Cheers.
Wow, those videos are ridiculous. Thanks, mutantxp.
for future reference: mutantxp = anthony, a.k.a THE scrub. Not just A scrub, but THE scrub
actually I’m writing this down in Notepad so I would have the opportunity to post it wherever. Still, that’s a good enough excuse for putting up pictures of hot women
The marvel sticks at Zot Zone are supposedly fixed, so check them out…
The 1p side of CvS2 seems to be totally destroyed, however…haha…I’ll get to work on that…
Anyways, almost done with the log, still need to write up Day 4…
EVO log, Day 3
SATURDAY
So yeah, just to clear things up…BMoreChun isn’t from NY, he’s from Maryland. I used to live there! Prince George’s county represent! Haha…I wonder if WPGC is still spinning tracks…
So yeah, I was freakin tired, so I ended up taking sporadic naps from 9 am till 5 pm, effectively missing out all the semi-final matches (or so I thought)…I dunno what’s wrong with my body…
So my friend Allen calls me up and wonders where the heck I am…I told him that I was sleeping, and that the evo schedule was all messed up anyway, and that I didn’t want to go back hoping to catch a glimpse of say, a CvS2 Semi-Final, only to have evo run behind again and instead, they’re running a soul caliber 2 match…or something like that…it must suck for the people who had to fly here to be adjusting to the laggy schedule. I live in the southern part of orange county, so travelling wasn’t such a big deal…
So he calls me up and tells me that he and Eugene (and Eugene’s friend) were gonna go to Arcade Infinity to eat. I was thinking “cool, I was just there, but I’d go again…” but by the time I was done getting out of bed (showering, driving, etc.), they were already back in Cal Poly. Oh well, my plan is still on schedule.
What’s the plan, you ask? Well…I had a lot of homework to catch up on (including leading a discussion in class on monday), so I was planning on going to the cafe next to Life Plaza (cuz I heard the non-boba foods at Life Plaza are diarrhea inducing) to get a bowl of ramen and finish reading my book.
Ummm…if there are any other anthropology majors out there, check it; i was reading a book called The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down, by Anne Fadiman…pretty engaging ethnography on Hmong culture and its clashes with biomedicine’s hegemony…anyway…
So I’ve been here before with my ex, right…she speaks chinese and blends in that place better than I do…and everything was fine (we got our meals and everything, nothing bad happened), but this time around, I had to wait like 3 minutes until they gave me a menu. There were only 7 other people there, and they were all a family, so yeah…whatever, I look at the menu and decide that I’m gonna try the chicken-chop noodle soup…had to wait about 5 minutes till they took my order…
Anyways, this all made for good reading time. I actually finished a few chapters before my food finally came out. It took a really long time…longer than the time when I went to get pho at the pho place a few yards down…I’d say I waited about 15-20 minutes for some simple looking ramen. It tasted fine, but the experience was dampened by the bad service…
I think it’s because I look more Americanized than the rest of the people who went…I don’t think people mistake me for a fob (which, admittedly, is a large part of the population that frequents Diamond Plaza), so maybe they just didn’t like the fact that I was patronizing their services as a “foreigner”…this speculation was made possible due to similar stories that I have heard from 2 other people…
As soon as I finish, I leave to go read at Life Plaza (the place with the best boba in the world), but as soon as I step outside, I feel the warm winds…I realize that it’s about 7:30 pm, and that the weather in SoCal is pretty dope…so I read outside Life Plaza for a while.
