Tucson's Bookmans tournaments

Would probably have to set it up right in between the people who are playing so that nobody gets in the way. I remember how crowded it was for the first bookman’s tourney i went to. But that sounds like it would work.

Wow, this thread blew up into a semi-decent discussion about SF, Tucson, God, bitches and money, chicken and biscuits. I likes it.

My 0.02:

While the sort of elitist attitudes some have ranted about here actually exist in any sort of specialized subcult (be it video games, skateboarding, ricers, fake breast appreciation, etc), the simple antidote is to NOT be a giant faggot and stop acting like what you know makes you special.

Yes, the idea of getting together and playing these games SHOULD be raising the overall level of play, making everyone in a given scene better…and it would happen like that if not for our precious bloody egos. A perfect example of this is the following:

A few Third Strike tournaments ago, I played Josh’s Chun-Li. Now, I will admit to being a rusty MF at 3S, it has never been an absolute mainstay for me in the way ST or Alpha 2 was, but I knew what he was doing. Pretty much your garden variety mid-distance hovering, tons of standing fierce, semi-aggressive turtling looking to set up the low-forward-SAII-into super jump fierce juggle combo. Been seen a million times. I should have been able to see it all coming and act accordingly, but given my rust, I got beat by it. Instead of recognizing this, I gave him shit for it, calling it “the most boring shit I have ever seen.” Now, that wasn’t entirely fair of me to say. It’s in the game, it just needs to be acknowledged and accounted for. A better player will adjust to such tactics, and on that day I was not the better player.

So this whole ego thing definitely comes into play whether we like it or not. But it’s long past time to let that whole “Guardian of The Secret” mentality die like the little bitch it is and start sharing the knowledge. There was a time when things were very different…pre-internet, when SFII first starting wrecking arcades, my buddies and I would play all over Tucson and everyone would just discuss everything they knew and we all got better as a result. Shit, I’ve been an SF-head so long I can remember playing against this crazy younger kid with long hair and one hand who wasn’t that good but really loved to play. He eventually learned to destroy us all and became known as the One-Handed Terror. lol

But yes, it seems as if the rise of the web and the whole ego thing went hand in hand and made the whole scene around 2D fighters much more assholish than it ever needed to be.

I never really had a ego trying to get people to gether just… theres no point in getting people to gether if they dont want to learn, or dont have the time.

Its like Sean said you can try to teach people but they just get mad

“chicken and biscuits”

Mmmmmm, we talkin’ bout those KFC honey biscuits son?

If I want a ego trip ill just tak shit about gaiaonline.com fucking retards there making a MMORPG

this whole ego trip thing is …nonsense…no one is having an ego trip yall are just delusional BAHAHAHAHA…j/k…but fo real, when someone says something like i did, it is criticism/observation…

and like some people implied, when you try to teach people some things you get labled as having a big ego too…but whatever i dont really care nor should anyone care if you have a “big ego”…some people have humble attitudes some dont…

i mean when my tennis coach told me that i dont understand how to play the % game in tennis i wasnt like like OMFG awerfoaiejf sdfa this dude is such an elitist asshole, his ego is sooo BIG…i mean come on now…

thing about teaching scrubs is pointless, they dont want to learn. Yet they think they’ll become the next top player. There still trying to learn things that has already been learned years ago

I always thought the original definition of scrub was someone who was very one-dimensional in his game, knew some obviously potent shit that was easily learned but beyond that didn’t know much about the fundamentals of a game.

I think it has just come to mean “someone doing shit I don’t like in a fighting game”. As in, whenever someone is annoying you…scrub. More of a generic insult now than anything else.

Just one of those things that gets tossed around too much.
I blame TLC.

tough learning curve???

btw…i gotta give you props for throwing these tournaments…that is very cool…and they are on a consistant basis which is even cooler…respect for that…

Lol hes talking about the music group TLC. I loved Lisa left eye, even though she was a phyco-path

Ya’ll are wrong. He’s clearly referring to The Learning Channel and the fact that their motto is “Oh you didn’t know? GTFO SCRUB!”

Someone teach me to play CvS2

I never bothered to get any good at CVS2, but it looked like an excellent game, and I’m left wondering why it isn’t more tournament-worthy (than it is already, mind you). I heard Yun was able to break the game, but, I’ve never seen it happen.

Personally, I loved CVS2 because of the groove system taking ‘technical’ to a whole new level, and for making Dan suck less. Dan + CVS2 Dodge = Win.

If you really want to learn, I have just one suggestion…

http://www.youtube.com/

Weren’t there some things about it that some people didn’t like like roll-cancelling and K-groove. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I still think it’s a fun game but I hate some of the stuff they did to Yamazaki.

lseelba check PM yo!

Shit came up and I’m not gonna be able to attend this weekend, so I’d really like to see at least the finals recorded, so I don’t totally miss out. I might show up for ST, though, even though I’ve never played the game.

Somebody play Akuma for me!

wtf are you talking about Akuma is banned from all tournaments in ST. If you pick him I will break your neck and then stab you then shit on your chest. Theres no reason to play Akuma in ST unless you just want to get banned

And yes CVS2 is about RC and k-groove

Hawk you have said some of the scrubbiest things ever in this thread. I need to make a compilation post

(not trying to be an ass but you have said some crazy stuff about both 3S, CvS2, and now ST)

Hawk is not really a scrub Ive played him, hes a noob he just doesnt know lol

LOL, this thread.

lseelba, PM

"I think that you are kinda being a Presumptuous if you assume that no one in Tucson understands SF.

Really, this kind of elitist mindset is borderline pompous assholism."
