Ultimate Salt - Nerfs you are looking FORWARD to in UMvC3

I’m not going to beat around the bush or sugar coat this at all - there was a lot about MvC3 that made me salty. A lot of shit that some characters were capable of that would just make me toss up my controller in frustration and roll my eyes. A lot of things that I personally felt needed to be changed or retweaked in order for the game to even begin to be considered ‘balanced.’

I know that this is not a popular opinion around here, but I am a firm believer that the answer to balance doesn’t solely reside in ‘improve the other characters, but don’t nerf the good ones!’ mainly due to the fact that no matter how powerful you make low tier character X that won’t make top tier character Y any less powerful. It may affect character Y’s popularity depending on how powerful character X was made, but then you just end up with two broken characters kicking sand in everyone’s faces, and that’s not fun. No, I don’t believe every character should play exactly the same or have the same stats, that’s just stupid. Although ridiculous shit is fun for awhile - after all, it is Mahvel, baby! - but eventually reality sets in and you (hopefully) realize that it makes the game less fun overall.

Sometimes nerfs are needed. Sometimes nerfs actually improve the game as a whole by giving everyone more of a fighting chance. Having said that, these are the top 3 nerfs I am looking forward to in UMvC3. Feel free to post your own; you know you want to!

1: Magneto disruptor and dash speed nerfs. I always hated the fact that Magneto could go from full screen zoning with the fastest beam in the game that also managed to produce ridiculous chip damage to in-your-face high-low mixups in the blink of an eye. Combined with basically any other zoning assist (Sentinel Drones, Hidden Missiles) most members of the cast would find themselves locked down in the corner facing a slow death with few to no options. His health was low, sure, but actually getting a hold on Magneto is usually a feat unto itself. If a good Magneto wants to keep you out and is content to play the match that way, good luck!

2: Wolverine Berserker Slash and health nerf. Once again it was decided that one of the fastest, most damaging characters in the game needed a little more oomph, with the answer apparently being to give him a teleport-attack which crossed up and was completely invulnerable during the dash portion. Brilliant! Berserker slash alone, when combined with another fast, screen covering assist (Akuma’s tatsu or you’re doing it wrong) pretty much guaranteed that one wrong left/right or high/low guess versus Wolverine’s constant onslaught would result in quick and painful death - especially once everyone caught on to the fact that Wolverine could cause so much damage in X-Factor 1 that he could easily kill off two characters before it expired. Not even going to bring up the Derp Kick since it wasn’t changed, but Berserker Slash was brutal enough, especially since you can cancel it into Berserker Charge on hit to continue your combo. To top it off, it was decided that a character who had all this going for him also needed 950k health, meaning in order to actually kill Wolverine you would have to either blow X-Factor, have a healthy stock of meter, or have flawless execution while performing an advanced combo. Brilliant guys!

3: Phoenix air special nerf and health nerf. When this was originally announced I actually thought it was a bit much, but eventually realized that most of the cast didn’t have an answer to the horror that was super-jump h-shot spam. Heavily damaging, multi-hit fireballs that tracked that were placed on a character 3 different extremely fast teleport options was bad enough, let never mind the fact that this is Phoenix we’re talking about here, who always has the threat of Dark Phoenix waiting in the wings. The general consensus to dealing with her was “snap her in early and kill her before 5 bars” though unless you had a solid 50/50 guess set up (which doesn’t always work) snapping in against a decent Phoenix player would only result in you wasting a bar and likely taking some salty balls to the face before she tagged back out. Happy to see it go, but I have the feeling the 1 air special nerf won’t make it to live before being changed to something else.

Bonus salt: DHC and TAC Glitches gone. I think we can all stop kidding ourselves when we refer to them as “tricks” - the fact that Capcom actually went out of their way to remove it in UMvC3 kinda proves that they were never intended in the first place. This is in contrast to combos, which many defenders of the glitches typically compare them to, which were never intended in the first place but actually contributed to the game overall and would eventually become a staple of the series. Happy to see them go.

The X-Factor nerf, hands down. I hated the boosts so much and losing to someone using it would just made me salty.

Also fuck Phoenix into oblivion.

I am happy to see X-Factor being changed and normalized. The way the bonuses were divvied out amongst the cast was highly unbalanced and in some cases did more harm than good. For example, anyone playing Chun-Li or Felicia can tell you that they don’t really need anymore speed, but would end up becoming so absurdly fast in X-Factor it would result in dropped combos left and right and often lead to death.

phoenix nerf… it’s phoenix… really?but on the real the xfactor nerf
will make it easier to land some ood wesker combos, i just hope that it’s
still fast enough to land a launcher after his otg

SWISS CHEESE
SWISS CHEESE
SWISS CHEESE

He can do that out of x-factor now, the otg pop up lasts a little bit longer.

X-Factor is the only one specifically I’m looking forward to.

More than anything, I just want Viewtiful Joe and Chris (among other weak characters) to get improvements.

I like the Wolverine and Wesker health nerfs the most out of what was revealed as their damage potential is so high

A lot of the announced changes seem too knee-jerky though, even if they made me saltier than the dead sea.