(In case you’re confused, the “plaza” is called Diamond Plaza; “Life Plaza” is the name of the restaurant…kinda confusing…)
Anyway, Allen’s deaf, so he doesn’t hear his phone ringing as I am trying to call him…I wanted to know if they were still holding the CvS2 team tourney…
I succumb to my boba weakness and order a pair of drinks…lots of semi-hot and hot girls in here…good atmosphere heh heh
I ended up getting a mug with a picture of a crab on it…I guess it technically came free with the drink??? This place is too good…I’m gonna try to come here at least every other week…
So it’s around 9 something, and I’m almost done with my homework…I figured that I shouldn’t miss a whole day of evo, so I head to Cal Poly…stuffed with boba…stomach withstanding, but with effort…
The big news: Daigo got sent to losers by ratio1beatdown, and was eliminated in losers by eddie lee from NY…I guess it sucks for me that I missed those matches; hopefully they’ll be on the DVD? Kind of like how Ohnuki was taken out by American players…hehe…
Interestingly enough, no SoCal players made top 8 for CvS2…something about whack brackets, as someone informed me…same thing in other games as well? ooooh…
Well I didn’t really care too much, but I heard that NorCal was looking good in every game, even MvC2…oh well, I’m from san jose heheheh
(no hate, no favoritism…moving on…)
Went to the BYOC room to play some more casuals…there, I got to play the man, Dr. B…
It was so fun playing against him…he kept it random and playful; using s-cbs and his s-groove team last year that almost beat daigo…maybe he was using those teams against me cuz he knew about my mad skillz? haha anyway, his s-groove was something I have never really played against, in any of the players that I’ve played before…there’s a lack of S-groove in socal, too…but yeah, it made the game a lot more fun for me, so if you’re reading this, thanks for the ggs, Dr. B…hopefully I’ll fun into u again when I go back up north…I’m the guy with the green hair who uses Todo…that should narrow it down heh heh
He was beasting with like 22 wins…I swear I had him a few times…heh…it was crazy that even though he was using s-groove, HE was the one who was throwing people a lot…good stuff…
I watched a few games of Justin Wong ownage…with 3 commandos…how…
And later, I watched the MvC2 team tourney. Ok, so I guess a lot of people were laughing along with the hecklers, but personally I found them to be quite annoying. People need to shut up sometimes…especially when they say stupid stuff…
It was funny when this one guy was like “This isn’t Tekken!” but he had to play out his own sayings by saying them multiple times. As if it wasn’t bad enough the first time? “Freedom Prevails” uhhh yeah we all know Captain America says that…the worst part was when Justin was beasting, and this guy right in front of me was like “you’re still fat!” It sucks that when you’re so good, you’re bound to have haters, but this kind of trash talk is pretty juvenile…it’s actually a kind of hate i see a lot over here, and it makes me feel kind of ashamed to be associated with the “west coast”…that same guy also tried to say something about the intermission, but as he was yelling, he messed up on the pronounciation of the word “intermission” haha…should have called him out on that…
When Tom Cannon (it was Tom, right?) gave us the little pep talk about how “people around the world travel here to have a good time,” I thought he was gonna address the stupid hecklers, but instead it had to do with some poker shenanigans…just great…the team tourney was moved to sunday (i.e., CANCELLED), and people left disappointed…but I think he was gonna “postpone” it anyway cuz it was getting late…best part of the night was clockw0rk’s comeback with his S/D team…when Soo picked servbot it was kinda funny, but it’s too bad he didn’t actually know how to use him…that would have been cool to watch.
It was like 2 or 3 in the morning, but I wasn’t tired…however, my friend was, so I drove him home…while everyone was partying at the Shilos…
Gettin drunk when I’m not there??? Ahhhhh tell me next time foolios!
Kenny…I saw a picture of you with hypnotic…ahh man…
Well, I wasn’t in any part of it. Sounded like tons of fun, though…I’ll leave the stories up to them.
more to come later…
Abel’s log
Friday:
Drop the gang off to reg. Come back, stand in line with Ian. Watch Ian go crazy with introducing me to cool norcal people. Ian’s energy dwindles as we get closer to the registration booth. Ian comments on Tekken 5’s Asuza’s breasts being awesome. Acknowledgement and porn references ensue.
Saturday:
Meet Japanese players via Anthony and Sugiyama. Kokujin is a hilarious mother. He and Sugiyama put up with my salvo of questions; K.O. does not. Kokujin beasts all over K.O.'s face for it (in a friendly, funny way). Kokujin = Jiraiya from Naruto. Play Combofiend and Raoh; both good matches despite sticks. Watch Eliot advance while I get stuffed in the gutter. Plot to kill Eliot set in motion. Hit on one of the workers at the gameroom. Success. ggpo evo, hello flirtdom.
