Totally Kane…It’s crazy but yeah…they get off on making mid characters worse like in the case of Gen…especially if someone spotlights them in major tournaments with a few wins…or if an uneducated top player that doesn’t really know the character hypes him up to be better than the character actually is(Gamerbee and Dieminion saying Deejay was top tier in the Ultra builds…which both were super wrong)…then Capcom overreacts and say,
"Crap…Is he too good? Well…let’s nerf him just in case…plus…it will be more rewarding to the player if they actually win with this character(combofiend in the Ultra Deejay spotlight video). How fucked up and lame is that?
Hey Capcom…you were supposed to make EVERY character viable…remember? Not nerf mid tier characters who needed help…into joke Dan-like characters.
I didn’t buy Ultra for that.
Sorry…I’m kinda venting.
With these console changes to Gen…they are REALLY making Xian(and all of us for that matter) think twice about using Gen full time.
He just simply lost more than he gained as we all know.
Yeah bro…I saw that and Kane’s post…I just added to it from my perspective…but you guys are totally right and I agree.
But even with all that… -sigh- like Kane said…I’m still going to play him.
Watching that FT5 realy made me realise how fucking good Xian is. He sounded a bit pesimistic when talking about his chances but damn if he actualy practiced, got the bnb timing down, maybe a few setups he can still win it or at the very least place it top 8.
You guys were frowning upon me when I didn’t mind the arcade changes. I bet you wouldn’t mind to have those sweet buffs they took away from the arcade version. He actualy seemed a lot of fun there and not broken. Capcom’s way of balancing pisses me off sometimes but eh we just have to live with it.
Well…Yes in hindsight! But even YOU(and the Gen community) didn’t know they were actually going to make him worse! He was already nerfed in the Japanese Arcade with the HK Gekiro nerf and I still would have at least been happy to experiment with the possible juggle potential off of Mantis Super. That sounded very interesting.
Which brings me too…
I know right?! Back when the Arcade changes were announced I was like…ohhh!!..I gotta NOT say I like this too much online or else they might nerf it for console. But maybe they saw how broken it was during the Japanese testing…cause soon as console changes were released…They literally nerfed the super damage and removed that juggle potential from it and I was like…Aaaw…Fuck!
I can still poke people in the eye even with those nerfs.
On a serious note, during the first week of Ultra I fought an old friend of mine who happens to be a former Akuma player (now Evil.Ryu). We used to go fairly even in the past but now I was consistently beating him. After winning most of our matches he asked me if Gen got buffed.
Lol
The truth is…I really can’t afford to fuck up while playing USF4 version of Gen.
Gen still feels really good as a character…I have yet to find a single complaint. His super damage nerf is the only real nerf that I “notice”. Where that 50 health would have killed my opponent.
I think we just need to see how everything plays out. At least we don’t have bandwagons all over our character. It’s rewarding winning with a character like Gen, where we are forced to minimize mistakes and play solidly. Wouldn’t you agree?
Nobody should be referencing these silly tier lists that just came out recently btw…how can anyone take a tier list seriously in the game’s early stages <.<
I agree with you guys that the positive aspect of this is that no one bandwagons Gen anymore, but at the same time the bandwagoning wouldn’t go on for too long as he’s a hard character to use, and tier whores don’t have the patience (or incitement, really) to use Gen.
I think the answer to that question is simply that they don’t want a hard-to-use, obscure character to be viable in high level play, which, to me, makes less sense than the reverse; if anything, you should be rewarded for sticking with a character that has you struggling initially. Yes, balance is the optimal state, but if you’re going to make some characters better than others it’s even more ridiculous to have the easier ones better at the highest level of play, because that voids the use of the others at all levels of play.
Gen won one evo and wasn’t even represented in much at all beyond that. Not even top 8 in any big tournies as far as I can remember. Xian lost to Daigo like 10-0 (can’t remember exactly); he lost to Alioune’s Cammy in that TV show; and he lost to Sako’s Evil Ryu – after which Gen is nerfed and Evil Ryu is buffed. Absolutely absurd, but at the same time understandable: They want the poster boy Evil Ryu to dominate the meta game because that’s a character people of many layers of the skill spectrum are willing to use and be inspired by. Worst reason ever. God forbid patient loyalists are rewarded.
“In this new iteration we decided to look what each experienced player wants, after hearing the complaints of Kane, Street and the rest of the gen shoryuken forums we took some of their requests to adress these issues and make gen even more challenging to play. We adressed the -5 sweep, and made it worse aswell as we realised roll buff was too good so instead of making it worse on block we removed crane stance.”
