lol, chill out guys.
Securing the venue I’m heading down to EB today with Mike to discuss booking EB for the tournament later this afternoon. Any tips from those who have tried it before?
Entry fees What you guys think about the $3-5 entry fee? I like it, but I’d like (read: demand) feedback. I just think $10 is pretty high for anyone even moderately into fighting games, and may put off some people. Like me.
Prizes I don’t know how EB works. But if it’s like last time, they’ll take the entry fees and give out EB certificates. If that is how the prizes will work, then we may have to increase the entry fees. I’ll hammer this out today with EB later.
Date 21st or 28th, I should be fine with either one. Still need to look into course schedules and stuff to see if there will be any problems, but should be okay.
Advertising We still need someone to make a flyer. I really think that if we post up flyers everywhere, we can draw out a large crowd. If it turns out that we advertise the hell out of this tournament and still get crappy 10 man turnouts, then it’s still a result. I want to see what we can get with good advertising. A control experiment, if you will.
Games
So far, we got
Guilty Gear: 2
Third Strike: 4
Tekken 5: 2
Tekken 5:DR: 1
Soul Calibur: 1
Looks like 3s is in.
Let me say this. Looking at it from a totally logical point of view, we ran Guilty Gear and Smash at our last tournament. Normally, we try not to run a tournament for the same game twice in a row. I could see us doing this for Smash, since it consistently attracts 30+ people (our last one had 59 participants), but it won’t work with our planned venue.
As for running Guilty Gear again, that is different. Most of us do play Guilty Gear, and for most of us Guilty Gear is our main game. However, we already ran GG last tournament. That tournament had a turnout of 10 players, two of which weren’t in our regular group. Granted, the tournament wasn’t heavily advertised at all, it’s hard to use the argument that had it been advertised, the turnout would have been significantly higher, as the Smash tournament, which was advertised the same as the GG tournament, not a lot, had almost 60 people.
Running a second GG tournament in a row wouldn’t really be beneficial to us or the fighting game community here at UIUC, small as it may be. The only people entered would be just ourselves, and it would be, to that effect, just another casuals session that we always have together.
There’s also consideration of the venue. Considering they let us do the tournament, they would be letting us use their space for free, and possibly even provide prizes. Getting a turnout of 8 people for one of the two games we’ll host will not be good for their business. Even though we’ve had crappy turnouts like that in the past EB games tournaments, we still want to make an effort to help patronize their business, in return for their kindness of letting us use their space.
So as much as we would like to “fuck people,” taking such a selfish standpoint doesn’t really make sense. Assuming we take that approach, and throw a Guilty Gear tournament solely for ourselves, what do we get out of it? No new players are going to come, and it will just be us playing like it was regular casuals. As it doesn’t help ourselves, so does it not help patronize the venue by trying to get more people to come to the event.
And as always, THOUGHTS?