Sunday:
Migraine.
wake up at 4 pm, go over to watch tail end of CvS2 loser brackets. Am bored. Leave. Watch peter play in console room against elitist prick snk players. Leave almost abruptly. Loss of memory ensues. Abel remembers nothing past that moment.
And, on that note…
here’s another asian chick
Guys. I’ve decided to pick up third strike. I’m currently in Taiwan and they have a 3s scene here. I intend to represent UCI 3S’rz to the fullest at their bi weekly next saturday. Anyone have any tips on what i can do with Ryu?
Anti airs are the far fierce, roundhouse chain, jumping roundhouse (when they’re on the downward arc of their jump), and dashing under them and doing something, hopefully crouching shorts into super.
As for you jumping in, always go deep and use either fierce or roundhouse. Don’t try to cross up with ryu, as the mk is ambiguous (worse for you than them since your hits afterwards won’t combo). Follow with standing fierce or mk into sidekick always works, you can use the hurricane kick if they’re standing.
Throw setups, As they get up:
whiff close standing jab right before they get up, then throw, meaty crouching short, throw, whiff crouching strong before they get up, throw.
General throw setups: close standing strong, kara throw (with toward+strong), walk up and throw after a blocked jumping attack, and dashing in works after a couple pokes.
Choose the fireball super (I) if you like ex moves. Low mk into ex fireball is a great staple. Choose shinshoryuken if you like big damage. I don’t recommend denjin until you get real comfortable with the game.
Against chun li, use crouching mk more often, and try to look for patterns and parry. Once she has a bar, turtle a bit and try to bait out patterns. If you parry her crouching mk, never respond with a sweep, as they’ll invariably cancel into super. You can respond with quicker moves and jam her super, however, but it’s better just to block and counter unless you have no life left.
3s progress
I’m starting to get a better feel for 3s. For the moment, I’m using Ken and Chun, as they are the easiest characters to play, from what I’ve seen.
With Chun, I’m trying to stay within back-fierce range, because it seems to be her best normal, aside from c. mk. I start the match with s. fp, because it has decent range and seems to beat out a lot of other openers, but I’m almost certain this won’t hold in higher level play.
Back fierce for medium anti air, and c. hk for far anti air. I still have no answer for close jump-ins. I’m getting better at hit-recognizing the c. mk xx SAII, but I’m nowhere near perfect yet. Sj cancelling the last kick into j. hk adds 3 damage, and leads to wake up game, while cancelling into j. mk adds 3 damage, and leads to crossup as opponent lands on feet.
It looks like Chun can get hit by a close hadoken and acticate SAII, before the opponent has a chance to recover. That’s retarded.
Jabs only used to quickly keep opponent blocking/snuff out moves quickly, while trying to pressure.
I don’t actually know if this is how Chun is supposed to be played, but that’s my basic gameplan for now. I don’t know where to go for 3s information. Oh yeah- I beat Gill today without dying. With an A rating, too! Go me!
I might go to zot at 3:30pm, in case anyone is reading.
I guess no one was.
zz cvs2 sticks = the sux0r
ZZ 3s sticks = the ownage…
but…so is curtis
Yeah, A groove is hella hard on those sticks
Little Skill + ZZ Sticks = Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh
Well at least my K groove kicked your butt a few times, just enough for me to get over the pain of losing to curtis
allen i like your new av
3s progress
Jay: If you’re going to stick to a single character, stick with Chun. I dunno, I’ve seen a lot of kens, and, surprisingly, only a handful of chuns. Anyway, your plan sounds good, but also take advantage of her kara and normal throws. As for close jump ins, hope you’ve been crouching long enough for ex SBK, if not, block high, react low. Alternative: jump, and throw them (she’s one of the few characters in the game with an air throw).
