It’s been confirmed by Capcom that edition select is exclusive to the home versions of Ultra and is local play only (no online).
Yeah it sucks that we can’t play it online, but we should be happy that we have the option to be able to play this as a game mode at all.
Wonder if Capcom has got any other secret modes/improvements under their sleeves, I know I’d kill for an up raged training mode (like ability to view character’s hitbox/frame data, proper reset options for midscreen/corners and more).
I really dunno what the naysayers are on about. Regardless of tournaments, we can still do our own shit offline. To me, the biggest thing is just having the option to explore matchups.
AE Yun? HTF are you going to deal with Super/Ultra traps? V.Ryu and Seth DGAF about your dive kicks. How will V.Akuma vortex stand up to DWU? V.Gief vs Super Abel? Lariat all day until Abel builds U2. Oni/E.Ryu/Viper TOD on V.Seth? Yes please.
And of course this mode will be allowed at SOME tourneys. Just like all chars were allowed during some HSF2 tourneys.
Before vortex, Akuma was considered lower tier in Vanilla by the Japanese because even though he hit hard, he couldn’t take as much damage as the other characters. If he ate a combo into Ultra, it was a losing situation for him.
I’ll paraphrase a quote by a top Japanese player at the time:
“Gouki? Well, I suppose he is good at running away! LOL”
To be fair, we didn’t know half of the crap he was capable of until well after super came along.
There’s a reason Akuma is so consistently considered top tier in each edition despite being nerfed in every version of SF4.
Weren’t Cammy and Fei also lower on the tier list in early vanilla? But seriously, this select edition stuff sucks now. Capcom wasted more time on the trailer than actually thinking about how to properly implement the mode. There’s no excuse not to make it available in endless battle if the only reason for excluding it is due to balance. Allow people to make “ultra only” rooms. Done.
What did he have besides vortex? All his combos were figured out in the first week. Then came cancel into Focus Attack. f.roundhouse was good, but DP into half your life was better.
To put it in simple terms: V.Akuma’s strength relative to the rest of the Vanilla cast isn’t that great because so many characters did crazy damage. Chun’s sweep for example also did 200 stun. Blanka’s U1 basically won him 50% of his matches. Fuerte’s RSF off a mixup was a guaranteed stun. Seth stunned in two combos (and died in 1.5). Viper got her Ultra EVERY round. Rufus j.hk into EX SS took 40% of Akuma. Gief’s cr.lk was a 2f link and did 40 damage (lol).
V.Akuma vs Ultra chars will still be a beast, especially considering he has hit-confirmable DP while they don’t, but he won’t be able to autopilot his way through oki.
Useless mode. I don’t know why they added this shit. I love how they say “You can play vanilla Sagat, but there’s a tradeoff, you only get 1 ultra!” as if that’s even a fuckin tradeoff. His ultra isn’t hard to land, and it does like 50% damage in vanilla.
I’m pretty sure anyone with a brain can see this mode won’t be tournament standard.
That is comparing Akuma to other super powered vanilla characters. However those Vanilla characters don’t have DWU.
So. We are back to lol V Akuma doesn’t care about vortex. He has the speed, reach, mobility, zoning, and damage that he doesn’t need vortex to beat anyone outside of Vanilla easily. Hell, as it is the most successful Akuma player today is one who relies probably the least on vortex out of top Akuma mains: Infiltration wins most often when he plays zoning / surprise rush down - back to zoning style Akuma.
You can’t use what the top players in the world do as a benchmark. Infiltration is just really good at adapting to the opponent. DWU is a big thing for a char like Akuma, especially if other characters get options against him that he can’t use against them.
We’ll see how it pans out, but I don’t see V.Akuma being that dominant against Ultra chars as many people expect him to be. Or rather, the difference between someone like V.Ryu vs an Ultra char won’t be that much as V.Akuma vs Ultra char as expected.
Vanilla characters hit HARD. Akuma was not the exception.
Sagat was absolutely notorious, sure. But when we get ahold of this edition, I bet my life Sagat wont be anywhere near as strong as we remember. Akuma and Seth reporting in.
Well without online the mode just became very meh. If there was any slight chance of Edition Select getting a chance for anything outside exhibitions, that just went out the window.
Anyway, for those who keep trying to ask “…But ST had this mode as standard, why not SF4?”.
One, only Hyper SF2 had true Edition Select and it didn’t exactly last all too long as a tournament played game over ST. ST only had a very limited version of it. You had your ST versions and your OG versions. That’s it. And the cast before was only 16 characters. If you take into account O versions, that’s only 32 characters to worry about. Ultra alone with no ES has 44 characters. Now add Edition Select to that and enjoy the huge ass numbers… You simply cannot compare ST to USF4 in that respect because they’re nothing alike.