I wish these were changes the real changes:
No dive kick should be on hard- If you want your aggressive offense you need to commit to it and not get OS throws
No dive kick should hit things above and behind them- I’d like a general reworking of many attack hit boxes, because some of them just make no sense

No lie, I would keep everything that isn’t a glitch the same if even one of those two things were changed

Magneto nerf is unnecessary for a character with 850k health ammy already beat him can dock under disruptor and it’s -10 to 15 not safe its your fault if you get hit multiple times

Wolverine health nerf is stupid wolverine is meant to be a brawler not some puny banner, Berserker slash maybe

Phoenix is meant to be some sort of goddess (with big tits) the only nerf she needs is capcom should remove the feather from her normal no more 15 hit confirmation if she can still do that there will be a lot of salt regardless of the air nerf only a few selection of character should be able to beat her dorm skrull ammy cap akuma ryu, morrigan etc

xfactor yes but not 100% normalized some character should still be feared.

wesker health nerf is also stupid there are at least 13 or more character with over 1m and she hulk is no joke.

the problem is there is a lot of terrible teams and copy cats because hulk and hagger is your favorite character does not mean they work together or playing zero wesker wolverine no reliable assist.

hitboxes…that is all

oh and the amount of braindead tactics/characters in this game

YOU SMOKIN’ THAT HAPPY HAPPY WAM WAM.

I was just about to ask him where he got the crack he was clearly smoking and where I could get some.

your point. explain

smokers dont get explanations.

I still don’t think Magneto losing his estaka startup will stop the stupidity of his zoning. Magnetic Blast, Replusion in Ultimate are crazy good when people started to zone people out. Magnetic Blast has a crazy amount of frame advantage, Magneto could super jump spam a onslaught of those insanely good projectiles.

yeah mags will still have godlike keepaway, thats for sure… but atleast it wont be as braindead as disruptor spam.

-dime

WOW that’s your explanation Magneto can not keep away without a decent assist, disruptor damage and durability is laughable not all character are meant to be in your face (Spencer). every character that have a projectile can win magneto except maybe iron man. doom task sent ryu akuma dorm authur etc

First point - Magneto. Because two characters in the game can duck his beam, it’s balanced? This on one of the most mobile characters in the game? And not to mention the absurd chip it deals? Basically what you’re saying is that because Ammy exists, everything about Magneto’s combination of full screen zoning dominance and superior rushdown is A-Ok.

Second point - Wolverine. Yes, Wolverine is “supposed” to be a brawler, but giving him an invincible teleport attack that crosses up is not the answer. Turning a match into literally a guessing game where you either guess right or die isn’t fun. Wolverine is *supposed *to be a lot of things if you take directly from the source material. For example, he’s never been represented as being blindingly fast, but he has two moves that play off that. Also, he lacks his healing factor. If Wolverine was portrayed as he was “supposed” to, he’d dominate everyone save maybe 5 members of the cast - which he practically does already!

Third point - Phoenix. Again, if you wanted an accurate portrayal of Phoenix, you might as well call the game a wrap because literally no one could stand up to Dark Phoenix. I also don’t understand how you’re able to pull out this list of seemingly random characters that “should” be the only ones capable of beating her, and what that notion is based off of. Maybe it might make more sense if you explained it to me.

Fourth point - X-Factor. Bonuses were completely out of control for some characters, and made no sense for others. Let’s give Wesker one of the highest power boosts in the game when he already hits like a fucking truck. Let’s make Chun-Li so fast she’s damn near uncontrollable by her player. Let’s make Dark Phoenix so strong she can eliminate an entire team in seconds. Balanced! Even with normalization, characters will still be feared if they are played well.

Fifth point - Wesker. There’s no reason a character with such high mobility and damage potential should also have one of the highest health ratings in the game. Wesker’s design basically goes against every previously known fighting game convention where faster, more mobile characters tend to have less health but have more combo potential, and stronger, harder-hitting characters tend to have more health but are less mobile.

Also I fully agree with hitboxes on many characters needing to be revisited, especially Dante.

mags’ addf nerf is the biggest hit to his gameplay imo which weakens his combos. I don’t mind the slower disruptor since I prefer rushing down, but imo he’s more balanced overall, at least for now. can’t wait to see what annoying shit people come up with using attract and repulsion. I can easily see some nasty mixup potential in those two moves.

on-topic: XF nerf, wolverine nerf, and removal of DHC glitch. even though I’m a wesker player in vanilla I’m honestly kind of meh about his health nerf since I’m gonna be maining strider anyway. lol. I heard somewhere that haggar and tron assist are getting nerfed as well, so that should be another one to look forward to (not-so invincible assists)

I agreed with wolverine Berserker slash

Magneto This every character that have a projectile can win magneto except maybe iron man. doom task sent ryu akuma dorm authur etc

wesker mobility is he’s teleport he is slow, but he’s teleport let him travels fast and change position

some character should be feared in xfactor

if phoneix can still mash jab and wall bounce with trap is still going to be a salty game for a lot of people. the air fireball was never the problem she plays like trish

Magneto disruptor is -6 or 5 from fullscreen btw. The nerf to his tri-dash makes him less stupid rushdown and more of a zoner which makes sense to his character.

I’m liking the Phoenix nerf, it makes her more riskier to use and more characters have a chance against her with the one action per jump nerf. This also keeps her as Phoenix with a little less zoning, people seem to forget that she can be scary when she RTSD.

With Wolverine’s berserker slash invincibility gone, he’s in the same boat as Felicia now. Swiss Cheese, no more mashing with Wolverine I guess.

Akuma’s assist is no longer soft knockdown makes it more less like a beam.

Zero’s lvl.3 buster causing soft knockdown rather than hard makes me happier, that thing is stupid.

Dante getting his hammer and sword hitboxes tone down (although I play him), makes me have faith in the developers. Again another thing that was also stupid.

Haggar and Tron assists getting the nerf bat surprises me that the developers saw this as a problem, also gives me a lot more faith in the developers of MVC3.