While it might seem like a good idea to abuse c.forward when you have meter, it’ll become more and more predictable, and someone can mess you up for it. Say you hit c.forward just as someone jumps, but you end up standing up instead of trying to go for an EX sbk or something. the person might get a free cross up with ken, a free link with dudley, or a free genei jin with yun, or, if your name is Curtis, a free round. Against parry happy people, you’ll have to learn to react incredibly well by a) throwing, or b) hitting low if they try to parry high, or hitting high if they try and parry low.
dunno what other advice i can give you past that. But, if you want some 3s practice without having to use $3245345345345 to play at ZZ, i sometimes have 3s get together’s at my place.
GGs to all!
yeaahhh!!! ABELS HOUSE IS THE PLACE TO BEEEE!!! cant wait to go back to irvine…sorta
edit:evo matchups
i played tekken tag at this years evo and i did aight. in my bracket i had 3 random guys and then alex v. i was pretty stoked to play because i overheard that alex hadnt been practacing TTT so i thought i had a chance, plus there were 3 random guys that i hadnt heard of, 2 from CA one from VA.
random guy 1: lost…it was dumb too because he turtled pretty hardcore and had a bad offence. He played nina/jin and just would attack then bate a reversal. at the time i was too dumb to realize that i could have just used non-reversable moves to smash him in the face while he was trying to reverse. it was a very close match though, every game went to the last round and even though i should have won, it was (excuse) my first time playing against a human player for about 2 weeks.
random guy 2: really aggressive, the best of the random guys for sure. had good execution but his offence allowed for me to get easy counterhit combos on him for a quick win. He ended up beating me in the tiebreaker to go onto semis (although it didnt matter because i had to leave for germany the next day anyways) he played bryan/jin i think, i remember hworang in there too
random guy 3: too spammy, he ate wayyy too many counterhits because his characters had very few moves with priority, so as a result he didnt get a round on me and didnt have any wins at the end. he played hwo/baek
alex v.: mishmas!!! jin/heihachi. He was a good careful mishma player, constantly keeping me guessing on when he was going to unleash another ewgf (really fast high priority uppercut that launches…hella gay). I managed to get off a couple good juggles on him and i made the rounds pretty close sometimes, but he ended up beating me, as well as everyone else for a 4-0 score in the bracket.
that makes a 3 way tie between me, randomguy 1, and random guy 2. random guy 2 ended up taking it. what sucks is that if i beat the first guy then i would have gone straight to the semis, no questions asked with a 3-1 record only losing to valle. whatevs tho, it was fun
thanks to john for dealing with all my bullshit, hahahahah!!!
well…
since everyone is putting up their evo log…
my round robin match:
psychobetabuckdown
magus1234
mopreme
random dude(didn’t show up)
so this left me with only 3 matches to play.
my first match(psychobetabuckdown):
-i put ratio2 rock up first, i forgot who he played, but i lost rock to his ratio1. my maki comes back pretty decent but he still has a lead. it comes down to his R2 K-rolento full life versus my blankaR1 with approx 80-90% life. he gets a good start, crippling me to a pixel of life, while i FINALLY get a knockdown on him, i attempt the cross up super. it lands and he’s down to like 10% life. i somehow knockhim down into the corner leaving him with pixels of life. he’s raged, and i’m right next to him with no life as well. i think about my options. i can either jump backwards and avoid the wakeup super, but then i’d have to deal with his j.strong, which could really fuck me up, so i decided to take my chance and jump straight up and try to JD the mind sweep super. i’m so retarded. i miss the JD and he wins. Thanks evo for the best of 1 match
-my second match (magus1234):
now i’m a little nervous, and rock doens’t do hot early, but when i was raged, ticked a c.jab into 360, but the 360 didn’t break so i couldn’t do shine knuckle(which would have killed his first character leaving rock with about 20% life left). he kills off my ratio2 rock. great stuff:lame: . with maki, i came back pretty well, once i was raged, i hopped off the wall, did j.rh(low to ground), did cmd run/stop, into nothing. he was blocking low the WHOLE time. one of my favorite 720 setups refused to come out. i missed 2 supers already that would have made a big difference in the match. anyways. apparently magus1234 plays against a lot of blanka, so he parries a lot of my attacks since my blanka sux0r. i lose to magus leaving him with half life still. had a good chance at beating him too, thanks evo again, for those best of 1 matches.
