Ultimate Guide To Holding Japanese Balltop Joysticks!

the one daigo uses is wineglass w/ shaft inbetween ring&pinky right?

I use this also. Due to the tilt, I hereby dub it the spilled wine glass.

wineglass and no homo here

Hey my grip has a cool name.

Ive been reppin the Eagle Grip since my first hadoken in 1993 <3

Thanks for this thread, its neat to see the different grips people use. I rock a top down variation of the eagle when I am in my local arcade, with my thumb and middle finger on each side and my index finger on top. I have a fight stick coming in pretty soon though and want to try changing it up.

I use Daigo’s grip! … Just happens to be the most natural for me, and i think it’s the easiest way to get Dhalsims combos off.

I’m a wineglass user, so damn comfortable and precise.

I see the Aristocratic Grip is nowhere to be found in this thread. Very well, gentlemen: http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g41/billytwix/P7300326.jpg

Missing the pipe and top hat. Don’t see how that grip would work.

Edit:
Here are two videos of Daigo using a stick. He is not using the wineglass method.

I dare say, looks like the nohomo (lol). Watching other Japanese players on Youtube, seems to show the similar results.

Three Fingered Rodeo for me too. It just feels the most efficient to me since you can do a lot with just the 3 fingers, requiring even minial writst movements. All the other grips seem to need a fair amount of arm and wrist to achive good speed, which I find tiring after a while.

Though most people seem to put in a lot of arm, so I think I am in the minority here.

Nice video. Great guide for players new to stick.

I used the wine glass initially, but switched to the eagle grip which gives me much better accuracy. The wine glass looks really cool though.

Help me!

I have went through a variety of different grips. NO matter what I have tried, I can never pull off super combos properly when on the left (Player 1) side of the screen.

For example, in most of my tests with Ryu, I could always easily (on the player 2 side) punch + shoryuken + sinku had + Metsu had. 100% no problem. When I try on the left (P1) side it's a nightmare. In fact most of the time I can't even do a metsu alone. Often I find myself doing shoryukens all over the place, even when I'm deliberately trying to avoid it.

I guess it must be the physical state in which I can do combos while in the "pulling motion" of the stick (pulling = typical movement when on player 2 side) as opposed to "pushing movements" (push = typical movement when on P1 side). Is there base grips any of you guys know that would help alleviate this problem? It's been a nightmare. I just want to be able to pull off ultras on the P1 side as swiftly as I can from the P2 side. I understand it is up to me to find a comfortable grip, but I am just looking for a base grip, or a place to start, maybe some input from some one else who has had this problem. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Ha! I’ve got the same problem. It kills me that I can consistently pull off Ryu’s FADC ultra on both sides with a saturn pad, but only 2P side on a stick. However, my overall execution is now better with a stick.

The only thing I’ve managed to come up with is I’m not hitting foward enough on 1P side, instead I’m hitting down-foward at the end of the ultra most of the time.
You’re right about the whole push pull thing…just need to build more muscle memory.

Sometimes I switch between the No Homo and Wineglass but I always seem to go back to the No Homo. Definitely my favorite grip.

@ Kubebot and Kozzy

Its just practice dudes! Don’t be discouraged and keep at it.

 For sure…awesome video BTW!

And remember: It’s super important to use the same grip as Daigo. It’s the only way to GREATNESS.

Yeah, the grip Daigo is using feels awkward as hell to me but I’m forcing myself to use it anyway. I feel like my game has already improved.

I keep switching up between wineglass, shaft between middle/ring fingers and shaft between ring and pinky fingers.

I can’t decide which to stick with yet.

I use a method where i’m open handed. My thumb does curl around to the right side of the ball to push back when needed.

I call it the pimp hand.
