scratches head… i dont see how you could think sent was anywhere near as boring as hulk… it just doesnt compute… sent has unfly and double jump combos, chaining supers, ridiculously long tac fly combos, FLIGHT, yellow spit, little drone niggas doing his bidding, and stomps people.
(So, I looked through the Tier List thread and I have to say that I agree with your list of tiers more than two or three in the original post, DevilJin 01.)
Regardless of whether he’s boring or not (which is basically impossible to say objectively; personally I find Zero, Tron [such irony that both Megaman characters bore me] and Servbot 42/Sentinel hella boring, but people play all of them more than Hulk), he’s still gotten more screen time than a lot of other characters. Hell, he was easily the most amusing part of EVO between Noah beating up idiots–talk of skill for his age aside–and that infamous incident.
Since we’re speaking of this–I really need to stop using that as a sentence starter–and there will probably not be much to talk about until that Capcom NYC event concludes, I must ask this: Has there been any information given out yet on how much characters were used in MvC3 at EVO? I’d honestly be surprised if everyone got represented despite all the participants.
But-but…I like watching Doctor Cossack give commentary.
Hulk has way more than s.H. He has the j.H clap which sets up double overheads, gamma wave into GAMMA TSUNAMI, j.S 4 way MIX UP OH SNAP, gamma crush rushdown with frame advantage etc. His offense IMO is more interesting than Sent’s. Sent just has more interesting combos without an assist I guess.
Airtola just played at some Long Beach, CA tourney. I’d link you the stream replay, but Twitchtv’s acting funny for me (redirecting me to the channel; they wouldn’t have deleted the video, I think?). Actually, I’ll just link it anyway. Maybe you’ll have better luck than me:
I agree with you on Zero and Tron, but the reasons why people play them are glaringly obvious enough. Sentinel also has his reasons (I’ve been fighting Mag/Sent teams all effing day and it’s really starting to get to me). But Hulk? I agree with Devil that he has his fancy stuff, but look at the frame time spent doing all that. If that 2H S is blocked or plain misses, Hulk is a standing target (Unless of course they get baited by armor). So what do you do to prevent that? You jump, and not just occasionally, you move across the stage with it. Now you’ve got a bunny hopping hulk coming at you, learning that he can’t approach from air thanks to characters like Taskmaster, or spending a bazgemajillion years in frame lag from his aerial attacks that are considerably safe. All in all, it’s the lag that makes him boring, not the lack of mix ups. The plain ol’ ‘Hey look, I’m baiting a hit’ lag that pushes most players to Sentinel instead.
It was so painful for me to watch. His reactions were priceless, but the fact that the only word he knew was OTG really disappointed me.
yea your correct about this. A lot of people just spam heavy and thinks his shoulder charges aren’t as useful since most of the time you need to end it in a hyper to make it safe. Sentinel has his main approach which without his command grab no one would ever get close to being hit by him.
Catching people in armored normals can only be fun for so long before you realize that you want to get more technical on a faster character. Then again, it is a matter of play style.
You can always cover Hulk’s block strings with an assist if they get blocked. That’s why he particularly does well with assists like Iron Man’s repulsor blast or Haggar lariat so he can keep them locked down and keep your strings safe. Even without assist you can always see yourself getting blocked and do a backwards charge and come back in with the armored charge and possibly call assist then. With assists especially you never have to worry about anything getting blocked when using about any character. Most average players jump the gun on the advance guards any ways which you can counter hit and blow up also.
Gamma charge with solid assists gets him in pretty nicely against most characters and it’s only the absolute lameouts like Dorm/Trish/Task that can keep him out forever. Which then you’re better off just switching in a character that will get in faster. Which can be done by DHCing off of his gamma crush into someone safe or just raw tagging them in. His gamma crush of course never being terrible to use as long as you have a safe DHC since it’s basically a 70 frame invincible DP that does 400k on a full hit.
I understand Devil, Hulk can be played on par with other characters. Cool cool. Still doesn’t make him any less boring to me. I did those mission for some acheesements, and dropped him like a sack of rotten potatoes. No thank you to 2 second long input delay for combos.
I don’t really know what other reason I can give you for more experts not wanting to play him. Sorry
I also don’t see how people can enjoy playing Hulk… Basically mash H and pray. This game is so open ended with some much tech. It’s only a matter of time until you’ll want to explore more interesting characters that actually have options. I know when I’m playing Haggar assist and I get stuck with him I don’t think of pipe spammin and praying for a hit it very fun. I don’t know how people can bother with Hulk.
As for Noah: Well, if I was Evo and I had to play him, I would have just picked Phoenix. Dante/Haggar/Phoenix. Anything to keep my Evo hope alive. I mean, if you know he’s gonna abuse armor and you don’t feel like blocking it, counter pick haggar.