-my third match (mopreme):
by this point, both magus1234 and psychobetabuckdown had already qualiified, leaving me and mopreme to duel it out for the “who’s not the shittiest” title. i frankly did give a fuck anymore cuz i was out of the draw already. here were the highlights for my match against mopreme
-once i got raged, my tick into 360, shine knuckle. got a big “oOoo” from the crowd"
-on his second character(i think it was A-sak) i baited out his CC activation and just run away until his FULl bar ran out, just cuz i dont’ wnat him anywhere near even half bar. once i got raged, he was knocked down in the corner, i did a REALLY obvious run/shift attempt(but he’s never seen it before) 360, laser, c.jab xx raging storm. big “ooOOoo” from the crowd again. GGPO. later dentron told me that some people near him were like “whoa what the hell is that.”
-he beats my rock and gets to maki, it was just harassment from there. i had way too much life against his last character, once he had full bar, and activated CC next to me, i did my anti CC move(the spin kicky ) then i just killed him off using mainly her spin kick move.
thanks again evo, for making cvs2 best of 1…
in casuals:
-beat UCrollerblader in a ratio4 K-rock vs ratio4 K-rock match. i won $5
-played Dr. B. He owned me with his crazy randomness
-played viscant. i beat him fairly easy. only played him once, so maybe it was a fluke
-played buktooth, i beat his iori with half life left on rock. then his morrigan kills off my whole team.
-against jhamal(ian’s P groove friend from up north). ocv’ed by his P-kyo
-played laugh. really solid player that i never really hear of. he supposedly is the one that made the “how to RC electricity” video. i didn’t beat him once. A-sak/bison/blanka is too powerful for me
-played popoblo. wow, kentucky has good players(maybe just A player). he really solid and i never would have thought it.
-played kindebu. he ocv’s me with K-kyo. but he was also trying to understand the person next to him who’s asking a bunch of questions while we played. so i just didn’t try very hard and apparently kindebu doesnt need to pay attention to do mixups with kyo :/.
conclusions/what i learned
-K groove dies hard to A-groove. i thinking about learning N-groove, since i can’'t JD a shoshosho CC anyways. also i’ve been screwed a lot when i try to JD and try to sweep when the person is stiill safe. bad habit.
-there aren’t a lot of N groovers, but N groove is just like K, but it can survive against A
-i’m sticking in N-blanka as my anchor, cuz he’s dependable plus RC electricity is the cheapest thing in the world
-i’m sticking in N-sagat in the middle cuz his combo’s look cool. plus his lvl 1 supers are powerful . countermovement with sagat > random supers
-at first i wanted to drop maki, and use N-iori(cuz buktooth has sick mixups with N-iori). however after some games in with strider hiryu, i decided that i have to learn N-iori in depth more and it’ll be much wiser just to stick with N-maki, since my K-maki was based off iyo’s N-maki >_<.
-i’m also changing the way i hold the stick, so i can do super motion faster, but since i’m not used to it, my reaction is a bit off. but once i get it down, i’ll be able to do harder super links more consistant.
Evo was a great experience.
Did anyone use Geese? If not, then it seems that Geese is not “tournament worthy” :bluu: …not that it would make a difference on my behalf since I’m probably so rusty…
On a different note, has anyone played or gotten Doom 3? I tried it at Best Buy and it is fun and challenging even on the easiest setting. It takes 3 pistol shots to the head/chest to kill a basic zombie and those with guns can learn to duck and avoid your gunfire; or is it that I’m just really bad at first-person shooting games?
i saw a few A/K-geese not too many though.
eugene has doom3
I hope he didn’t buy it.
