I am personally liking the new Gen more, but that is thanks to the unintentional hidden power of U2. If they gave him back cr mp and super damage I’d be kind of happy. Though it’s super annoying that they give him hard knockdown in 2012 just to remove it the next instance, but I don’t find soft knockdown that much worse now with DWU anyway.
I’d like a reminder on how Gen deserved a nerf while E Ryu got buffed, and why Gen deserved more nerfs than Akuma lol.
Personally, I been thinking of picking up Chun Li as a secondary but I’m going to try to stick with Gen for Ultra. I just invested too much time in this character by now and I just can’t see myself changing mains any time soon. Chun Li fits my style as a Gen player so the transition is not so bad as well.
Guys, I just noticed a very easy crossup Oga setup: Incomplete LK Gekiro > EX Oga. Extremely easy timing. Just do the Oga when the opponent hits the ground. Easy to combo into Ultra too. So useful. Now I know there are setups that don’t cost any bar, but this one is far less strict, works on several characters (only tested Yun and Ryu so far but I am confident it will work on a large portion of the cast) and deals more damage.
Yeah I’ve been trying her out too. She is actualy pretty similiar in some ways. Both characters have good footsies, she is also half charge like gen which I like. She has good air to air and anti air options. Easy to combo into ultra, fireball punish ultra.
I’m with you on this one Kane, not dropping Gen because of too much work put in, but playing chun li on the side is fun too.
You guys probably already watched this but Xian faced Leslie in a ft5:
Interesting use of Gen’s U2 on Sagats Tiger Shots. You could tell Xian was really dominating whenever he had Leslie in the corner. He seems to like the Jyasen buff but he is also having a hard time adjusting to the new timing for c.lp > TC2 (some of those matches he could have won if he didn’t drop that link).
It’s pretty sad how many of those EX Red Focuses he missed along with the low damage of c.mp > hands > Super. One thing that I noticed is that he is not using ex gekirou for the hard knockdown and he still has the old mindset of saving for Super. I agree with Xian that Gen players will have to develop a new style if they wish to keep representing the old man.
My respect for Xian just increased 10 fold. Last year I was pretty sure he was going to drop the character when those nerfs were announced but I can see that he is still struggling with the old man along with us. If Capcom releases a new patch by August we should at least let them know how unreasonable some of those nerfs are for an underrated character like Gen.
I guess they figured since there are so few Gen players they can just do whatever they want without hearing any complains.
Yeah, that’s what I think, too. They simply felt “wait a second – we can’t have a non-poster boy being viable; let’s nerf him!” I think that’s an awful way of going about “balancing”.
Mantis U2 doesnt work that well against Sagat. You can see that he has missed U2 against Leslie’s Low TS quite a few times, and that is because Low TS doesnt extend Sagat’s hurtbox that much. I use Mantis U2 with Gen and EX tatsu with Gouken against projectiles, and it isnt very effective against Oni’s gourai hadouken or Sagat’s Low TS, because their hurtboxes are smaller than expected. It works against all other hadoukens like a charm, and works good as a whiff punish tool as well.
I’m surprised Xian stuck with Gen. I remember him saying that he’ll switch character once Ultra’s out.
I think all of us are having a harder time with the new Gen for sure…I still can’t hit the TC from cr lp without dropping it…just like Xian…although I just use cr lp/lk to standing jab-> TC2 instead on characters like Sagat,Guile, Dudley…etc since the timing is still like 2012 and standing jab hits them crouching. I’m wondering why Capcom nerfed him so hard…maybe they wanted us to struggle more… so less people would play him?
Harder to win with etc to make it more rewarding…as they seem to enjoy making certain characters harder for you to consistently win with(Gen,Deejay, etc). Basically turning us into Masochist or something. Which is dumb logic if that’s true. If they would have kept both Gen and Deejay the same like in the Japanese Arcade build…I would have been happy. Even in that build both characters are mid at best…maybe high mid for Gen.
Well did you ever think he was higher than that before Ultra? I never did…even in 2012.
Because one exceptional player took him to the highest level and won major tournaments with him…doesn’t make him higher. Plus a lot of those wins were
off of people not that familiar with what Gen could do with his tricks and against an opponent’s wake up(oga/ambiguous crossups, setups…etc)…and super to Ultra for comeback…now that everyone knows, he wasn’t too much a threat if you knew what to expect…even before Ultra.
Outside a few top Gens out there(Amiyu,Xian)…he was/is too complicated a character for the masses to win consistently with IMO.
He was made only for loyal masochist like us.
Couldn’t agree more Layzzey (as evidenced by my previous posts on the matter in this topic). One player did well with him, and that was when no one knew of his tricks. And a lot of his matches were real close if I recall correctly.
