuma.

In v2012 it’s +1 on hit, not on block…

On one hand I’d be excited to see Daigo main Akuma to see how he plays Akuma and how well he can do with the character.

On the other hand I’d rather not see silly threads like this.

Honestly saying, Daigo will use whatever character has the least bad matchups, and if he really is changing his main from yun, thats obviously because yun’s play style has been figured out very early,i mean all the top players have their counter strategies against yun,

^ agreed.

We will just have to wait and see what happens

It would be cool to see Daigo switch up some characters but like it’s already been said, he’s extremely good with spacing, mind games and such, so I don’t see him using a mix-up character as well. I was surprised that he switched to Yun when he did tbh.

The thread on the front page says on block.

Daigo is probably bailing on Yun b/c he is about to get the shit nerfed out of him. The guy is going to the top tier characters as usual.
